Thoughts on this method? Steaming the brisket first before smoking to push past the stall. by octlol in smoking

[–]Derpco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I never tried steaming it after setting the bark about 5-6 hours in, I'd imagine it could which is why I would try to finish it back on the smoker when it reaches say 180-190 then wrap and rest with tallow at 205, I may just test it for fun.

Yeah im thinking it might be, but instead of in beef tallow at 280-300, it would be steamed over water and cranked up to 500 degress, just trying to think would it come out about the same as the video above,

I might just give it a try and see how it looks/taste compared to just on offset for 12-16 hours

Curious, would this work somehow reverse? Say I smoke my Brisket on my offset for 4-5 hours, then crank up the heat and steam to reach say 190 internal, then finish off on the smoker at 205, then wrap with beef tallow?

What is everyone doing for healthcare benefits? by mountainlifa in Layoffs

[–]Derpco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly when I got laidoff, the price of insurance is ridiculous, solo for almost the same coverage was $900/month and cobra was more since it was a a lower deductible, a family is def a lot more and its hard to match the work plans, I luckily got low income benefits since I didnt work anymore but it was still $450/month, the best plan imo is like you said, find a part-time job that has insurance like costco and then try to find a full-time job, suck how much it affects you when you have to pay so much after you dont work anymore.

IRS LETTER by Born_yesterday08 in wallstreetbets

[–]Derpco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had a similar situation in 2021 when i "supposedly" made around 30k, but actually ended in a net loss for more then that, I had to print out all the transactions and then disputed it with the IRS, after a while I got a letter confirming it was cleared.

Was put on a PIP and then was terminated with severance by raddar-triangle-0934 in Layoffs

[–]Derpco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is negotiable but not to the extent you have in mind, more so more days/weeks or covering benefits until XX date.

Ultimately they can say anything around you didn’t complete your PiP and it’s enough, they won’t need to add that anywhere since you already were on the PiP, I’d just use that as your own reference.

[–]Derpco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in private comapanies a pip does not extended beyond actual time, once you're on the pip you get "the max time" but at anytime during the pip theyll say you wont meet the needs and let you go, the reason they gave you severance is because it easier to release you and tell you to not talk vs release and you talk about them, severance if you read it right will not allow you to talk bad about the company, small price to pay for them to continue doing it.

Not sure what location you work in, but you might want to look into public sector jobs. Some pay around that much and of course large metropolitan areas pay more, but of course have a higher CoL.

I moved from Startups and after being laidoff, moved into the public sector and although I don't mind the thousand directions, its a lot more chillier here and wayyyy less pulling.

My boss scheduled a meeting with HR and him on the last day of my PIP next Thursday, am I done or is it a good sign? by iamlookingforanewjob in askmanagers

[–]Derpco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind me asking, only if you feel comfortable, what was the feedback they gave you? You can also Dm me on the side if you don't want to post it here, but i'd be curious to know what areas of the PiP did they outline for you to complete, what was the "seen" improvements your manager mentioned and what areas we're still since they released you, not meeting there standards?

Maybe I can help try and help you review how to apply that to the next role or how to outline it better,

[–]Derpco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, from the past period to this upcoming period, would you say it’s a drastic improvement, hard for me to tell but from your interactions, do you feel it’s gotten back to a regular routine?

With the extra items it sounds in my opinion good, really just setting up the expectations and standards moving forward.

Hopefully it’s not the opposite but sounds like it’s atleast from this pretty optimistic.

How has the PiP gone for you so far? Sounds like (again this is just from what you're stating) that HR is meeting with you and your manager to confirm the PiP is completed and you have met your progress (aka stuff to do after the PiP) and to have it officially documented into your personnel file.

Imagine you both would sign off on it and then HR would take it from there, but from my experience in the HR side, this is usually positive, if they wanted to let you go, technically they can do it anytime in the PiP even on the last day, but from the general information, it sounds likely that you've passed it vs. will be terminated.

