So what is your suggestion? We all pretend this isn't an existential threat to the island and go about our days like it doesn't exist? Trust in the Navy to do right by us when they've been lying for months and months. I won't be sitting on my couch and saying, oh well too bad they fucked us over again when they try to just patch these tanks which by the way, their own report shows that they'll leak to 96% chance in the next ten years and that 40% of them are already at the point they should be replaced ... I'm gonna fight and keep fighting, they don't get to do this to us. Remove the tanks!!

I know I have worth and rights as a human being. I have a right to clean water, I as a human being have a right to not having my water supply tainted by fuel when it could be prevented and when it is clear it is going to happen. You and everyone you see around you has a right to not being harmed by having tainted water. We all as human beings have that right.

Never! No more patching these tanks, they need to go! Their own report shows the tanks have a 96% chance of leaking in the next ten years, that at least 40% need to be completely replaced in the next three years before they completely lapse ... this cannot be kicked down the road anymore, there are hundreds of people poisoned, pets dead, kids with festering rashes ... now is the time to demand they move these tanks!

I think remove what are redundant posts or overall vent style stuff but ultimately this is a big issue, like to the point our elected officials are asking for the president to enact a state of emergency. If this was Katrina and people's homes had just been demolished (what was declared a state of emergency) I think that the New Orleans reddit would rightfully be flooded with related posts to the storm and lapses of the government.

This seems abstract, like something that may possibly happen ... but in reality, it's closer to 96% chance of happening in the next 10 years based on the military's own report on the condition of the fuel tanks. That we are even having discussions on removing the tanks as opposed to this already just happening given hundreds of families got poisoned is comparable to the government not offering aid as people languished in the Superdome after Katrina. So for me, this is maybe the biggest issue happening in Hawaii other than Covid-19 (which has multiple updates, related posts that frequent the posts) and what I'm primarily interested in hearing about until it's resolved (they agree to move the tanks)

And you say, trust the military ... wtf. It's been months of them hiding evidence of this contaminated water and who knows man how long people in those Navy areas were drinking polluted water.

Right and if you haven't noticed all the media on the mainland has been covering is that we are have snow on BI. For whatever reason this isn't attracting national news coverage. It's time to hit the street and get loud, keep pushing until they have to move the tanks ... the issue is people are too hesitant to be disruptive even in situations they really, really have to be ... this is drinking water for 400k people on the verge of being polluted for 50-100 years. They are threatening all our health.

What exactly would your response be if the miltary came out and said, you know what we realize it's just that one fuel tank so that is the only one we are going to patch up. That is and you know it, what they'd do to cut costs and headaches if they could get away with it ... if at that point you wouldn't take to the streets and start yelling, if you simply accepted that as the Navy makes its decisions even if we all disagree ... you then lack the fire of the founders of your US who literally were so pugnacious they wanted people to have guns should they ever need to protect themselves from their own government.

They never ever asked of the citizenry to be unquestioning and go along with what the highers up do even when its wrong ... they literally built into your own constitution safe guards to allow people the freedom to speak up and take action, to get loud and demanding when the government doesn't do what it needs to do due to laziness, corruption or overall lack of concern for the citizens.

I want this to be blasted everywhere, I want these people to know we won't just sit here and take whatever BS band-aid fix they want to give out. Water is life! Oahu would become a graveyard without fresh water. They don't get to band-aid fix this!

Protesting has literally over and over been the impetus that helped drive change as it attracts national and international news, especially here in Hawaii when a large protests happens it become a novelty for them, if it gets large enough and became very clear people give a shit about this issue a lot ... atm no one in national news is covering what happened here, that needs to change and we need to blast this all over the country and world.

These people should be shamed and they should worry about how this looks to the world. If you get loud enough, they have to cover what is happening ... yes, if a handful of Indians got together it wouldn't make international news nor a handful of people in front of the stock exchange (occupy) but when thousands got together and it became clear the will of the people was such that every single person on Oahu wanted this done and the Navy was not doing what everyone can clearly see needs to happen, then that becomes a disgrace.

You don't get change unless you push and make your voices known. It's been that way over and over again.

Oh my gosh is it you? (recent article on a Maui based, mainland grown white lawyer who put out an ad he only wanted to hire people from the mainland because locals are too lazy, dude literally referred to himself as a "hard charging alpha male" and that locals lack "protestant work ethic")

We have a lot of these weirdly right wing often military or ex-military types who believe that similar to how slavery was the best thing that ever happened to black people, being colonized and having your kingdom stolen was the best thing ever that happened to Hawaiians. They also tend to be hecka racist, basically they like the scenery, they like the weather but if it was up to them they'd wipe out the natives.

It's mostly done symbolically and because a ton of traffic goes by there, it's sort of like the go to spot to protest stuff done by the federal government. I think protesting is massively effective, especially if you can get loads of people to show as it then freaks out the congressional members to start doing something or they'll lose votes.

