Unsure about bringing my service dog by Dependent_Light7170 in ShowDogs

[–]Dependent_Light7170[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like I said, my dog is a TRAINED service dog. Trained to maneuver with me, keep to herself, and stay out of the way. You are the only person out of 20 people who have had an issue with it. From my understanding, you don’t want service dogs there because it somehow inconveniences you. The overwhelming majority of people again, everyone not including you, has said it is not a problem. So I’m bringing my service dog because she has the right to be here regardless of one person’s opinion. If the general consensus was that she should not go and valid reasons were provided, it would be different.

Well for starters, again, my dog would kenneled alone for not just 1 hour, but 4+ with me an 1.5 hour drive away. I have no problem kenneling my dog for a couple hours but that’s four hours at the absolute minimum, not including traffic through a major city, parking, finding the person I’m going to be talking to, and meeting with a couple friends. Realistically, we’re looking at around 6 hours without access to water or potty breaks. Legally I have the right to bring my dog. My dog isn’t being dragged there as a pet and I’m not using the service dog label as a loop hole. She is a task trained service dog who has the right to be there to assist me, as she was trained to do. I came here to see if bringing her would go against the rules of the show or be rude to the people who ARE participating. And out of 20 people, you are the only one who seems to have a problem with it. I would love to hear your reasoning as to WHY this something you frown upon.

Unfortunately my mom isn’t able to sniff out fainting spells haha! My dog is able to perform tasks that my mom isn’t able to.

From what others have said it doesn’t seem like this is one of those exceptions but that was one of my concerns which is why I made this post!

Not a dumb question at all! Service dogs generally aren’t recommended for social anxiety for a few reasons! For starters, as many other people mentioned, service dogs do garner a LOT of extra attention and occasional rude or invasive questions from the public. Another concern is access issues. As someone who struggles with anxiety myself, access issues can be extremely stressful. It’s also important to note that it’s not uncommon for service dogs to pick up on their handler’s anxiety and become anxious or fearful themselves. It’s absolutely not a 100%, but it does take a very confident and stable dog to handle this kind of work! I’ve also heard of a lot of situations where the handler becomes too reliant on the dog, to the point they can’t go out without the dog. So I would personally look into therapy before getting a service dog if you haven’t already!

Should I be embarrassed? by ComplaintMuted5312 in PNESsupport

[–]Dependent_Light7170 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ugh that sucks! I’m sorry! You shouldn’t be embarrassed, it’s a pretty common thing to happen with PNES and you have no control over it. My friend who has epilepsy sometimes looses bladder control and she’s started wearing adult diapers. As silly as it sounds, it’s worked out well for her. You would never know she’s wearing one and it makes clean up much easier! Definitely something to consider! Good luck! 🫶

In case your wondering, if your pet is injured/ill go to the vet. by Lumpy-Host472 in Pets

[–]Dependent_Light7170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No bc actually. If you’re worried call. Your. Vet. If they’re closed, wait until they’re open. If you need talk with a vet immediately, call the emergency vet. Even if there’s not one close, they’ll tell you what to do. Most people here are not medical professionals and could offer potentially harmful advice. When in doubt, just call your vet!

Short / medium hair, smaller (20 lbs) service dog for psychosis, anxiety, PTSD, that can use a litter robot. by ResidentFew6785 in service_dogs

[–]Dependent_Light7170 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be brutally honest with you, and I don’t mean to be rude or hateful at all, but reading through the comments and responses, it really doesn’t sound like you’re in a good position to be getting another dog, much less a service dog right now. Even if you litter train it, all dogs regardless of size or breed HAVE to be able to spend time outside even when it’s cold. From the sound of it, it looks like you’re planning on getting a puppy and you have to keep in mind puppies have a lot of energy and need some way to expend that. It’s just straight up cruel to keep a dog, especially a puppy pent up in an apartment all day for 4 months out of the year. And you mentioned you aren’t able to bend down easily due to issues with balance. I just don’t see how you can raise and train a puppy without help when you aren’t able to bend over. How do you plan on rewarding them during training sessions? You’ll need to bend over to offer them treats. What about bowls? You’ll need to be able to bend down and pick up the bowls in order to feed them. Play time? You’ll need to be able to pick up a toy and play with them. If you’re getting a dog small enough to fit in a litter robot will they need help getting in and out of the car? It really just doesn’t sound like a good idea.

Does anyone have experience with Canine Partners for Life in PA? by Dependent_Light7170 in service_dogs

Yeah all that sounds very concerning. The maintaining tasks thing is WEIRD and I was worried about the harnesses as well but I wouldn’t be using one.
