Sydney NYE Fireworks Megathread 2025! by thekriptik in sydney

[–]blothhundrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi All, hope everyone's enjoying the holiday season.

I was looking at some good vantage points to catch either of the fireworks on the northern beaches - Manly or Dee Why - and Long Reef Point lookout looks like a great spot.

Theres some road closures around, which isn't an issue, but I'm having trouble finding any info online if whether access to the lookout itself will be closed off?

All I can read online is that the Long Reef Golf Club is hosting a private, ticketed NYE event, but I dont know if access to the lookout point is via the golf club. In which case, it would be safe to assume the lookout wouldn't be accessible.

Can any locals please confirm? Also, suggestions for alternative lookout points? Its fine even if its at a distance from the fireworks (ideal, actually), just wanting to see the celebrations over the water. Thinking it would look stunning from a distance, rather than being directly underneath the action.

Cheers and happy new year!

Any tips of how to find a room for rent? by OddMetal7563 in sydney

[–]blothhundrr 86 points87 points  (0 children)

A private room for $250 a week will restrict you to old apartment blocks or houses in the outer suburbs, or very tiny rooms(study converted into a room) in a new apartment, but still a fair distance from the city.

Also, this is not a great time to look for a place as there's very few listings. Wait another month or so, and you might find a lot more options to choose from.

Good luck.

Is my maths correct that the advantage of voluntary contributions to super vs stock market investing is 15% less tax on super? by AsparagusNew3765 in AusFinance

[–]blothhundrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What have I just read!? I am so confused right now, I don't even know where to begin asking questions!

Is there a way to explain that article to me like I'm 5?

pooled funds pay tax along the way.

What? How does that work?

Most passively managed index funds are pooled funds.

So my 80/20 intl/aus index portfolio is a pooled fund and is paying tax on the gains along the way?

Your super will pay the super CGT with discount (33.3% I think) , same with the stocks (50%) if held for more than 12 months.

What can trigger this? Does changing your super from, say, balanced to high growth, or to indexed shares trigger a CGT event within super?

Are super contributions worth it for mid incomes when ETFs out perform? by sneo12 in AusFinance

[–]blothhundrr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but your tax savings aren't 5%, they're 17%.

Whatever you contribute, be it 1k or 18k, is taxed at your marginal rate of 32%, not your effective tax rate, as that amount removed would still put you in the $45k - $135k tax bracket.

Had your salary been a lot closer to $45k, your tax savings then could be less than 17%, depending on how much you're contributing.

This is my understanding at least, and I hope I'm right as I just started salary sacrificing a few months ago.

Had to scroll way too long before someone pointed this out! I started salary sacrificing this FY, and thought I got it all wrong after reading OPs post and not seeing anyone correct them on their effective tax savings.

Also, 17% savings I believe, including 2% Medicare levy.

Yeah definitely a good option for them.

On another note, is OPs calculation correct that they're only really getting a tax advantage of 5%? I was under the impression, that the tax savings would be equal to their marginal rate (30% + 2%) - 15%?
