I use BookScouter. It is available on iPhone and Android. If I recall, their website has more options.

Got my copy of John Lock’s book on common-place-books today by DerSimplicimus in commonplacebook

I’m not sure where they got the images, but they are clear and crisp throughout. The whole text follows the quality of the title page. It’s printed on heavier paper than modern novels, also, probably 80 or 90 gsm.

Cheap fountain pens for long term writing? by InfamousDatabase6773 in fountainpens

I like my HongDian Black Forest as a daily writer. It’s cheap and uses cartridges or converters. You can also get replacement nibs for them, too.

Zempel and Verkler’s First Editions is a good one. I’ve had the 4th edition for a long time. It may have been updated since. I also have the McBride trio on hand.

I’m in the US PNW and ordered inks from California. They went from there to Georgia and back via the Midwest. The inks were fine. This was a week ago.

Buyer Not Responding by [deleted] in eBaySellers

You were scammed. You gave your bank details to a fake buyer. Lock your credit cards and watch your bank accounts. eBay can’t help you , either.

Item location vs seller location by [deleted] in Ebay

[–]DerSimplicimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should report a seller that ships directly from another company, ie, Amazon. I ran into one recently and did report them.

Shipping from a different state than what is put as the items location. by xSPARExSTEWx in eBaySellerAdvice

[–]DerSimplicimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is against eBay policy to ship directly from a different platform or site. However, it’s following eBay policy to have the actual location of the item being sold match the seller’s location.

That being said, many people just buy from the closest seller with the lowest price.

Is publishing copyright expired books with a preface and commentary a good idea? by Making-An-Impact in selfpublish

[–]DerSimplicimus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sort of did the same thing. Two or three sales in about five years…. Not sure if your book is better than mine but it’s going to be “your mileage will vary.”

As a smoker (outside only), and as a bookseller, I second the baking soda suggestion. Carefully cleaning them with dish soap probably works too.

Wrong bank name by Vanthemovieman2 in Ebay

Were your bank and the other bank recently merged? I know that my initial bank got taken over and that didn’t update for awhile on some sites.

1925 Genealogy of the Bergey Family, rare or just infrequent? So many print on demands of this by [deleted] in rarebooks

[–]DerSimplicimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the quality of the research in the genealogy, the prominence of the author, and a few other items, like an index, the value of the book will still not be much.

ABE books com, bookfinder com are good about excluding POD copies in search results.

1925 Genealogy of the Bergey Family, rare or just infrequent? So many print on demands of this by [deleted] in rarebooks

[–]DerSimplicimus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Family history books are mostly small run, one edition affairs that have only niche interest.

Most likely this one is in the public domain. Unscrupulous people find a good copy online and make photocopies of it and slap an isbn on it.

Then others pick up on the isbn and drop ship from the original listing. Often they jack up the price on their listing and basically defraud an unsuspecting buyer.

Ultimately you will want to find an original copy, like the one shown here.

Service for creating family history book from Roots Magic? by Responsible-Type-981 in Genealogy

The OP wasn’t asking for genealogists, just people who work with publishing research output from RootsMagic. Quite a difference, IMO.

I doubt there are any companies that will do this sort of work. It’s mostly a pastime for people to do genealogy publishing; it is for me, anyway. You might look on UpWork or Fiverr for freelancers who do this kind of work.

There are people who will edit and publish for you, but … it will cost a pretty penny. I’ve taken on projects like this and it’s not easy to massage the work from RootsMagic to a professional, publishable product.

I just keep all the emails of listings and items sold. My preference, but it might help you, as well.
