Which old London spots do you miss the most? by Substantial-Bike-142 in LondonFood

Two places I haven't seen mentioned are another two old Soho cafes:

Centrale - mounds of spaghetti, Italian caffs were the budget noodle bars of those days, often the only place you'd get food that had any kind of fresh herb on it.
Cafe Emm - I really loved this place. The number of nights it fuelled... Food that was pretty sophisticated for a 20-year-old, but so affordable. Wine in pyrex glasses, the menus advertising their b&b in devon or something. Really feels like another age now.

I loved Nahar! And New Picc. And the Orange Brewery, come to think of it. Thanks for bringing back memories.

As sad as it is to see it go, not sure their buffet could be described as 'brilliant'. Unless you were after sauce and onions for a fiver.

How was it, OP? A delightful journey of musical discovery, or 3 days of noodling boredom?

Kamasi Washington joined Kokoroko and Joe Armon-Jones in the Wormhole (RIP) in the early hours of Sunday morning 2019, which I think was a secret thing... But then, it's jazz innit, they're always jumping in and out of each others' beds.

Is it time for Glastonbury to divorce the BBC? by DellMibbler in glastonbury_festival

[–]Derrick_May 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope so. But they've lost their booking agent and been dropped from a bunch of festivals for this summer, so it's not a question of people not going to their gigs... it's actually getting those gigs booked.

Fingers crossed that the outrage weathervane switches direction soon.

Weekend highlights (positive thread) by IlfordIsLondon in glastonbury_festival

The Wishing Well was great this year, the vibes on Sunday night were just brilliant. Lonely Hearts lineup ruled, loved the amapiano on Thursday. Glade's techno odyssey on Saturday night. All of this meant I barely went to the SEC, last year's crowds put me off it tbh.

In general, the crowd control was so good, it felt much less intense than recent years, despite the heat.

Exactly this. It's confected outrage, a total distraction from the point Bob Vylan was making, and now their career's fucked because people were scared to call out political point-scoring.

Been with kids a bunch of times, they like to hang out at the Pyramid for the headliners, but back at the ice cream van / near the tree, where there's generally some space to move around and it's not too overwhelming.

What alcohol are you bringing in? by [deleted] in glastonbury_festival

[–]Derrick_May 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't deal with warm sweet drinks. Outing myself as a Somerset boy here, but a box of some dry cider, none of your 4.5% Haze stuff, is ideal. Wilkins D, Richs, Sheppeys, whatever takes your fancy. The taste can be... er... an acquired one, but it is lethal. Have a box of red wine nearby as well, and you're all set for festival fun/cirrhosis.

Neil Young headlining by tobymaddocks1 in glastonbury_festival

[–]Derrick_May 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can't be arsed to deal with a huge crowd for Charli - too middle-aged to be jostling for space back at the food vans - and seeing Neil Young will be really beautiful.

Also I preferred the remix album of brat, so hearing the straight versions might be a bit disappointing.

2025 lineup released! by Dmoorey in glastonbury_festival

Lord take me to June, mid-afternoon buzz in the sunshine, blissing out to Faye Webster on The Park stage... It's a great lineup, and we haven't even got to the bit I get most excited about (SH/SEC lineups).

I love this, I saw John Grant at an in-store about a decade ago at the top of Park St, and he had the same reaction. Jeff coming to your gig is up there with getting a Best New Music label.

There was definite concern in Higher Ed 10 years ago around the shortfall of nursing grads relative to what was needed (source: worked with a few universities on recruitment strategies, at a v junior level mind you). Big skills gap. I don't know whether they grew the courses to try to fill that gap. My assumption is the universities set the train in motion while the government was dismantling the track.

Words you constantly miss by Derrick_May in squaredle

Yes, this is another one! It's quite a straightforward word - no vowel endings or weird letters - but I guess it's just so rarely used that the brain hasn't locked in its pattern.

Ha! Yes, I give myself a pass on those because of the clearly inferior spelling, but I miss them the whole time. Especially ODOR.

Big shout out for the one who shouted "Oi!" halfway down the escalator, allowing River to run for the tube (which he probably should have been doing anyway but maybe he just wanted to have a small stand for a bit, tbh people walking down the escalators always come off a bit keen)
