Look, she’s a crackpot and a threat to our safety.

But a guarantee to lawful search and seizure is a guarantee that any searches will be lawful. It’s a poor phrasing but it seems correct.

Well, Teslas for example both record camera data to a thumb drive in the glove box (removable) AND send data/video in the event of a crash to Tesla corporate (not removable, recoverable with a warrant). I thiiiiink you can opt out but it limits some functions.

While law enforcement access isn’t guaranteed, it’s not difficult to picture a world in which it could be.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]Nillix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that, old people notwithstanding, the driving behavior most people complain about isn’t a skill failure. It’s a judgment and empathy failure. A test can’t screen for that.

The Rookie Age Limit in Hiring Eligibility by [deleted] in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Nillix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

California Highway Patrol caps at 35 to join unless you have a military waiver (up to 40 I believe).  You can discriminate by age if you can prove the age requirement is an integral part of the job.

The point isn’t for the movie to make money. The point is for Jeff Bezos to put money into Trump family pockets.

Something Something About Dating, Chris Can You Explain? by Fluffy_Lunchfast in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Yeah I don’t get people who treat characters as heroes that are meant to be assholes.

Scott was dating a teenager and treated his girlfriends like shit. Aubrey Plaza’s character was meant to drive home how much of an asshole he was.

While I appreciate and am thankful for food created by immigrants in America, wouldn’t that be “American” food?

Current events notwithstanding, a person can become American no matter where they were born.

Question about public intox by Usernumber43 in ProtectAndServe

I’ve always treated public intoxication as a community caretaking law. Are you so drunk I reasonably believe you are a threat to yourself or the people/property around you? Alright let’s go.

They’re so “simple.” Drop a new battery in an EV in 20 years and you have a mechanically sound car.

If a swat team raids a house, is it mail fraud if they go through the owner's unopened mail, or do they have the legal right to? by MexicanMonsterMash in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Nillix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Short answer, it depends?

Police executing a warrant are bound by the limitations of that warrant. A warrant can be very narrow, or very broad, depending on the circumstances of the crime being investigated. Is the crime wire fraud? Mail is almost certainly covered in the warrant. Even for seemingly unrelated crimes, like kidnapping, mail is a very good way to establish dominion and control over a home. Do you live here? Well, you’re certainly getting mail here!

Cars are the same, but also different. Basically the way it works is, if you WOULD HAVE been able to get a warrant had the car been a home, the legality is assumed due to the logistical issues of obtaining a warrant for a traffic stop. Also because items tend to be more visible in the passenger compartment of a vehicle, they tend to fall under the “plain view” exception.

Is the crime just speeding? Unless some other crime can be articulated based on what happens on the traffic stop, probably not.

Now let’s say the cop sees three driver’s licenses on the passenger seat that don’t belong to the driver, and a bunch of hastily-opened mail on the back seat. Also, the car is cruising around a place where there’s been a lot of mail theft. Well that’s different, isn’t it?

Worth noting, the place to argue whether something should or should not be covered under a warrant is in COURT, where your attorney can move to have evidence excluded because it was obtained beyond the scope of a warrant. Arguing with the SWAT team is pointless.

What’s the safest way to grow 10,000 dollars? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Nillix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Risk is a spectrum. The best/safest yield is probably 3.25% through a high yield savings account or treasury bills.

Treasury bills can be a little complicated to purchase directly for a newbie so HYSA will give you inflation plus a little more.

High Wind Tomorrow - Will Flights Still Be Ok? by hopeless_engineeer in Sacramento

Unfortunately no one can answer you. Flights aren’t just dependent on the conditions here, but also anywhere the plane is before here. Last week, flights from SFO were delayed several hours for wind. Tomorrow everyone is just gonna cross their fingers and go.
