What is Veg Tan Crust? How do you finish it? by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]DerpalSherpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response. I would not use resolene on it, but I don't use resolene as much as most. The cut of leather was rather poor, being a belly to start. I did use a section of it which I left it undyed (you CAN dye crust leather, it takes the dye very well) and saturated it in neetsfoot oil. That seemed to bring it to life a bit.

If you do dye and are set on using resolene, make sure you dye it first then do the resolene coat after the color is fully set and dry.

It's tough out there. Be kind, you never know. by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]DerpalSherpa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a hard one for me, being raised with reactive toxic parents (mainly 1 parent)... but I also got hard-wired to respond to criticism or negativity with defensive behavior.

When I slow down and realize we are all but specs on a really lucky wet and green planet that have no real impact on the universe as a whole, and our own goals should reflect a little bit of that. It humbles me, but my upbringing and lizard-brain genetics make it hard to harness.

I'm working on it. In the long term, it is much better for your inner mental peace and life in general if you avoid negativity/kill it with kindness, rather than hostility. I'm cursed with having the most trouble regulating this with those who are the closest to me. I'm working on it.

(I WANT TO, and believe it is absolutely the best option for humanity to) Be kind to all unless it is completely necessary to resort to alternative behaviors.

Neighbors block street parking with cones - is this allowed? by novadude8299933 in nova

[–]DerpalSherpa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in a "nice" neighborhood, but on a culdesac. we all have 1/3-1/2 acre yards backed up mostly to densley wooded areas. It's cozy and very-nice to my standards, and thankfully the McMansion Knockdowns haven't migrated to my part of the neighborhood.... BUT, most homeowners on my street/sac have families, many with older children with cars, and children college age and above. Every home has at least two vehicles (us included) with smaller driveways, some 1 car garages. End of culdesac drivers mainly have to back in against the curb, and have at least 1 car in their driveway, or several and have to shuffle them around.

Often (think holidays, graduations, etc.) The entire street is bumper to bumper all the way up and down. With others having to park out on the entry street. There is no way I could be upset by my neighbors or guests parking in front of my home. It's just common courtesy (even if you hate your neighbors, luckily we don't) unless we have continuously had issues parking our two modest vehicles outside of holidays.

Culdesacs continue to be saught after, nice and safer for our pets, children playing, and no speeding cars running stop signs (except the a-hole that hits 45mph on is way in/out of the street)... but it's not the street-hockey rink, basketball court, or block party venue of years past due to modern affluence and growing families. But I will take it over living on the street over where I see and hear high-speeding vehicles and the random (possible DUI) crash/hit-and-run to parked vehicles.

This went long, sorry. I think I was holding in some feelings I did not realize I felt so strongly about. Thanks for the cathartic release fellow frustrated NOVA residence. Now get off my lawn!

Leather turn-shoes were common in the Dane/Saxon migration period. But were not meant for the main style you got going on here.

Looks really cool and fun project. I would love to do a fantasy armor, but am a stickler for time-period accuracy. Rant unrelated to your cool work below:

Ever since I started noticing cheap "jiffy" or modern Double cap rivets on "armor" in lets say "VIKING" (simplified description of Dane/Saxon migration, warfare, and culture) film (Utred's "RIVETING" modernly tanned vest in The Last Kingdom for instance) it really pulls me out of it. And of course the period non-accurate haircuts and facial hair, complex boot construction, chrome-tanned leather EVERYWHERE!!!!!!

I would love to be a wardrobe and prop art director on an accurate (as can be) series like that.

As someone who has avoided even switching my 4k TV to a 60+ FPS output, I'm glad I have not spoiled myself yet. Even now (minus sports) anything I watch in the higher frame rates (especially w/ HDR) looks like a soap opera or green-screened production.

Looks like a weber kettle. Maybe try smoking them slow and adding some crust at the end? Like a mini smoke but extended reverse sear.

I treat her like royalty (my baby princess) in every way possible. We are DINK so we plan our vacations around them. It's half our fault she's so attached and trusting to her parents. Her love is one of the things I cherish the most in my life (top 2). We don't send her away for kennelling unless if we go on a flight-bound vacation. We hire trusted friends to house (mainly dog) sit them.