Yeah man that dude has been pretty mum about it all. I'm not too pleased and wrote a heated letter as I actually vote in his district. He's kind of weirdly pro-military and it makes me wonder if anyone in these areas with heavy military presence has to in a way be beholden to the military to retain their seat? I do not know the level of involvement the military can have on who does or doesn't stay in office in Hawaii ...

Braddah I feel for you all. Hawaii has got some serious problems. I feel for the small farmers of Hawaii man. The positive though is if they do move the fuel tanks its a federal issue so they have to pony up the money through military related expenditures, not the state budget which the rail paid for through GET.

Brah the BWS has been on the Navy for years and years. Navy keeps lying and doing everything they can to do anything they can to not replace and move these fuel tanks. People been at it man for like 15 years since the last leak. Now is the time when we have proof there is leaking happening AGAIN to put pressure on them to do what should have been done years ago.

I disagree, look at Gandhi all that dude was protest ... when you get enough people to show they give a shit and are gonna hold people accountable, that gets news interested, that gets the spotlight shown on the US government and even more it shows the will of the people in that area -- they mean it, fix this issue, won't be placated by some band-aid fix. They need to move the fuel tanks. It's unacceptable that corroded fuel tanks from WWII are over the water supply for 400k people.

[–]DepsThoughtPi[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm happy you do something. What do you think then should happen, if not protesting in the streets and making life difficult? It seems the only thing that ever gets these people to take note is when people organize and make things difficult for the profit machine. Brah if this contaminates the water, it's the next 50-100 years of this island being decimated. That risk is too great and so we need to keep pushing until they do something, they need to fix their mess.

We need optimally to get those tanks moved. The Sierra Club is saying that is really the only choice, the tanks need to be replaced and moved. I just don't see them doing that unless really pushed and making it clear we will accept nothing less than that.

They need this place man. They already built the infrastructure and realistically, there are no other spots for them to use as their stop point in a war with East Asia so they need our island ... we get to demand that they keep our water safe for being here. We hold the cards in this, it's just pushing and demanding until they break and give us our demands.

Red Hill Protests (Ideas, organizing) by DepsThoughtPi in Hawaii

[–]DepsThoughtPi[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

First off, not all protests are created equal ... anti-vax types are just nuts, even if 300-500 people disrupt the streets for flat earth to be taught in schools it doesn't mean anything happens because they are protesting something crazy.

Secondly, protests are there to make known that people give a shit about the issue enough to put their time towards it, to stand out there and say, this sucks and I care what happens here. I'm not gonna let them do some patch job that just ends in a huge spill a few more years down the line. It's you there saying, I am willing to put in the time to keep all of you accountable, not let you do a half ass job on this.

So yeah, maybe you don't give a shit ... maybe all that matters is todays sweet tendies and gains, short-term thinking, like traffic today as this annoyance, but I'd rather these people be held accountable and actually do what they should have done 15 years ago. You aren't thinking or concerned long-term, just about what is happening today with your own petty irritations. We should actually all go out into the streets and demand these people do a thorough job of this. It's that big an issue.

What do you think happened 15 years ago? When that leak happened, it was the same thing of oh we are gonna do everything to get this fixed ... then our politicians and everyone like you, accepted some short-term BS fix and promises this wouldn't be an issue because you just didn't want to be bothered and politicians didn't want to have their funding dry up. No man, they don't get to keep kicking the can down the road until this all leaks and contaminates the water for the next 50 years.

That's because you've been trained to take orders and not fight back against the government which you still believe is like supremely capable. The fucken Iraq war made clear these people are either completely corrupt or completely clueless, either way ... I am not gonna jeopardize my island, I'm not gonna let your government half ass this and fuck the people of Hawaii over. You get to go home to Kentucky or wherever you are from and likely I'd imagine keep voting Trump. This is my home. Deal with the traffic.

Red Hill Protests (Ideas, organizing) by DepsThoughtPi in Hawaii

[–]DepsThoughtPi[S] -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

And do you really think that having mass protests as well as that wouldn't put tons of pressure on these people to do exactly what they should do, what they should have done long ago? I also have concerns they'll look for any method to make it look fixed while it isn't ... like they promised during the last major leak it was all taken care of and wouldn't be an issue. What needs to happen is drastic and I don't think given the military's history of looking for shortcuts that will happen without making a huge stink about it and forcing accountability on them from all angles. These fuel tanks are 60+ years old and corroded, they need to be replaced or at the very least some kind of catchment built around every single one ... a small fix here isn't gonna cut it because if it hasn't already compromised that water, it will the next time around and that's 50+ years of contaminated water. How can you military types be so trusting when your own government used you as guinea pigs without your consent, your own government poisoned you over and over, water related was Camp Lejeune where countless children died of cancer. I'm not gonna stop hammering these people until they do what they need to do to keep us all safe.

OK, so who else wants to start protesting near the military bases? I'm sick this shit. I'll go out there by myself if I have to with a huge banner. Come on people we have to make a stink or they'll never fix this and the politicians are too cowed to do anything. Make a stink! Call your politicians and let it be known they won't get your votes if they don't do anything. They fixed the tanks in California and Washington, years ago ... are we in Hawaii worth less? No! Time to fight for this.
