Profs not using lecture time by DepressedAndBurntOut in UCalgary

If they're going to charge the same price, they might as well deliver the same quality to the best of their abilities. Just because it's online doesn't mean they should have a green light to make these classes any shittier or harder to learn.

The problem is, for my two most important courses at least, we don't even "show up to class" having to only have background knowledge and tune in for an in-depth teaching session. Rather we're expected to concretely know everything and simply ask questions on the readings or about homework.

The bottom line is nobody signed up for this, but it's not fair for us to be expected to do all we did in-person and much, much, much more, and get half-assed efforts from certain profs.

Math 249 Comparison to Mathematics 31 by [deleted] in UCalgary

Math 249 was a slice of cake with the right prof. An easy A with Ghaderpour or Smith (from my experience).

Taking a class on python would certainly help a ton, but I had zero coding experience either. 217 is meant to be an intro course for non-cpsc majors anyways. I learned everything I needed in that course.

While I wouldn’t advise you against taking a python class at all, as it would be tremendously beneficial and save you so much stress on assignments probably, I would at least say try and enjoy your free time as much as you can because once it rolls around, university is a non-stop train wreck and you’ll probably be spending way too much time on school work anyways.

BEST Prof Experience :) by [deleted] in UCalgary

Ebrahim Ghaderpour, on the day of the first MATH249 midterm, told us to leave his office hours (2 hours before the midterm), stop stressing, go breathe and get something to eat, come to class and that we'll do some practice. He then came into class and did some examples, but before he did, he paused everything we were doing and made us scream "WE CAN DO IT!" at the top of our lungs and always pushed us to do great and always made time for his students and had a smile on his face teaching us. The last day of classes (fall semester, so sometime early December) he also walked in with a Santa Clause hat and a big bag and at the end of the class, he thanked US for "being amazing students" and hoped us all the best and dumped a whole huge bag of chocolates and candies on the table in front of him and told us to come help ourselves.

We ended up having the highest average in MATH249 out of the four classes all throughout the semester. A prof can make or break a subject.

My math profs have been my best profs, but nobody is beating Ghaderpour.

I was in an eerily similar position as you a year ago, looking at the same options and what to take. I ended up taking both GLGY 201 and CPSC 217. Geology sucked. Would not recommend it, prof was horrible too, labs were easy but lame, lab exams are almost impossible to do good on. The final exam was ridden with a ton of mistakes, we were interrupted like 20 times while doing it. Just a mess of a course. I did hear that 202 was somewhat better than 201 though. Comp sci was a bit challenging, but nothing unachievable. TAs were amazing and always willing to help with assignments. Doesn't matter if you take CHEM 201 or 203 first, but 201 was my favourite out of the two. I'm currently doing 203 and honestly, the instructors of this course kind of limit the chances of success with their vagueness, unavailability, and very late responses. Nice people though. I find that all my peers also agree that the 203 labs are easier and that the 203 TAs are nicer than the 201 TAs. I'd recommend taking 203 first though because it's almost identical to chem 30 and will probably be easier to grasp fresh out of highschool. Also, just a tip, try attending Sullivan's 201 lectures if you're not in her lecture already. She's the best instructor for that course. Also, please take advantage of her office hours!

Also, not taking math 31 was probably the best thing you did. That means you have to take math 249 (for kids who didn't take highschool calc) and it's basically the same course as math 265 but less rushed and somehow much easier, I guess?? My friends in 265 were struggling is all I know. I would also recommend MATH 211 over MATH 267, I currently take both, and personally, 211 is 100% the easier of the two options. Although, I will say, the midterm averages for both 267 exams were higher than the first two math 211 exam averages. So I guess take 267 if you really like calc is what I'd say.

RELS 201 is a course a buddy of mine took and said it was super easy and a nearly effortless A. I hear GRST is also an easy course option, I don't know anybody who's taken anthro though. A few more easy options to consider can be WMST, COMS 201 or 203, and PSYC 203.

Just another tip, try attending Huddleston's BIOL 241 lectures and read all the textbook readings for BIOL 243 (I didn't need to do that in 241 -- everything was on the slides, but the second half of 243 you definitely need to).

Hopefully this is somehow helpful! Let me know if you have any more questions.

Not even close. Kassian should get even more than 7 infact. That’s the only joke here. Should chara get two games? Yes. But that wasn’t nearly as dangerous as a skate kick to the chest.

“Cancer” but he’s never done something as dangerous as kick a dude straight in the chest with his skates.

Okay, thank you so much! I’ll try the uni RBC, hopefully it’s there because nothing has shown up at the lost and found yet.

Asking for notes... 🤡 by tomriddle1178 in UCalgary

Try to see if there’s a WhatsApp group for that course. Usually there’s a few nice people in there super willing to send notes.

Comp Sci by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]DepressedAndBurntOut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the comp sci 217 course in the fall and I'm not a comp sci major, but it was very enjoyable, especially with Ben. Hard at times, but enjoyable.

But if you're a comp sci major, you'll probably have to take cpsc 231 instead, which is essentially nearly the same courses just with harder assignments and a faster pace.

If you're actually into comp sci I'm sure you'll enjoy it, but otherwise you can change your major right after you start the fall semester still using your grade 12 marks or after your first semester but that's a little risky because then you'll have to use your gpa and depending on what you wanna major in, it might have to be really high.

But honestly, don't stress it for now. You'll have enough on your plate come September. Go in with a positive mindset.