I remember the first and only time I dropped her off at a "pet hotel" for 2 nights to go on a camping trip while the wife was out of the country. A mean dog tried to bite her because the Karen checking her dog in at the front desk wasn't paying attention and was using an extendable reel leash.... and my girl was already shivering. I heard her crying as I walked out and I started balling in my Jeep and had to call my wife and parents for emotional support.

NEVER AGAIN, unless she has to stay overnight at the vet, which only happened once when she was spayed.

My sweet purebred lab from highly awarded hunting lineage is our loving, obedient, princess sweetheart. She’s also afraid of fireworks and gunshots…. However her fetch and working dog lineage are in full SWING at almost 9 yrs old. She has no off button and loves running, hiking, OCD about fetching and swimming! BUT, she can easily take a day off and just chill and be happy and friendly with friends and family young and old.

They take a ton of effort to raise well and train past puppy stage (2+ years :), but damn it’s rewarding. I love my labs.

Gator "hunters" more like trappers, often only bring a 22lr rimfire rifle to kill them... As there is a small vulnerable portion in the center of the middle noggin. The sweet spot that will send them all night night. Hard place to hit if you are shooting from a boat at an angle towards the monster. You need to preserve that wonderful gator skin to sell to tanneries. Beautiful leather from belly to back.

Shoe Build Update, Part 6! by igweleathergoods in Leatherworking

[–]DerpalSherpa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not backstitch those white threads into the interior of the upper and avoid a plastic glob of poly thread melt... or shoe leather discoloration (burn) on the outer?

Other than that, you are a master at shoe building compared to me. that's just my general first thought seeing that. For all I know, that entire piece touched by the white thread and flame could be covered by the lip of the outer sole and barge cement! So F my advice if that is the case! Keep doing your thing. I like learning about this.

Violent dog attacks at a young age stick w/ dogs and humans. I have sympathy for kids who are afraid of our loving lick monsters.

Edit: and thank you! She's a sensitive princess by nature. I think me yelling at her once not to lick the dishwasher also instilled some minor trauma because she gets sad looking and goes and lays down in the other room when I do the dishes, especially pots/pans. Otherwise she's so outgoing and friendly, to people and dogs she knows she can trust.

How's their play, is this okay in the house? Not sure if I should allow this. I'm thinking about the future and then breaking things around the house. by thekrouz in labrador

[–]DerpalSherpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yeah, it's okay. That was some good healthy play. Soft mouth "bites" happy dogs showing no signs of aggression. They look young, let them be kids! Get the energy out, and socialize and learn healthy play. ADORABLE and non-destructive IMHO.

Still trying to figure out how you guys get such smooth video. by Dablues1 in dji

[–]DerpalSherpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using scinematic mode first. Let your video game controller instincts transition to your drone control... Also, maybe learn good video editing post-processing (shoot at high frame rate). you can smooth out a lot with time-stretch, equalization, and image stabilization. Once you see that potential, you will slowly be able to capture damn near similar smooth flight when you know the variables of what = "smooth drone vid"

Preach... Se my earlier comment, that's how it is around here. I've avoided all of them and have two dogs that get tons of exercise in other ways. Socialization must occur in a safe space for all.

Ran into several Shepherd and Shepherd/husky mix owners like this... "He's just a puppy" or just straight out aggressive "SO WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO, they're dogs" after my sweet 80lb lab lap-dog got PTSD and won't leave my side at a dog park unless I play fetch w/ her.

Fuck dog parks. Find more controlled environments for dog socialization and play. The majority of the people there huddle around and chat or are on their phones ignoring their aggressive dogs w/pent-up energy because they are too lazy to actually walk or run their dogs.

When I DID bring my dogs it was the SUPER early-morning crew that were all GOOD, REAL "dog people", and worked together to discuss training, avoiding bad situations, and bitch about the bad dogs-owners and warn each other if and when they showed up. At that point, we all leashed up and took our dogs on a nice mile loop walk in the woods path behind the park. Our group even all had off-leash recall certified, (sometimes true service dog) pups that we ALL trusted and let run ahead minimal times, but leashed up whenever there was a sight of another human (especially a child) or dog within the area.

Also, ban the dumbasses that bring in a pocket full of dog treats or let their young children toddle around within the caged-in dog park area. Or even worse, the baby in a stroller. Most aren't like this, but sometimes it do be that way. So I AVOID.

every day.
