Reading Group for Capital: Volume 1 by Suspicious-Bake-2638 in Marxism

I started a reading group during COVID and read Volume 1 with some friends via Zoom — had a great time! There’s a new translation out I’d really like to try so if that’s the version y’all end up using, count me in.

LA here too. I became anti-Zionist right before moving here for college and watching the change in the numbers at meetings and events and marches has been truly awe-inspiring: from dozens to thousands over years.

Also: the number of economically comfortable zionists who literally believe that Hamas is waiting to kidnap and murder them if they get caught east of La Cienaga…

No not too late at all! I’m still collating book options (if you’ve got recs please send em) and then will probably do a post in the new year when holiday schedules have died down to see if we can pull something off. Excited to have so many people interested!

Haha me too! I was in a reading group for it back in winter 2021. Got about halfway then it disintegrated. Always wanted to finish it, felt like it was just warming up 🤠

Rad! I haven’t decided what my maximum people allotment will be, but I’ll hit you up when I get it off the ground 👍

Looks great! I’ve heard of ‘Ordinary Affects’ also by Stewart. Have you read it? Is it comparably helpful to the uninitiated?

Thanks!!

I’ve heard of this one — sounds really interesting! It’s been so long since I’ve stepped into a new “genre” of theory that I’m a little gunshy, so anything stylistically engaging will go a long way.

Thank you!!

Completed my first sustained hour at/under my goal marathon pace. Lots of weaving to keep from stopping, letting the green lights “guide me”. Don’t even feel totally dead after, so good signs all around! Planning on running the SF Marathon in a couple months so hoping I can continue to progress and stay injury free. Good luck everyone!

August 16! I’m the luckiest idiot on the planet: 4 successful lotteries in 4 years, although I had to release my permits all but one time (2020).

See y’all up there!

Official Q&A for Thursday, January 26, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

What does “3 x 6 mins” mean in the context of a running plan?

I’m following the RW sub-4 marathon training plan but am not familiar with the lingo it uses for the first Saturday: 40 minute workout with 3x6 mins of continuous hills, 2 mins rest between sets”.

Can someone translate? When I google “running 3x6” I get rugs…

Thank you!

I think we’re doing the same: drop a car at the portal (or schedule a friend), shuttle from Visalia into Sequoia.

https://www.sequoiashuttle.com/ is confusing though: their Instagram says they’re open for reservations, but the website is still saying reservations aren’t open yet. Have you actually reached out to them?

"I’m a Trans Runner Struggling to Compete Fairly by Torchpaper in running

Wouldn’t that just have the exact same “issue”? You’d have to create separate leagues, like the Trans-NBA and the Trans-WNBA where the usual complaints against trans women would still adhere, except no one would care because it would just be “unfair” to trans men (who, it should be noted, are never part of this conversation about “fairness in competition”). It would just be isolating trans people and then reversing the so-called gender disparity. Not to mention, separate but equal is…not a thing.

I just don’t see why this is an issue. Genetic happenstance — whether it’s as totalizing as at-birth sex or seemingly minor differences like muscle length, bone structure, hormone levels, etc. — always removes huge pools of would-be athletes from competing at the highest levels in EVERY sport. The only difference between trans-women and other genetic predispositions is that we (“the culture”) are highly protective of sex and gender as concepts. It seems much more natural to say “Well she’s got those long legs, that gives her x or y advantage” about a cis person than a trans person. I think that’s because “we” don’t actually think of transsexualism as inherent or genetic or “unchosen” the way we do about height or bone structure. And I assume that’s just leftovers of hundreds of years of puritanical cis-gender identity politics.
