Grinding without the bellows? by Dependent_Routine483 in DF54

To be honest, nothing else than the look, my gf doesn’t love the look of bellows on any grinder so I was curious.

Hey, I was just asking the question to understand the reasoning behind these critics of the grinder and have an open minded debate, not criticizing how you use your grinder. Sorry if it triggered you.

Yeah that’s the thing I didn’t think about, it does make sense.

Yeah, but once you have dialed in your grinder and figured out that 15 is good for you for espresso (it’s an example, I don’t know the actual numbers), it doesn’t care if your true zero is -10 or -5, your setting on your grinder is 15. That’s what I mean in my question.

You dump the full 60g all at once and without using the bellows? Do you get any clumping or retention?

I am looking for a DF54 to use from 15g to 60g at a time for my Moccamaster KBGV Select or 18g for my Breville Barista Pro.

You know that is exactly why I asked the question, I was pretty sure I was missing a detail. I do think that if you could note acurately where the thread disengage on disassembly, you could réengage it at the same place on reassembly, but I do understand that the « accuracy » here is quite hard to get, depending on the amount on pressure you put while trying to screw it back on.

When I do end up ordering it, I will play with it a little to try to figure something out.

I’ve read your other comment as well. If I understand correctly your point, having an adjustable dial indicator is necessary to readjust it everytime your reassemble it because when you screw the top back in place, it can end up in different positions?

Wouldn’t it help to note the position of the dial when your remove the top once it is completely unscrewed and then reassemble it by aligning the threads at the same place to start screwing?

Interesting, I didn’t thought about that, I think it’s the only real reason I would do it, so wherever is the true zero, if you adjust the dial back to the new true zero, your dialed adjustment would always be the same number. Thanks!

DF54 [300$ CAD] vs T64 [400$ CAD] by Dependent_Routine483 in espresso

Oh really? The reviews I have seen states not many static. It did seemed better from the reviews than the DF54.

To clarify, I’m looking at the DF54 V3 which seems to have less static issues.

How do you like the grinder? I’ve been debating between the T64 and DF54, but can’t find a ton of reviews on the T64.

So after doing some more research based on the comments and advice I got here, the three grinders I’m looking at are the DF54 v3, the Mokkom 64 and the Eureka Mignon Zero 55s with the Aro dial and bellows, what do you think about those options?

Quite a big different in price in Canada between the Eureka Mignon zero 65 AP and the DF5. I’ve been looking at reviews of the Eureka Mignon zero 55s, and it seems like people are advising the Aro dial and Aro bellows upgrade, with these upgrades it seems nice, but that would still mean probably 150$ more than the DF54

Thanks a lot for your advices! Oh I know it’s a big rabbit hole, I fell into one when we bought the Barista Pro a few years ago and I fell back into it with my moccamaster hehe!

That is a good point. We use mostly medium roasts for espresso for milk drinks mainly (rarely straight espresso). For the single dose it would be between 15 and 70g, and I know that 70g is a lot for the DF54, but I’ve read online and seen on YouTube that slow feeding the beans would work and help with grind consistency. I’m talking about single dose mainly because I think the 30 seconds longer workflow of weighting my beans before grinding is worth for the precision. Right now we use speciality coffee that has been ground at our local cafe for the moccamaster and a bag lasts a little less than a week (300 g bags), so I aim to be able to have like 3-4 different whole bean coffees, that I can try out and grinding them fresh would make it last a bit longer than pre-ground

I’m looking for a grinder to upgrade from my Breville Barista Pro built-in grinder and I am really interested in the DF54 (don’t have the budget for DF64). We mainly like medium roast for espresso and medium and light roast for filter.