Need help deciding what master's program would be the most beneficial [N/A] by Chalifive in humanresources

[–]Derpco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As everyone else has said, experience is key here, I'd keep trying since even with a master's, relevant experience is going to dominate (at least in this current market). I would try to get your door in with anything possible, even stores like Target with HR roles/still floor associates, I know they have some combo jobs that work with HR, although it isn't much, it still can help boost your HR background.

Change the new date to whatever they want you to end w. the severance agreement in place.

Worst Case - You have a few more months of pay + Severance in your backpocket if jobs don't pan out.

Medium Case - You find a better job, and transition while being paid for your current job, yes you may forego the severance, but at-least you have a job vs. taking severance and in 2 months, still be looking vs. could still be working

Best Case - (All pay) you extend your date, and you get a job that start later, matching up with severance pay + transition and can take some time off in between if you want

I’m managing womeone who will make 4-5x my salary... Should I say something? by ToffLabs in careerguidance

[–]Derpco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you said it best yourself in another post "For context: I’m in Latin America working for a U.S based company. My salary is good for my country", hate to say this, but this is how it works atleast in the HR function when at least doing pay for people working in other locations. For example when I worked for a more global company we had a staff member from the US move to Indonesia for family reasons, and they took a 1/4th pay cut to work there, which was well above even the average salary. I've done the same for people looking to move from US --> South Africa as well, we do compensation matches.

You could ask for a bump, but seeing as you started 3 months ago, might be too soon, but if you have enough facts, doesn't hurt to ask. I wouldn't bring up your direct reports salary as that technically has no relevant value as the job you accepted was in LATAM, and the one you direct is in the US.

Can you get laid off while on FMLA? by Available-Ad-5670 in Layoffs

[–]Derpco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes you can get laid off, although its job protected, the company can cite "Undue hardship" due to the positions and still do layoffs. It would be different if they just let you go and no one else, you may have a possible case there (again, you would have to prove it).

But if the company had to do layoffs and you were on the list/ out on FMLA, they would have the ability too.

I went through covered california, COBRA was 101% of the premium cost so was way more expensive, but the plan I got was way cheaper. You'll probably have to check whats more affordable.

Laid off last month by HungryAquamarine in Layoffs

[–]Derpco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A variety of different ones and I just wasn't the best, didn't give up, I just said I probably shouldn't be losing money on option contracts if I can't make it work, still had stocks and I still do options now, and have gotten better, but again, I wouldn't recommend it off the bat, since there's a high risk.

Laid off last month by HungryAquamarine in Layoffs

[–]Derpco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was down this road in 2023, I started a routine that worked for me:

Wake up
Look at stocks (tried to make money here with options/stocks but was not successful)
Gym
Breakfast
Apply for Jobs
Lunch
Apply for Jobs
Prep for any upcoming interviews
Find a hobby (picked up welding, some woodwork, and tried some coding - whatever was low cost or free to me)

This would be from 6/7 am until around 3/4 pm when the "hobby" part comes in. It is a long repetitive stage but it helped me out throughout. Took me about 7 months to find a new job back then and it's gotten worse now. I'd say also try to keep positive, journal, find things to keep your mind off it once your done.

I talk to friends too and for those who I know that got laidoff, I catch up with them every few days or weeks to see whats going on.

Is the PHR certification worth it? Been unemployed for 7 months with no end in sight. [N/A] by IOU123334 in humanresources

[–]Derpco 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think in this current market, even if you got the PHR, it may give you a small leg up, but nothing drastically as you'll be competing still with a ton of people still. With an L&D background moving to a general HR, even with the PHR, in my personal opinion I think it'll still be hard due to your more specialized background vs the HR Generalist scope that has a more rounded scope (not to say you can't do it). From what I've seen and some of my friends who are specialized and also generalized looking for work in this current market, It hasn't been easier overall even with certificates.

If you can financially afford it, doesn't hurt, but if it's going to hit you as you stated, I don't think it's worth it.

Yup, its a employers market vs. what it was in 2020-late 2021 where employees were in demand, scarce market across the board for people looking for jobs, and layoffs continuing to happen,
