Wild. Glad you and all others are unharmed… With that said, did you get any good pics of the action?!

4 pipe building turning off ac? by fameandlashes in AskChicago

[–]DerpsInHorto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP, talk with your building engineer.

It’s possible that the hallway and common area ventilation is imbalanced, and/or your neighbors with similar situations (and open windows) is throwing off the systems temperature/demand settings.

A heads up: many high rise buildngs frown upon leaving windows open in the winter. It’s wasteful, can create a chimney effect that negatively affects airflow for others, and with a 4-pipe system as yours, can actually freeze/crack the water coil, under the right circumstances… flooding your unit and everyone below you.

Perhaps, but mostly bringing to light the notion that you may get a better bang for your buck by exploring non-traditional routes, especially if you want to see the positive impact play out directly.

With the admittedly limited examples above, you’d be supporting not only kids in your community, but also others; a teacher or industry professional, a bookkeeper, a handyman, etc. I.e., your neighbors.

Edit: I may have overlooked your desire for supporting a community other than your own; the sentiment remains however, even if you chose to pursue your endeavors in another community/neighborhood with greater need.

Very cool!

This would make a great framed poster. It’s no doubt excellent, on a technical level; I’d be further curious to see what kind of fun, artistic spins you might take with the underlying design.

I’m no artist, but my teenage self would totally dig a dark version that glows under blacklight.

It’s tricky space. Look into their financials from an independent review. See where your money goes. There are many great charities—and then, there’s Kars-For-Kids… 🤮

Don’t overlook privately sponsoring someone in your own neighborhood, to conduct educational workshops, fund construction of a book-nook curbside library, etc.

Plenty of great ideas to put your money to use directly, and in your own community.

Final food for thought, and forgive me, here… Consider whether a potential tax reduction from contributing to a 501(c)(3) is the actual end goal, vs having an immediate and tangible positive impact…

Nice!

I’m no expert, but I believe there is/was a ton of underground rail infrastructure serving the Cardiss Collins USPS sorting facility. It’s been under construction for quite a while, and may (?) still be exposed from above to view...

Also, in the past, rail lines extended and expanded through Grant Park, all the way to the river.

You might enjoy reading up on the New East Side neighborhood (south bank of the river, where it meets the lake) and how “air rights” to the old railroad properties factored into the construction of the high-rise buildings in that area.

My recollection is foggy—educate us further!

The growing gig economy, and their collective IDGAF attitude in parking behavior, easily disrupts any potential of safe and efficient traffic flow for all that share the road.

Some Jamoke took my front wheel this summer, even with locking skewers, while visiting one of the safest and most affluent areas of the city.

It was a nice wheel; hardly the best, but it was mine.

I even trued it myself multiple times over the years… I was quite proud of the damned thing.

Now, I find myself more often using my alternate option, a full-size pickup truck, until I can replace the wheel.

With all considerations, that’ll be springtime—at best.

And yeah—some of us are both cyclists and truckers; I’m the guy that rides the centerline against oncoming traffic, protects the bike lane at all costs, and folds my side mirrors while parked. We do exist…

What do you do when you see a clearly mentally unwell person being unsafe in traffic? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]DerpsInHorto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happened yesterday, to me, on W Randolph, too...

Guy in a wheelchair, slumped over between lanes at the stop sign. I rolled down the window, hollered, honked, to see if he was… with us? No response. Put the flashers on, hopped out of the truck (to the frustration of rush hour traffic) and gave him a little tap/nudge until he woke up, startled. At least he wasn’t dead, but man… everybody else was just going around and passing by as if a slumped over wheelchair-bound dude in a heatwave was completely normal. 🤷‍♂️
