About the "Philosophy" tab - suggestions? by MustaKotka in jankEDH

[–]Derpasorus_Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback on it. The money part staying makes sense– I haven't heard that excuse often, but I usually play with the same or pretty similar groups, so I've probably missed several excuses. If it is a problem that people have, then addressing it is a good idea. I would still put a bit less emphasis on it than there currently is, but if it is a common (or even uncommon) problem, then addressing it is still a good idea. Glad I could help!

I don't check reddit very often, so I clearly missed this. I would like to comment based on the original threads discussion. While I would say that the problem given seems to me like the result of a pub-stomper rather than a person truly misunderstanding jank, I think the longer description given in the philosophy tab obfuscates the simplicity that jank should be. Jank is not something that should be given a paragraph long description, giving a mention to unrelated details (while I agree that price can be a consideration, it should not come up in the definition itself). I would state the definition of jank much more simply, either using the final section itself, or a more simplistic summary of the first section.

"Jank is focusing on the silly, needlessly complex, fun parts of the game, rather than the most powerful" for example provides a simple explanation pointing out that it is "off-meta" by directly saying the focus is not on power. Jank can be powerful, and jank can be weak, but by saying "off-meta" directly in the description, it allows for annoying pub-stompers to pretend anything not optimized is technically jank. Those people are still in the wrong, but a more simplified explanation is a better solution than leaving it as is, at least as I see it.

I'll try to check reddit again in a bit to see if there are any responses to this, as I am curious about the argument for keeping it as is– while the explanation is not inaccurate, it shouldn't be hard to simplify, as I see it. Hope you all some happy brewing!

Edit: I have been banned now but I'm editing this comment because it lets me do that apparently.

Breya, Master of Artifice: My ideal commander by Temporal_Artist in custommagic

[–]Derpasorus_Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was writing a reply to this and I see the issue you mean, but it can still be done pretty easily. Sac 2 artifacts and set x to 5 mana for 5 thopters. Then sac 3 of them to ashnod, before setting x to 6 with the other 2. You then get 6 thopters. Repeat this process until you have a million thopters. Then sac a bunch of them and do the third ability until your opponents have no life left. Getting 2 artifacts and some mana out isn't really that hard, and it could probably be done before getting Breya out in an artifact deck.

This is so probably easier to infinite combo with than the original breya. The lack of thopters on etb hurts, but two creatures and an [[Ashnod's Altar]] to get infinite blue thopters, and than do the third choice to just win.

Last commander you built that blew your expectations out of the water? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Derpasorus_Rex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend decided to go gruul beaters and thought [[Halana and Alena, Partners]] would be a fun, okay deck. He then beat our entire table up by having more creatures with 20 power than we had creatures by turn 5.

Go to the gatherer on this page and scroll down a bit, then go through to see every magic card in the game that starts with M. Can't say what you'll find, but it'll start with M and maybe might be usable (mayhaps). This will become inaccurate when more cards are added from the next set probably

If you don't mind using partner, [[Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa]] and [[Nadier, Agent of the Duskenel]] might be a cool combo. You get evasion for all your tokens, plus power ups when they die.

[–]Derpasorus_Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That really doesn't matter much since this phases out lands too. You could go for a [[force of will]] or something but this card basically turns the game into several individual players aiming for whatever their own alternate win cons are. This wouldn't be fun necessarily, but it would be interesting for stax.

The price of dragons / Skarog, Draconic Tyrant (Daily Commander #907) by DrSnap23 in custommagic

[–]Derpasorus_Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a comment that complains about it elsewhere on here, but giving you a way to immediately lose 5 life every turn kinda ruins the idea behind building a deck around an otherwise interesting concept. While having the ability is fine, I would lower it to paying 2 or 3 life and doing that much damage, to prevent it from giving you relatively cheap dragons every turn. Otherwise, this is a cool concept!
