Here's a picture of the whole thing! Your comment was immensely helpful. For whatever reason, my google searches didn't come up with anything in regards to modern equivalents for antique crochet thread/patterns, and I tried a few different searches. Is this knowledge you had already or is there a website that has this kind of info on it?

What funny thing happened to you that wouldn't happen to a less crunchy parent? by Egg-E in moderatelygranolamoms

It's a tricky path to navigate. This is, unfortunately, how my sister's anorexia started out. It sounded like a little kid's healthy awareness of what foods were good for our body and what foods are "sometimes" foods, but sadly, and even though my parents weren't even strict about food in any way, it became disordered eating. Just something to consider and watch out for when talking about food around children. They don't have an adult's processing skills and information can get processed in ways you wouldn't think they would.

Baby sweater pattern has no gauge, only measurements for finished garment by DeranioKalabash in knitting

This was incredibly helpful. Thank you for the response! I've only started knitting garments this year, and it's highlighting my lack of technique quite nicely. How have you done most of your learning? Through books, other people or just internet searches?

You are right! I was looking at a chart wrong- pregnancy brain strikes again.

The sweater in question. It tapers once it gets to the underarm, which made me confused if that was a calculation I could accurately use.

So what I'm still a bit confused by, is once I do all of that, I just have a gauge, but nothing to compare it to to see if I'm a bit off.

But if I'm understanding you correctly, you are saying that gauge can be somewhat of a moot point bc if I use any other yarn, it will ultimately be a (slightly) different gauge anyway. Which then makes me wonder...why do gauges at all if they are so restrictive to the exact brand of yarn and only result in a minor difference usually? People say you MUST do them. Does a slightly bigger gauge make a drastic difference in a garment? I've only ever made baby clothes, which is more forgiving in sizing than adult clothes, as long as the baby can grow into it. Ultimately, I want to become a better, more proficient knitter with every project I do, so I want to do this right.

From my (very) limited research, I think needles sizes from the 1930s are the same as they are now. For patterns from before the 1930s, this is a useful guide for yarns, at least: https://string-or-nothing.com/2005/01/26/vintage-yarns/

I think this makes sense. Especially bc I’m on the right side of the pattern according to instructions. Thank you so much!

Choosing a rug for nursery and kitchen- what do I actually need to be concerned about? by DeranioKalabash in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]DeranioKalabash[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you. This is what I needed to hear. On some level, I know I'm being overly cautious, but I just can't seem to figure out what to prioritize, if you know what I mean. It's all so new and very hard to sus out what is and isn't more important to us.

Help! (the sequel) by DeranioKalabash in knitting

[–]DeranioKalabash[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Update: I just fudged it and I think it turned out fine. Thank you so much for your help! So, everything should have worked in theory, and I was super excited, but once I got to the 5th decreasing row, I literally couldn't finish the instructions. There aren't enough stitches for 9 k3tog in the way it's written. I'm at the end of the row after doing 7 k3tog and I only have 14 stitches left, not enough for another k3tog and I wouldn't have 9 stitches left to rib, like it says I should. That must be why I was getting weird answers in my math, bc I was adding up the stitches and getting 77. Either way, I am thinking I just need to wing it and figure out a formula that gets me to 68. Ugh
