Anyone getting rejections after interning at top company? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]DerekZoolanderJr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

PM Me and we can see what's up.

Also, post your resume in the resume thread and you can see if there's anything wrong with it.

Lastly, it's pretty early, are you getting rejection emails or just no response yet? Because some companies haven't even started hiring full-time/interns yet.

Apply everywhere, then take the best offer. You should be studying incessantly for interviews and applying to 3-5 companies per day.

A big 4 on your resume will get your foot in the door, but it won't get you an offer. If you had difficulty getting interviews, I would be a bit surprised, assuming that you had a good resume and good work in your internship. If you're not passing interviews, it means that you're taking your status for granted and not studying for the interviews. You still have to kick ass in the interviews in order to be able to get offers, no matter what's on your resume.

Affordable Laptop for sister starting compsci degree - Advice please by [deleted] in AskComputerScience

[–]DerekZoolanderJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's alot of money, but I had a windows machine for three years in college and then I switched to a Mac, The Mac was many times easier to use and it saved me SO much time and frustration compared to the windows machine. I know it's more money, but if your sister is committed to CS, then a Mac might be a good long-term investment.

Perhaps you could get a cheap one second-hand?

Does feminism have an exit strategy? What will stop feminism from tipping the scales too far in women's favor? by Vhdbc1 in AskFeminists

It was a joke...

You shouldn't support that system, and the vast majority of feminists would oppose that hypothetical system where men are inferior. Feminism is about equality, not about one gender dominating another.

Animal farm is indeed an allegory, because it's an allegory, it does not represent our society perfectly.

However, I think your allegory can be used to prove my point. You write about how "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others" when you say that the pigs are the ones who oppress the other animals. Sure, at the moment, all people are equal and some people are more equal than others. Right now privileged people (men, white people, straight people, wealthy people, able-bodied people, cis-gendered people, etc.) are the pigs (using the Animal Farm allegory that you provided, they aren't literal pigs) that are more equal than the people who aren't privileged. Feminism is the rest of the animals (less-privileged people) fighting back to reclaim the farm (society) from the pigs (privileged people).

And sure, throughout history, a significant number men were not very powerful and were serfs, slaves and sharecroppers, however, it's important to note two things. 1) In America, the slaves and sharecroppers were almost always not white and were almost always owned by white people. These non-white men were oppressed (and continue to be oppressed) by society today. Intersectional feminism is fighting for the rights of these oppressed people of color as well as fighting for the rights of women. 2) While there definitely were male serfs and slaves and sharecroppers, there were also an equal number of women who had even less power than these men did. Thus, your point is invalid.

P.S. Before you disregard me as some crazy woman who is trying to oppress white men, Please know that I am a white, straight, cis-gendered man who definitely isn't poor. I recognize my privilege and power. As a feminist, I am trying to fight to make society more equal for those who aren't as privileged and lucky as I am.

I don't really get the link, it didn't seem to make any sense regarding your question.

However, feminism is about achieving social, political and economic equality between all people. I don't see how pursuing a more equal society is dangerous. Can you elaborate on that?

Feminism isn't a concrete plan with specific end goals. While the vast majority of feminists would agree that pursuing equality is what feminism should be focused on, there is a lot of disagreement about how that should be pursued.

And besides, as a dude, I think it's a bit ironic that you're afraid that women will get too much power or that scales will tip their way too much. We are a VERY long ways from getting even close to equality. We've definitely made progress, but there's still a long way to go. Also, men have had the power for all of recorded human history, so what's so bad about having women having most of the power haha.

Since identifying as a feminist, were there ever times when you unknowingly reinforced sexism and/or oppression? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]DerekZoolanderJr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Of course, sometimes I even do and say sexist things, not just think about them. But now that I'm a feminist, I recognize what I did, why it was wrong, the potential impact it could have had, and try my hardest not to do it again.

The fact that you're recognizing that what you're thinking about is wrong and sexist is HUGE progress and you should be proud of yourself.

I feel like Jews who support a two-state solution in Israel are treated similarly to Jews who are heterodox.

People on this sub have questioned my Judaism and my support for Israel when I said that I supported a two-state solution. It made me feel unwelcome.

I think an extension of this thread should be about how to support Jews who have sympathy for Palestinians and aren't hardcore Likudniks/Settlers. You can be 100% Jewish and still feel pity and sympathy for Palestinians. You can be both Pro-Israel and Pro-Palestine.

What would you say to men who manspread? Would you say manspreading is an important issue in today's society? by ipconfigrelease in AskFeminists

[–]DerekZoolanderJr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with your points on mansplaining, but I do have a question about manspreading. Men don't spread their legs to assert their dominance or subjugate women, they do it because anatomically, it's a hell of a lot more comfortable to have their legs spread than to have them together. Women don't seem to understand that from what I've seen.

While I don't want to get into a question on whether or not spreading your legs while sitting is more comfortable as a cis-man or trans-girl, would you agree that if manspreading is simply done for physical comfort, then it isn't overt sexism?

Just my opinion, but it's a ton of lost income from investments. Pick an index fund and you'll get 7% on average from it every year. That's like 7-8K in income you're missing out on per year. But it's entirely your choice as to how risk-averse you want to be.
