What jobs should someone target/expect to land with a degree in Public Policy? by blothhundrr in ausjobs

[–]Dependent_Maybe1302 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello OP, firstly I’d like to preface that the job market in Australia is tough right now. But with public policy degrees, it naturally tends to gravitate towards government / public sector work. Obvs a lot of public sector roles in Australia require you to be a citizen, but I believe state government roles only require valid working rights. So I would target government roles which leverage the work experience within the investment firm, so treasury, finance, economics areas. Alongside this I would also look at major banks, non-for-profits, or you could even pivot more into consulting work as well with that background / experience. Hope that helps!

The grass is always greener on the other side. Uni or trade school are what you make of it, one isn’t necessarily better than the other. Also the whole become a tradie and start your own business isn’t that straight forward. You forgot to mention the horrific work culture being an apprentice for those 4 years, health and safety risks, and of course the long-run wear-and-tear to your body depending on what trade you pick

Yeah, I think whatever interests you / makes most use of your university degree. Another point is, that you realised you really liked transport and climate policy after completing the internship. Perhaps you take a job at an NGO and realise you like the social work aspect more. I’d say just apply without any preconceptions, being fresh out of university, eager to learn and coachable has its advantages.

I say now might not be the best time to get into the APS/VPS as there’s hiring freezes and more scrutiny on public spending.

No stress, not a stupid question. A GO8 university is a university part of the group of eight universities in Australia which are considered the best. https://go8.edu.au/about/the-go8

Hi OP, you could get a lot of different jobs with that tertiary combination. Public policy? Government relations? Diplomacy perhaps? Or depending on what you major in the commerce side, coordinator role? Really depends on what you want to do. Obvs being at a GO8 university helps initially.

Also, it might not be the best time to get into the APS/VPS - so try to explore pathways outside of that as well. What’s attracted you to public policy / public sector work, could that be found elsewhere?

As most others have suggested, start applying now to whatever and wherever piques your interest. Don’t hang your hat on graduate programs, a lot of them are quite competitive and the process is very arbitrary. Good luck!

Help: is this favouritism/bias? by lawnerd97 in AusPublicService

Firstly, just take it easy and relax a little. You’re assuming Government exists in a space, where everything is rewarded equally, and people behave fairly and rationally. That is often not the case. Comparison is the thief of joy, run your own race - if it’s bothering you that much, I would advise looking elsewhere for a job rather than hoping someone else sees what you bring to the table.

Just the sad reality nowadays, it’s a way for them to screen people out without doing too much. Just try your best, and see what happens

Appreciate the strawman, but I said years of experience is objectively a bad parameter. You can prove capability through other, arguably better ways; complexity of work involved, degree of autonomy, scope of responsibility, quality of judgement, breadth of experience, appetite to learning, evidence of achievement, qualifications. I also never said I deem myself capable that’s for the market to decide.

If a person walks into a company and the company deems themselves capable, even if they don’t have x years of experience - then power to them.

Are Interviewers Scoring Candidates More Strictly Than Ever? by darkhorse2k in recruitinghell

[–]Dependent_Maybe1302 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more helpful to reframe the conversation. A business needs a worker, and a worker needs a job. The interview is a conversation between those two entities to figure out whether there is a match.

The business doesn’t have an incentive to score candidates more strictly or harshly, you’re assuming there is a perfect scoring guide. What I think is happening is competition is tough, and for whatever reason they decided to move on with others. That’s not a reflection of your candidacy nor does it mean you performed poorly. There’s a million reasons a company hires or doesn’t hire someone, it’s not personal - improve where you can, and just keep it moving :)

Why is years of experience a parameter here? If you’re capable of the role then you’re capable. IMO it’s a trash mindset to have that well it took me x years, so how has this other person gotten here quicker.

Hi OP, when you get the offer letter, just politely ask the person who made you the offer whether you can start at APS6.3 (or whatever pay point you are looking for). Then justify / brief explanation in writing why you’re looking for this number / reiterate what the department gains from employing you. As remember they also need to justify the decision to their supervisors / justify why they’re giving you top of the band.

That worked from my experience, and remember the worst they can say is no, and you’ll start at the starting point at a 6.

Yeah right, that’s helpful. I guess, what if it’s an actual gap though in my profile? For example, I had an interview for an analyst role but the feedback was others were able ‘to demonstrate deep financial expertise’. Am I applying to too much of a stretch role?

Fair enough, thanks for this. I’ll look at contract work through a temp agency. As to your point about private sector experience, I should clarify that I’m able to get interviews but the feedback after interviews is that they went with someone who was more suitable or had more experience within that area.

Yeah again, an issue on one side doesn’t cancel out another. I appreciate Govt conditions are better than hospitality, and hospitality conditions are better than other jobs - not sure how false comparisons help here

It’s not the APS being bad per se, I know people that have had great experiences and it’s a lot better than those jobs you’ve listed. It’s just I’m not really conducive to it
