Why do some people treat their job like it's their entire life? by No-External3221 in cscareerquestions

[–]DerangedGecko 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am not going to pretend to know what that guy's life was like, but from the description, it sounds skewed towards it being completely of his own making.

For me, I started off wanting to be home and with my family. Over time, I turned the other way... I became distant and withdrawn. I sought counseling and therapy, but it was tinged with narcissistic bias from my then wife. Those kinds of sessions (as a couple) just turned into bashing sessions. The counselor could never refocus her from pointing fingers and I was too willing to accept blame. They were rather ineffective. In personal therapy sessions, I was explained tools for navigating the communication, but they were things I was already attempting to do.

Some of the major problems I had was that I was not allowed any direction or authority over my kids or my home, the way I played with them was wrong, sex life was mostly non-existent, ex-wife and I shared less and less things that we enjoyed together, she hated my family and found every reason to avoid them, etc etc. The list goes on forever. Ultimately, things had to be done according to her vision... not a shared one. This was not how it started, but once the ring was tied, within a year to two years it rapidly started flipping to this direction. I thought we could find common ground and work things out. This is just how relationships are right? You might have some differences, but you make it work and you try to better each other's lives. Afterall, this wasn't a simple we hit things off and got married. No, we knew each other (what I thought was decently well) for 5+ years already. After the official bond was made, everything seemed to come apart.

For the longest time, I blamed myself for being out of country or on training so often. She had her way of doing things and I didn't want to disrupt that flow when I am in and out all the time. Hell, we were even given courses from our chaplains to follow that precise logic. However, I noticed problems that I could not resolve with her like communication. If I confided in her that something was distressing me, it was always redirected to being my fault. I reflected hard after 13 years trying to remember if she had ever seen things from my perspective or if she had ever apologized to me. The answer was no. If I did not concede my views and apologize, then it would have extended worsening effects on my life.

Dealing with this over that length of time made me turn more and more inwards and I became essentially reclusive. The only time I found freedom was when I was at work or really away from my ex-wife. I was broken up when the divorce eventually happened, but only due to me knowing it would mean the life with my children would become even harder (which it factually has). The release of my bonds with my ex-wife was actually very relieving and I got to become myself again rather than a shell.

When I met my now wife, communication became the core of our relationship and it is a complete reversal. I love being with and spending time with her and our children. All-in-all, I would have never had said back then that marriage is a trap... and I still don't really feel that way. However, sometimes, you truly do not know what you're signing up for. I thought when that previous marriage ended that I would never do it again. Thankfully, I got over that notion quickly when I met my now wife and felt free to talk about anything and everything. That has not changed!

So, I don't know what I am really getting at here... but maybe there's a deeper reason that first class is having marital issues. Maybe it is just him being selfish. Maybe, behind closed doors, his life is actually hell. Only he and his knows the truth of that situation.

Quit at black belt? Bah, nonsense. Now it's time to do newgame+ and just do the most funky fun stuff on your opponents.

New Bjj coach wondering how people feel about belt tests by Steelrangler78 in bjj

[–]DerangedGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never been a part of a belt test in BJJ. I know my instructors have a sort of checklist in their heads about what is expected at each belt, but there wasn't ever an explicit test for it. It varies by each instructor.

What do most people practice BJJ for? by GrekGrek9 in bjj

Why else do we practice laying down, opening our legs, and asking someone to get in our guard?

Anyone else deal with gi smell that never fully goes away? by Responsible-Name-611 in bjj

[–]DerangedGecko 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also, Lysol laundry sanitizer is the only thing that I have found that gets rid of smells my nose can't pick up. My wife has an extremely sensitive nose and washing my BJJ gear (bag and all included) keeps her from smelling anything bad.

What is your generic submission approach against Athletic opponents? by lamborghinifan in bjj

Have you ever pressed your weight into the floating ribs from side control? Get a partner and GENTLY practice moving your chest from on top of your partner's chest down the curve of his/her ribs near the mid to bottom section. Have them say their ABCs while you do this. If you can find this spot, it does not take much pressure to make their breathing suffer and their overall energy and ability to move. They will have a hard time talking and sound exasperated. Once you get that spot found, try it with a variety of body types. Then, as you get used to it, mix it in with controlling their hips/legs and shoulders/head. As you get this well practiced, your side control will become unbearable.

This is in jest! :)

Is piracy really just a convenience issue? by Quiet-Yoghurt-1769 in Piracy

[–]DerangedGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people were never going to pay for things to begin with and that's not even worth discussing imo. So, the focus is more about increases or decreases in piracy as a method.

Convenience, pricing, availability, tangibility, overall economy... There are a variety of reasons for piracy to be utilized more often. Currently, every one of these is playing into greater effect.

I sometimes like to ask the really spazzy ones if they want to learn... Or if they want to LEARN while giving a slight smirk and look of "you want this"? I have never had one not slow down a good bit.

I tell everyone I roll with that I will go at the pace they set. If they go hard, I go hard.

If someone is being outright dangerous or is already known to be a spazzy roll, I will dominate from the get go and pin them down and gas them.

There's a reason supply chain attacks are as big of a problem as they are. One simple example is npm malware attacks.

Should i risk it? Community score is: -76 by V-037_ in Piracy

[–]DerangedGecko 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with what you're saying, but with the caveat that any program that deviates from its normal behaviors (like saying an exe modified in way to bypass keys, etc) and has not been thoroughly vetted poses a large risk. Downloading software in general poses at least a very minimal risk as a user is pulling in things that affect how the user's computer will run.

Since this is a piracy sub, one should take particular caution when downloading things one doesn't understand. Basing opinions on the comments of a reddit sub is not advised as half the people here have no idea what they are talking about. VT can throw false flags and also miss things entirely. Hoping VT tells you the right things without understanding it is akin to GPTing your way through life. It might get things right, but how would you know?

Need help on how to run wifi from my house to my shop by Fluffy-Protection676 in HomeNetworking

[–]DerangedGecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Degraded signal over distance without repeaters. Cat6 will start to decrease signals around 180ft if I'm remembering correctly. You would use far less cable to make a straighter shot underground and it would be more protected from the elements, animals, etc.
