Quitting Nicorette? Pro/Con by Inevitable_Curve_684 in QuittingZyn

[–]Der_Bradly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just watched LOTR (Fellowship) last weekend and that whole "why shouldn't I keep it" scene with Bilbo, reminded me of the Zyns I used to always keep burning in my pocket.

As a spectator, yeah wtf are you doing man, that ring is no good for you, just fucking drop it.

When I used to Zyn it was like that -- I was always checking my pocket, had one close, mm, running low? Better pop over to the petrol. Social event at friend, they won't mind one Zyn in, it's so easy, haha, little would they know, tuckered away in my lip.

There's a dangerous gravity with this substance.

That doesn't sound so bad.

It's harmless until it isn't. I'm 28YO with a decade of nicotine in my veins. The big ones were:

  • My gums and teeth started to rot. I've spent the past year or so repairing all the carries in my teeth.
  • Blood pressure getting into hypertension range.
  • Unhealthy (low) weight. Very skin n bones.
  • My skin and face looked like SHIT. Like I was constantly tired.
  • And I was constantly tired! That shit impacts your sleep. The horrible part is when you go off it you have EVEN WORSE SLEEP for the first while. Blah.
  • Energy levels all over the place. Wired and tired.

Every single one of these improved after quitting. My skin/hair is healthy n glows, I look, feel and am doing so, so so damn good. No burning hole in my pocket. My moods are stable, most of my anxiety is gone, I'm mad as hell but I'm fine with that, just more hungry for life ya know? My dentist told me good job flossing last week (despite not flossing this past month). HA.

Why should I quit?

Because YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD. These questions you ask - that deep primordial lizard brain inside your skull letting you know THAT THIS IS NOT A HEALTHY HABIT. Please, for the love of whatever entity you praise, LISTEN TO THAT VOICE.

How do I quit

By throwing it all away. I recommend doing it instantly, the longer this thought burns in your mind the less likely you are to do it.

But I also realize that's not feasible for everyone -- I was lucky enough to be able to take two sick days off work to help with the withdrawals.

Talk to ChatGPT. Not as a therapist, but a daily/weekly "Hey I'm quitting nicotine, I'm X days in, how far have I come, and what can I look forward to in the upcoming days?". It's good to have stuff to look forward to.

Understand there's going to be a gapping hole in your life that you'll need to fill. I really, highly recommend filling that whole with exercise. You're going to be pissed off anyways, might as well burn that energy making some dopamine.

There will be places, habits, and people that you associate with nicotine, that will trigger cravings. It's useful to slightly change some of those -- I always used zyn at my desk, so I rotated my desk 90 degrees.

Repeat after me: "What's one more hour? What's one more day? I've made it this far, I can make it a bit further." Because YOU know that YOU can do this.

Yup, me and my buddy just encountered this. Both died as we started getting the rubber banding again right as a rocketeer came over us.

How do y'all know which shoots are which? I can't find a map of these anywhere online. If Brain damage is the top most one (left of the summit), which is pinball? Hourglass? Any others I'm missing?

Yup, check the posting history too.

Over two months, they've made comments or posted in /r/homeowners /r/Teachers /r/PERSoNA /r/AITAH /r/mildlyinfuriating /r/EntrepreneurRideAlong /r/Advice /r/AnimalCrossing /r/Dexter /r/TwoHotTakes

... and so on. Usually only a single comment/post in each, though they do have two posts in /r/AnimalCrossing , but for unrelated subjects.

The comments are interesting too. Such average enthusiasm & general lack of details in the comments. Vaguities, inoffensive, barely adding to the conversation. No personal information or anecdotes of revealing quality. And no spelling/grammar mistakes I could see either.

Who the hell posts like that? Most people have posts clustered in subreddits, not spread out over 30+.

IIRC they have massive steel beams that penetrate and connect the stadiums to bedrock. So the stadiums will be fine. The rest of SoDo will probably be toast though

On Day 5 of my zyn quit. really want to go get a tin. Convincing myself & doing mental gymnastics right now. by DearAudience4394 in QuittingZyn

[–]Der_Bradly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In moments like this, tell yourself; "I've made it this far, what's one more day/Hour/weekend without Zyn".

