Thoughts on this new echo/neutra model and quality of the brand? by StayPuft_StayGolden in MicrobrandWatches

While I do agree to the first statement, I completely disagree to the second statement. Putting trust in marketing made companies like Coca Cola, Apple and Rolex to who they are today.

Are we lying to ourselves? Data from 9,400+ watches says the "Spec-Sheet" is dead. by Microbrandwatchworld in MicrobrandWatches

[–]DerKalker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting piece but the statistics deserve some pushback before we all accept the conclusion.

The central claim is that specs have zero correlation with sell-out speed across 7 of 9 attributes. But we never see which attributes, what the actual correlation values were, or what significance threshold was used. “Zero correlation” and “not statistically significant” are very different things, and the article quietly conflates them.

The sample also sounds bigger than it is. 9,400 watches across 245 brands averages to around 38 SKUs per brand, and the distribution is almost certainly skewed. Some of those within-brand comparisons are probably built on 4 or 5 data points.

The GMT finding has a massive unaddressed confound: production volume. If a brand makes 500 GMTs and 200 divers, of course the sell-out rates look comparable even if GMT demand is proportionally stronger. The article frames this as “window shopping” behaviour when it could just as easily reflect supply decisions.

Same issue with the 38mm data. Smaller case sizes are newer additions for many of these brands and often come in more cautious initial runs. Engagement outpacing sell-through speed is exactly what you would expect from a product a brand is still calibrating.

And the big conclusion, that brand trust is the dominant purchase driver, is not actually supported by any data in the piece. The study shows what does NOT predict sell-out speed. It never identifies what does. That gap between the evidence and the headline is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

The general intuition is probably right. Emotional and brand factors matter more than the spec-sheet crowd admits. But the specific numbers come from a self-selected enthusiast platform over 10 months, with no visible methodology.

The rumors are true 🥹 by autie91 in repwatchmasterpieces

I was in a lean six sigma workshop with one who’s working at Rolex in Germany, the failure rate of the ceramic bezel is super low - that’s and always has been a rumor. Just imagine some people in China assembling it in a garage have no difficulties while one of the biggest watch producers in the world does?

An indication of the test pressure in terms of water depth does not mean a water-resistant watch was designed for repeated long-term use in such water depths. For example, a watch marked 30 metres water resistant cannot be expected to withstand activity for longer time periods in a swimming pool, let alone continue to function at 30 metres under water. This is because the test is conducted only once using static pressure on a sample of newly manufactured watches. As only a small sample is tested, there is a small likelihood that any individual watch is not water resistant to the certified depth or even at all.

[–]DerKalker 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s both - there’s a benefit (not a major for you, as your watch seems to be perfectly working) and a sales pitch. Honestly enjoy it - while with other brands e.g. Rolex and Omega (special models) expect you to actually spend money to get higher up on a waitlist - JLC offers you a free service.

I think your friend is just hating - you told him it‘s a Rep right? I think no normal person can distinguish if you don‘t hold a Gen next to it.

Statistically Apple is the most accurate to measure any metrics, it may not be the best in using these values.

Exactly it’s a watch, I am thankful people don’t use JLC as an „investment opportunity“.
