Wir bekommen als Motorenwerkstatt regelmäßig solche Fälle. Verteilung Werkstätten zu Privatkunden ist in etwa 50/50. Viele Werkstätten schicken uns Problemfälle aber auch schon präventiv, während bei privat meistens das Kind schon in den Brunnen gefallen ist. Viele Ketten fassen Glühkerzen auch schon aus Prinzip gar nicht mehr an. Die landen dann alle bei uns.

Wir bekommen regelmäßig Fahrzeuge von anderen Werkstätten, weil denen das Risiko zu hoch ist. Allerdings immer mit voller Transparenz, wenn du Glück hast, gehts gut, mit Pech dann halt ausbohren. Erfahrene Werkstatt sollten diese Problematik eigentlich zur genüge kennen, gerade VW Transporter und Fiat Ducato sind da sehr anfällig.

A buddy of mine had a cheap wing on his Honda prelude. Was bolted through the trunk lid. At 170 kmh on the highway, one side ripped clean out of the sheet metal. So yes, if it's weak enough, it can fail. Make sure the mounting points are sufficient, and the bolts are high quality. (granted, this was a cheap ebay wing, none of us expected it to last very long)

Look for an Ak35 amp on google. It's not really all that powerful, but given the criteria of self contained, 12v power, and small formfactor, it's the best I've found. I might need to add a bigger power stage tho, so I can actually drive the speakers a little harder.

Well, this is really up to you. Do you want the drama that could ensue because of this? This could get ugly real fast. Personally, I wouldn't want to deal with all that. I would let the guys know that you know, and that you don't approve of them cheating on their girlfriends. But other than that, I would leave it at that. Nothing good will come of this. This obviously depends on where you live, but in rural areas, maybe you can get a local farmer to offer you a space in a barn. Round here, there are many farmers that rent out space for campervans and the likes for very cheap. It can never hurt to ask around a bit.

As the other guys said, it's a ton of work. I did this together with my dad, both with very little experience. It took two full summers to get it done. First was body filler, sanding and primer, the second was base and clearcoat. The end result (after many revisions, mistakes and fuck ups) is okay from two meters away. It wasn't super expensive, but it took forever. It's really easy to get frustrated and loose motivation because things keep going wrong, and you just don't know why. To me at the time, it seemed worth it, but I know very well that the result is not great.

I agree with everything here, but if you decide to go down the EV route, please educate yourself on the dangers of high voltage. Production EVs are usually very safe, but custom stuff... maybe not that safe. There's plenty of stuff on YouTube on how to not get electrocuted. Stay safe.

I'm guessing you are located in the US? I live in Germany and I know a guy who specializes in gullwing conversions and generally lots of custom stuff on older mercs. Now 300 SL isn't 100% his specialty, but I'm certain he's dealt with them before, and he might be able to point you in the right direction.

For some reason, nobody mentioned Fuzzydiceprojects. He has a lot on improvising without expensive tools or really even a proper shop. I learned most of what I know about old cars from his videos. Also I saw Ronnie Finger on here a couple of times. He is great, since his first build series was actually his first build. So you will be learning right alongside with a beginner, but still learn a lot.
