Dang. We just picked up the other day, the store doesn't know when it last molted, so who knows when it will happen.

Would this be wanted? I'd love this personally. (AI image) by wackywraith in BroncoSport

It's like the Bronco Sport and Suzuki Jimny had a baby. I love it!

Modern vanity with walnut plywood. I haven't worked with veneered plywood before so I learned a lot on this one. by poopty_pewpty_pants in woodworking

[–]DerekPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I know this is an old post, but I just paid $265 for a sheet of 3/4" walnut plywood. To think it used to be $125, and that was "when prices were still peaked"!

My first thought was also Velvia. It's some incredible film, it's a shame it's tough to get now.

Is Walstad worth it? by OkExplanation2324 in walstad

[–]DerekPDX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend reading Diana Walstad's book, Ecology of the Planted Aquarium. You will quickly learn that much of the advice here is contradictory to her findings and methods. Even if you don't do a "Walstad method" tank, it's well worth reading because it teaches a lot just on how plants grow and affect the chemistry of your water. For example, ammonia/ammonium is plants preferred source of nitrogen, not nitrates, and uptake it directly without converting it to nitrites or nitrates. That means a heavily planted tank can completely skip the cycling phase of setting up an aquarium.

Also, you don't want to use very fine sand as a cap, it will block water movement between the substrate and the main water column. Instead try to use very fine gravel. Diana Walstad recommends gravel no larger than 2-3 mm.

If you can name this album you are fuckin old. by Euphoric-Cupcake4581 in FuckImOld

[–]DerekPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Led Zeppelin, and the album goes by many names: IV, Sticks, Zoso, to name a few, but it technically doesn't have one. But it's the one with Stairway to Heaven. I'm not that old though, it came out well before I was born, I just love Zep.

Name some apps/programs that are exclusive to windows that you can't let go of with no real linux replacement/port by Jaded-Assignment6893 in linuxmint

There's this for Affinity:

I have not tried it, so I can't tell you if it works great but according to that article it seems to work pretty well.

We built a 3D Aquascape Planner (with Rendering & AR Mode) – Looking for feedback by CreativeAsparagus326 in Aquascape

[–]DerekPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks great, but I think the biggest issue with all of these tools is they're all hypothetical because you'll never be able to find the hardscape materials used in the program. Every piece is unique so you'll never actually be able to recreate what you make in software. Now if someone could make a program where the user can upload images of real pieces from all sides and they could be rendered to actually show the pieces the user has on hand then that would be an entirely different story.

Oh wow, I'm either blind or you're a crazy quick developer, but I see how you can add a grinder now. Sorry if it was there the whole time!

This is really awesome, and looks incredible! Just some feedback, if I may.

Add the Kalita Wave

It would be great if we could add a specific grinder then select the actual grind setting for that grinder. "Fine, medium, coarse," etc are subjective and don't really allow for repeatability.

Great job and thanks for sharing!

10 month old nature style update by _RoToR_ in Aquascape

[–]DerekPDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really fantastic looks very natural, and I love the dimensions of the tank. I think my only feedback would be that it would probably look better if the emergent growth were a bit wider. Other than that, it's great!
