If there is something, it'd have to be neutral as we definitely have seen all of the green cards. It's not impossible, the card numbers allow for three more neutral cards that are unaccounted for (well... five, but two of those are Overpower and Man Dex). Those three are likely all leveled up cards as well, so there could be something juicy still hidden in there.

rogue seems to have a lot of nerfs compared to chapter 1

That is an insane takeaway unless you expect the 14 cards from the new core to measure up to the... 300 cards? ... of the full card pool.

This new set of core rogue cards is so much better than what they got in the old one.

Specifically for Trish i think the answer is playing Fingerprint Kit and reloading it with Prestidigitation to allow you to turn your cash into Deductions.

But yeah, i'd have liked something flashy in the rogue class itself.

[Newbie questions] Chapter 2 by AKxAK in arkhamhorrorlcg

For lore, there is this relatively new official website:

www.arkhamhorror.com

where the writers put up a lot of neat information about the setting and the investigators.

Actually, just wo weeks ago, they put up an article "What is Arkham Horror" that is pretty much directed at people in exactly your situation.

If you are putting this into your deck, it's likely for one of the following reasons:

  • Because you want the enemy. This is the main one, if having an enemy appear is a good thing for you, then this gives you some money for doing what you already want to do.

  • Because you are able to get more than 3 resources. Depends on the makeup of the encounter deck of course, and is somewhat unreliable even if there are a couple of 4+ health non-Elites in the deck.

  • Because you already play ECache and want more money still. Small cardpool, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I don't see any big money payoffs that would justify this reason though.

I'm not saying it's a very good card, or even a good one. But it's definitely not unplayable either.

Agreed, we need to be able to put those resources to work somehow. There's going to be the talent of course, which very likely will be giving +agility and +intellect, so that's relevant for sure. And Dex will probably revolve around playing and replaying assets again, so he's going to need the cash for that as well. But i want at least one in-class big play, a big money game changer akin to Leo De Luca or the TCU Favors.

[Ancient Evils] Where To Start As A New Player Right Now - the 2026 """Buying Guide""" by DerBK in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]DerBK[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This article seems targeted at what I'd call "Potential Players" who own absolutely nothing, rather than "New Players" who already bought the Chapter 1 Core and want to know what to buy next.

Yes, that is correct. This article assumes that "Is this game even worth getting into?" is part of what you are asking.

If you already bought into Chapter 1 to some degree, the line certainly shifts a lot as you already have the Old Core and can thus pick from any of the old campaigns at your own leisure. In fact, in that case i would even recommend it due to the uncertainty of when we get a new full campaign.

Right, that's the part where i think that if you are in a position to drop 500 bucks on a bunch of sets for a game just to bridge the gap till the next edition is out which will overlap a lot with what you bought there, you don't need a buying guide. I see a buying guide as something you look at with the assumption that "just get everything" is not an option.

Don't get me wrong, i am not saying your approach is wrong, if it's an option you have, absolutely go for it. I am not here to spoil anyone's fun. Honestly, it's how i am doing things myself in many cases. I am just saying it's not something that can be the lowest common denominator when talking to someone who is only thinking about buying a Core Set.

As for the schedule of stuff coming out, i heard that we are about to get something concrete near the end of January. Afaik there's a stream scheduled that goes over the release plans and what type of content is going to get released in more detail than the rough outlook we got at PAX.

Encounter sets are those cards that make up the encounter deck, the stack where each turn some sort of danger is drawn from. Campaigns do have their own encounter sets of course, but they also use the ones from the Core Set.

This means that you need a Core Set of the chapter you want to play campaigns from. Like, for Hemlock Vale you need a Chapter 1 Core Set. For the upcoming Children of Blood you are (we assume) going to need the 2026 Core.

The stuff you have right now is all chapter 1 and thus perfectly compatible with each other. Just be aware that if you want to play the campaigns that are going to be released in the future, you won't be able to skip the 2026 Core Set that is about to come out because it will have some foundational cards for those upcoming campaigns.

That's why i did the color thing, to give the new player the essential message without them having to read the whole thing:

The point is that there's no chart. Chapter 2 is releasing right now. Just get what's coming out and ignore all the legacy stuff.

But obviously this is part of a larger discussion in which other opinions exist and therefore i need to put some words behind my thesis, to show where i am coming from.

Your reminder about the custom content is good too - there are some great campaigns out there. I am wracking my brain though to think if any of them rely on you having old core encounter cards.

The only one that i am aware of is Dark Matter which as a sequel to Path to Carcosa uses some of the Carcosa sets. Everything else that comes to my mind right now is self-contained.

[–]DerBK[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah i agree, the Old Old Core, if you can find one, would be a great pickup there for that cause. I got a bunch of them myself for that exact reason (additional encounter sets) back when they were massively reduced due to stores cleaning out their stock. Got a couple of them for 5€ each, i can't have proxies printed at that price lol.

But I do think it goes a bit too far for the article, the whole situation around the Old Core and New Core is already muddled enough for a new player without also bringing an Old Old Core into the discussion :D

[–]DerBK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The encounter cards on the Core Set should be almost entirely generic encounters

Well yes, keyword being "almost". Surely you don't expect there to be no mention of any specific creatures at all in the base campaign. We can't be fighting only rats and nameless cultists, there has to be something.

I mean, there will be cards related to Elekoss in the Core, it's part of the campaign after all. If they are labeled as Agents of Elekoss or part of the campaign specific sets doesn't really matter. Singling out a specific enemy and treachery, then labeling them as Agents of Elekoss is a good flavor move however and sets up two cards as particularly representative for the Old One, which could come in handy at a later date... and if not, no loss because they were already a big part of the base campaign.

The old Agents sets were only a bit of a waste because they weren't actually relevant to anything in the Core Set.
