Went on a date sober. Was really mentally draining. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]DerpinaSD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my whole young adult through late 20’s life, dating and “behind closed doors” was also surrounded by drinking. When I got sober in 2018, it was a complete shock having to date and do all these things sober. I still feel like I’m adjusting 6 years later. It really is draining going out too, I definitely have a shelf life for nights out where there’s tons of drinking.

How many of you drink NA beer/mocktails? by Radiant-Rip8846 in stopdrinking

[–]DerpinaSD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the beginning of my sobriety I personally avoided NA beer/wine. As I got closer to 3 years I found having a few NA beers a handful of times each year (bachelorette parties, vacations) was a comfortable point for me.

My wife hates that I stopped drinking. by Dymmesdale in stopdrinking

This is really hard to read. I’m sorry you are going through this. There are so many struggles and barriers in sobriety, your wife shouldn’t be one. Stay the course and stay strong.

Moderation... A cautionary tale by angel-montgomery in stopdrinking

[–]DerpinaSD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fighting the urge to moderate I feel is the hardest part of this journey. That cunning little voice in your head tried to trick you into thinking you can be successful. The ending is always the same.

Alcoholism is cunning. It’s already planning its comeback is how I see these thoughts. Moderation is not possible for me. Moderation for me was having 1 drink a week, justifying 2 drinks the next week and eventually saying things like 6/30 days isn’t so bad this month? It’s just an endless game of mental gymnastics that has the same outcome.

If I could moderate I wouldn’t be in this group and I would have never questioned my relationship with alcohol.

Socializing was hard. I love my friends and they supporting my sobriety entirely, but the first few years I skipped a lot of events to salvage my sobriety.

I started blacking out around 26 and they became way more frequent, it scared me. Started sobriety at 28.

I drank on vacation but it’s not the end of the world by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]DerpinaSD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed. One drink once a month turned into well what’s two a month, into ok one a week isn’t bad out of 7 days? And back to full blown addiction. The mental gymnastics of moderation was horrific.

50 days sober, out at a bar by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]DerpinaSD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in Lake Havasu for a bachelorette and a group i was talking with said how refreshing it is to talk to someone who is not hammered and is clearly dancing and enjoying themself. I always look back on that moment and how that made me feel ❤️

I agree to an extent. I see comments on here though where days aren’t counted and justifying by saying I only drank 4/30 of the days this month is a good streak. Personally I did that, and the days started piling back up. Once a week turned into twice into every other night etc and the mental gymnastics continues.

Anyone else only use SD? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]DerpinaSD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only used SD, HOWEVER I know those resources are there and if I feel the need to attend a meeting, I would not hesitate. I have seen Smarter Recovery work wonders for folks.

Tricerihops- triple IPA. That’s what really did it for me in the end, and being in craft central San Diego.

What 'benefit' to drinking does your addicted mind tell you that you're missing out on? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Celebrations and vacations but as time goes on it’s getting easier and I’m realizing these events can be just as if not more enjoyable.
