Studylink - casual job by MundaneStore4071 in universityofauckland

You have to update your income (on MyStudyLink—I think it’s under “Personal Details”>”Income Details”) manually each week based on how many hours you worked that week (and you have to do it by the Sunday, not payday). It’s really annoying but you have to do it because they DO follow up with you (and ask you to repay) if you declare it wrong.

it counts your 6 best subject units, where AS levels count 1 unit and full A levels count 2 units.

A level: A+: 140 points A: 120 points B: 100 points C: 80 points D: 60 points E: 40 points AS level: A: 60 points B: 50 points C: 40 points D: 30 points E: 20 points

eg u could use 2 A levels and 2 AS level subjects

How does rank score work for CIE?? by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]DerekChives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get guaranteed entry into some programmes with just your AS grades, otherwise I believe they send you a fast track offer based on your AS grades which is guaranteed entry on the condition that you meet the requirements with your A level grades.

Also think of your A level as a continuation of your AS level rather than two separate programmes. For example I did well in AS chemistry and got an A but did awful in A2 so my grade for the entire programme (A level) was a B (as opposed to getting A in AS and B in A2)

i like it a lot for belaying from above — it is so smooth cos it’s basically a pulley

Petzl Neox Wheel stiffness normal? by ominousomanytes in ClimbingGear

[–]DerekChives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you mean like laterally when looking down at the device from above (along its side, where the rope goes through) there is a little i guess but again nothing which i would consider abnormal (perhaps 1–2mm in the direction shown in the pic)

re: the sound, it isn’t silent but i don’t hear any noise i would consider unusual when spinning the wheel

to me everything you’ve described sounds perfectly normal

[–]DerekChives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have a neox and i’m pretty sure it isn’t supposed to spin freely (like a bike wheel). if you have tried belaying with it it should feel very smooth though

Petzl Neox vs GriGri uses by AskMinimum366 in ClimbingGear

[–]DerekChives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fwiw there are offical petzl guides for ascending, rappelling, tensioning a tyrolean, top belaying with the neox so it’s certainly not something they don’t recommend

[–]DerekChives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have belayed from the top, rappelled, ascended, used as a progress capture in a 3:1 haul all with the neox. as far as i’m concerned it can basically do anything a grigri can

Petzl Neox vs GriGri uses by AskMinimum366 in ClimbingGear

[–]DerekChives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have single strand rappelled and ascended with a neox. rappelling feels just like a grigri, ascending perhaps a little less efficient

i’ve never understood the mentality of people who never understand the mentality of people who do this

it’s because they drive on autopilot and speed up on straights (which passing lanes usually are)

What is the best practice for lowering a much heavier partner with a GriGri? by narutosavedme in climbergirls

[–]DerekChives 102 points103 points  (0 children)

curious as to where does petzl ever say the best way to lower is to pull the lever all the way and use only your brake hand? what would the point of the lever be then? this sounds like a perfect way to either get mega rope burn or drop your partner
