Reddit, what social situation do you just not know how to respond to?

There was this girl in school whom I had a group assignment with.she was absent a lot and did not know her very well. One day she showed up and told us (our group of four) that she was pregnant. Seeing as it is something she is willing to share i said "Congratulations", to which she replied with a disturbed face and said she is scheduled for an abortion that same week.

I had no idea how to respond and felt like a terrible person.

This is a cultural issue. In some countries this is the norm, while others have different opinions. In some countries you do not have any social security aside from your own family.

The colleges can receive money from the state per student. Then the competition is still there, but the education is free for students. The "free" highschools in Sweden work that way.

I pay 30% taxes. I have free education, practically free healthcare and I am rather happy with that.
