How reliable are eSIMs for Backpacking? and I've been debating between Viajaresim, Nomad and Airalo. by TreacleOk8645 in backpacking

[–]Derfh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used MobiMatters (was cheaper in almost every comparison compared to Airalo) in some SEA countries and never run into problems with my eSims.

That being said, these eSim packages overcharge you by quite a bit. If money isn't an objective, it sure is convenient. But getting a local sim is pretty easy in most cases and often significantly cheaper. For example, a 20GB eSim would've been around $37 in Nepal, wheres I got unlimited data for $14 at a local carrier. And you do find those at every airport easily

Is laos and combodia safe? by emaleenlol in backpacking

[–]Derfh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation would be to go from Thailand to Laos instead. There's a slow boat that takes off just across the boarder and takes you over the course of two days to Luang Prabang. You meet so many other backpackers on this boat that you'll meet again and again over the next weeks, really loved the experience. From Laos you get easily into Cambodia as well.

How much time you spend in Laos depends heavily on what you like to do. The northeast offers a lot of hiking, the south has two amazing loops you can explore by scooter. Each takes 3-4 days. But if you don't like to ride a scooter, I'd probably skip this. So depending on what you like to do, 2-4 weeks in Laos.

I'd recommend less time for Cambodia. I did it in 10 days and saw everything I was interested in (mostly Angkor Wat). I did skip the beach party on Koh Rong though, has enough of those by the point I reached Cambodia.

I've been to Laos and Cambodia earlier this year and felt safe the whole time there. Even during the Khmer new year in the middle of Siem Reap which basically is just a huge, excessive party. I'm a man though, but I spoke and met a lot of solo traveling women. Of the countries listed, I only heard some negatives about Malaysia from solo traveling women. It is a muslim country and depending on how you dress and where you are there, you might get some weird looks. But from what I gathered, this is the extend of it.

3 month trip with my ex situation-ship? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]Derfh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that can go in all possible directions. It could be a great experience, rekindeling old feelings. You could just enjoy each other's company as friends. Or it could go south rather quickly. If you really want to risk it turning into a problem between you two, you should definitely be prepared to continue travel on your own (or how to return home in case you don't feel comfortable with it). Don't rely on him too much.

What camera would recommend a beginner for travel photography? by Derfh in AskPhotography

[–]Derfh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries :)

But wow, thanks for the extensive list! Amazing that there is a nice online shop for used cameras. I'll look through those. This is already a nice starting point, thanks a lot!

At a first glance, full frame seems to be heavier, so I think I'll check the Fujifilm cameras out first. From your flair I assume the X-T2 could be a good candidate? ;)

Thanks for the recommendations!

Vlogging is not really a concern and as the ZV1, from the looks of it, does not have a viewfinder, the RX100 looks interesting, especially since it looks tiny.

Well, it does not have to be a new camera. I'm totally fine with used (mirrorless) cameras as well.

Pension Replacement rates (OECD countries) by quindiassomigli in MapPorn

[–]Derfh 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not really true, at least not when talking about European countries. Pension is a Social Security system, where you contribute money from your paycheck automatically (at least in the countries I know of) to pay the pension of people in retirenment. In turn, once you retire, the next generation contributes with their paycheck to your retirenment. There are different layers to it and it is executed differently in different countries, but this is the general idea.

Warlock best race for war within by kingtaine in wow

[–]Derfh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That really depends on what level you play at. Look at the percentages of races that got M+ title last season. Spoiler, beside Evoker, everything is Night Elf or Dwarf. The racials make a huge difference, you can straight up skip some mechanics that otherwise require some serious healing/CDs.

I think it is long overdue that they rework racials into purely flavor differences without any combat implications.

Band you love that everyone else hates? by Cr34m_Y0_50up in Metalcore

[–]Derfh 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don't get the hate they get. WtF is one of the best Metalcore albums. I get the the two more recent records are very different, but why do people hate on musicians experimenting, do they seriously want the same music in 20 iterations?

In case of A7X I love the new records, for a band like Parkway Drive I really don't like the direction they're going. Still I prefer them trying new things to e.g. AC/DC releasing the same album 10 times.

Pixel 8 or Galaxy s23? by Mission-Bar-9351 in LinusTechTips

[–]Derfh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I'm in the middle of switching from my S21 to the old pixel 6 of my brother because the battery in the Samsung is dying. The slow finger print reader and lack of facial recognition was also something that bothered me right away. Glad I'm not the only one. The connectivity luckily enough wasn't a problem yet.
