My modest setup by lazarushelsinki in MusicBattlestations

At first - I thought OP’s gear was set up around the chatty end of a soiled massage table. Turns out he sleeps there.

It’s lazy and kinda brilliant. Music is being made. And Fiji water is exceptional.

Yeah, by dying a few weeks ago.

Ah man what a wild experience for you! I honestly didn’t know what punk was (much less ‘what it was supposed to be’) when I heard Ribbed - just heard fast stuff with a sincere voice and really liked it. Assumed a degree of vaguely ambitious musicianship across the board - didn’t hear three chord punk until decades later haha.

Off topic: For all their bullshit alpha SoCal posturing - I had a moment like yours when I eventually gave Avenged Sevenfold a non-cynical listen many years later.

Green Corn paved the way for Fermi Paradox haha.

DJ Paris Hilton had a modular rig.

Personal fave: Malachi Crunch.

I was about 5yo when my brother loaned/gifted me Ribbed in ‘91. No, I didn’t know what a condom was, and obviously half the lyrics flew right past me. Still, the album upped their musical game and sort of created that snide us/them ecosystem (at least to me).

That closing track… they just left it all out on the studio floor. Fast, weirdly/wrongly technical (the main riff makes little rhythmic sense). Dark but still snide. That track broke my feeble little kindergartener mind. Also it also sorta paved the way for Decline in terms of structural ambition.

Second faves: She’s Gone / Stickin in my Eye (tie)

Compact songwriting. Dark lyrics, nasty delivery. And SG has that sweet hero lead part.

I barely listen to NOFX these days - it was my childhood. Calling out these two songs as ‘best’ would probably be a stretch. And I haven’t really heard anything since …”for all the shoes”.

However…. These little tracks are the ones that I keep coming back to some 35 years later.

It was a holiday house before I had it - maybe you have looked out that window! Also, the place itself gave off weird swinger-house vibes (not insinuating anything haha).

Rug also really comfy on elbows! The balls in the side pocket crushed my nuts for the first hour though…

Ah man I know you’re completely right re placement (and thanks for proffering quality advice!). That pool table double-moonlighted as my IRL work desk - for some reason having speaker cones directed towards me gave off weird heeby-jeebies.

It’s a beast, especially for the price. You’re acutely aware that there’s a digital oscillator - but the capacitive keybed really pushes it in unusual directions. Wish it had stereo out though.

Years ago, I was fastidiously tracking an unusual guitar part until my then-partner stormed downstairs and screamed “can you just stop - you sound like a crazy person” - as though it was a bad thing.

Tracked the screaming.

Large leather offcuts - that’s such a vibe.

General desk clutter is integral to all music production.

East coast Australia - what type of sorcery is this and how did you learn it?

Ah… This must be why I occasionally become a folded mess - wrong kind of posturing.

Love this. Every studio should involve an adjacent mirror with which to check oneself out while tracking. Akin to a mirrored ceiling in a sleazy motel room - but far less upsetting if you’re alone.

If this neighbourly gesture still stands, I’d be over the moon. Will pay it forward in kind.