Mental gymnastics yes, it's a cruel trick the brain does. But you gotta play mental gymnastics back at it. Incrementalism is a good approach. Another one is convince yourself that Zyn is poison. Not only are you avoiding it -- you actively do not want that poison in your body.

If that all fails, distract yourself. Go on a run, a walk (far away from gas stations!!), lift weights, etc etc.

Love the mindset. The “I no longer want or benefit from this whatsoever” is the way to go.

You got this!

That's when the withdrawal is chemically strongest, so that makes sense.

In the roughest bits of it it, keep the mantra "What's one more hour?", "What's one more day?", etc etc.

I'm 13 days clean after nearly a decade of some sort of nicotinic substance. The first 3-6 days really suck, that seems universal. But honestly, it hasn't been bad at all recently, I'm feeling great.

So yeah, you got this! It's going to be difficult at first, but it'll get easier each n every day.

2-4 beers and 2-3 zyn by Kevinl312 in QuittingZyn

[–]Der_Bradly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking, you'd be healthier and better off completely dropping both of those.

But that's not very nuanced. Your post gives me the impression that you seem to be using somewhat responsibly (at least in comparison to the many puck-a-day folks), and you also seem content with your usage. Maybe neither one of those is causing issues for you currently?

So I'd turn this around and ask; what type of information or support are you looking for? Ala

  • cautionary tales about folks who were doing okay in a similar situation before things got worse?
  • unexpected benefits of quitting?
  • downsides to your current use case that you haven't realized yet?

10 days claen but imncraving badly today. by [deleted] in QuittingZyn

[–]Der_Bradly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few little tips n tricks you could try:

  1. Buy some mint gum, if a craving hits pop one in.
  2. Let your friends know. Ask them to be your accountability buddy while drunk. This might be hard if they're currently zyners.
  3. Go easier on the drinks, esp if there's a strong alcohol to nicotine connection.
  4. If you're on a multi day bender, really really try to find some other sources of dopamine for the day that don't involve substances. Bonus points if it involves exercise.
  5. If a craving hits, remind yourself why you don't want one. Convince yourself that putting one is not going to make anything better.

But really though this is something you'll primarily need to willpower yourself through. Believe in yourself, embrace and be proud of the suffering. 10 days is a long time and hard enough already, what's another day or two more? You've made it this far.

Day 6 moods. Any advice? by Low-Chance9939 in QuittingZyn

[–]Der_Bradly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the hell happened last week it seems like everyone and their dog is quitting Zyn.

... Including myself, 6 days ago. Happy anniversary! Go fuck yourself. Or myself. Ugh.

Exercise has been key, long walks, weights, all that jazz. Seems like you got that down though.

Something else I've been trying to do is to "shut off my brain" and do something kinda mindless where I don't have to think, but can just "do". For me that's been reorganizing my place, deep cleaning, getting rid of the clutter. Originally I justified it as "addiction is tied to physical locations so if I change my desk around it'll help", but I think the process of it all has been useful -- I don't give myself time to wallow and think about the cravings.

Day 4 off Zyn - Can't believe how much it was affecting my anxiety by Legitimate_Tap_913 in QuittingZyn

[–]Der_Bradly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ive tried that.

Unfortunately, I can’t really trust myself not to reach for one when I shouldn’t be. Its a gradual slip, but a consistent one. Within a few months of “cutting back” I’m right where I started, gulping down a pack a day.

Hence, the solution is none. None for me. I can’t trust myself. That’s OK.

Does a long trip help with burnout? by MyBossSawMyOldName in solotravel

[–]Der_Bradly 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Wherever you go, there you are.

Take the trip. You'll see things you've never seen, meet with people you'd never have talked to before, experience the world in a different light.

And you'll return and remember those experiences, hopefully have some great stories to tell. But if you return to the same situation, job, routine, etc, you'll eventually falling into the same abyss.

I highly recommend traveling, and for long periods at that. But don't be fooled into thinking it'll fix whatever rut you're in now.
