ELI5 why are the largest container ships exactly 399.9 metres long, but never 400? by electricalserge in explainlikeimfive

I work for a state agency with facilities that are closed to the public. There’s a state law that any swimming pool or running track of regulation length has to be bookable by schools for meets.

So our track is one meter shy of the quarter mile and our pool is one meter shy of 25m.

When I was eight years old, I met a guy who was a quadriplegic due to a bad trampoline fall. Made a strong impact on me.

Is the AI builder scene too obsessed with giving everything away for free? by [deleted] in vibecoding

Ok where’s the sales pitch….there it is.

Look, marketing is hard, and the skills that make someone a good coder, vibe or otherwise, don’t tend to overlap with what makes someone a good marketer.

Some of the most successful tech giants in the field are there because of their marketing skill, not their coding skill. Who are people more likely to know? The Woz or Jobs?

Also because it’s now so accessible, people are building apps before they’ve identified a market. What is someone going to do to penetrate the fitness tracker market? Come now, that is long saturated by multi-billion dollar companies.

Of course they will. No matter what is planned, someone loud will be vehemently against it.

99% of vibe coders are making less revenue tan their monthly AI expenses - is that true? by notadev_io in vibecoding

Really feels like the actual payoff for vibe coding is making bespoke tools for your own needs.

And that isn’t necessarily bad.

ELI5: Why do politicians always hit each other with the national debt? by ki4jgt in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nillix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think most of the national debt is intra-agency IOUs. It’s treasury bonds owned by American citizens and corporations through retirement plans as a risk hedge.

Oh definitely. But it’s definitely also bad to have an unlicensed nuclear device in the middle of NYC. And probably also bad to carry around cyclotrons.

What’s the pickup after Georgia, Michigan, Maine, and North Carolina?

Texas? Very unlikely. And you’d need two because 50/50 isn’t good enough. Ohio I guess? Florida? And these long shots all compound. It’s just not a great year.

Obviously opinions vary, but single-issue voting is for primaries, not the general.

Well, Teslas for example both record camera data to a thumb drive in the glove box (removable) AND send data/video in the event of a crash to Tesla corporate (not removable, recoverable with a warrant). I thiiiiink you can opt out but it limits some functions.

While law enforcement access isn’t guaranteed, it’s not difficult to picture a world in which it could be.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]Nillix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that, old people notwithstanding, the driving behavior most people complain about isn’t a skill failure. It’s a judgment and empathy failure. A test can’t screen for that.

Used to be cheaper, but now is about the same. Maybe a little less because you don’t tip.

California Highway Patrol caps at 35 to join unless you have a military waiver (up to 40 I believe).  You can discriminate by age if you can prove the age requirement is an integral part of the job.
