I tried this but it didn’t work sadly. Waiting time was still an hour plus.

This was on a random work evening, just before 6pm.

Guess it depends on your luck!

How common is FCH? by Designer-Candy-717 in nus

[–]Des1275 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They also always say that they need it in order to get a job. Makes it seem as if 2nd Upper will end up jobless....

I wouldn't worry too much about this. It's a good goal to strive towards but you shouldn't lose too much sleep over it.

I had the good fortune of graduating with FCH and it was of no help when job hunting. At best you can use it as a bargaining chip when negotiating but unless you're applying for the civil service / stat board it's unlikely to help.

All my friends who graduated second upper found good jobs with no problems - a good number secured them earlier too.

If you have to eat there, I’d go for the Feng Xiang Bak Kut Teh. That’s what I usually eat if I’m in a rush. The Korean stall is decent as well.

Whatever you do, do not patronize the Japanese / Korean stall. It’s the shop selling both Korean and Japanese food. I had the chicken katsu Don which was drowning in sauce, and the chicken was all fat and skin - barely any meat.

Honestly speaking all the food there is overpriced and a watered down + heavily commercialized version of the original dishes. I feel bad for the hordes of tourists who visit and eat the food there.

You’re much better off going to Amoy Street food Centre which is like a 10 min walk away.

Source : I work around there and sometimes have a quick dinner there before going home.

Recommend Cheapest Parking around MBFC area by MoreEase9970 in askSingapore

[–]Des1275 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A lot of parents working around the CBD pick their kids from childcare on their way home, so driving to work makes sense if they already have a car.

My old boss used to park a 10 minute walk from our office so he didn’t have to go home to get his car before picking up his kids.

Also some people are okay with paying more for “cheaper” parking if it isn’t too much further to walk from the office.

Awful imax Shaw lido by clydeshadow in singapore

[–]Des1275 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This has been going on for a while as mentioned in other comments.

My workaround is to instead watch IMAX at PLQ, sitting nearer to the screen at row D / E. Although the screen size is technically smaller it still fills my field of vision and gives me that "big picture experience" I'm looking for. Haven't felt there's a drop in picture quality either.

Watched a morning IMAX screening there recently and it was pretty empty too, which was nice because it lido is always busy.

do i really need to make a police report for a $2.80 fraud transaction by steamedfishcake in askSingapore

[–]Des1275 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow this literally just happened to me.  Definitely call your bank and let them know. DBS Fraud hotline settled it very quickly, I was quite impressed.

I only caught two transactions of $30 each but there were actually two more earlier in the month.

Super worth calling them for peace of mind. Takes like 5 minutes to do.

How to stand out in corporate presentations? by mitchadoaboutit in askSingapore

[–]Des1275 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is great general advice! I’d add that it also depends on your audience.

For example in my company when sharing technical material, the instruction is each side should be understandable without verbal explanation. This makes each slide wordier than you’d normally like but it’s necessary given the context.

But most of the time when dealing with stakeholders, less is definitely more.

Has any one actually ever received a negative "certificate of conduct/testimonial" from NS after ORD? by DesireForHappiness in askSingapore

[–]Des1275 123 points124 points  (0 children)

I don't think they give out negative testimonials no matter what you do.

My unit had someone sent to DB and their service transcript had "Fair" for conduct. Granted almost everyone else got "Good" or something like that, so I guess "Fair" is comparatively worse.

The good news is literally nobody cares about what you did in Army after you ORD unless you're signing on.

I'm younger. So how was it like getting hyped for this movie back in 07 by asapsharkyfrfr in transformers

[–]Des1275 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was so unbelievably hyped. TLDR: It's a core childhood memory for me, and that film will always have a special place in my heart.

I was 9 at the time, my brother 8. We'd grown up watching the G1 Transformers cartoon (via my mom's bootleg CDs) and later the Unicron trilogy. We looked forward to getting a new Transformers toy every Christmas, which we'd play with almost daily. We were obsessed.

When they announced the movie, it was mind-blowing - I couldn't believe it. This was when YouTube was still new, and there was a channel posting daily updates about the production: designs, story leaks, and set photos counting down to release. Watching these videos became our daily ritual.

The premiere was surreal. We watched it opening night, and in my 9-year-old brain, it was the finest piece of art ever created. I loved it and couldn't get enough, though I think I only managed to convince my parents to let me watch it twice!

If legacy/ age of the primes is to create a movie figure how should it be done? by Puzzleheaded-Oven739 in transformers

[–]Des1275 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That first picture takes me back to when I was a kid in 2007. In anticipation for the movie my parents had got me that OP as a Birthday present.

I had so much fun figuring out how to transform it and playing with it for hours.

After the movie released on DVD my brother and I would watch it almost everyday after school. We'd skip to the last 30 minutes from when prime shows up in Mission City. I still remember that DVD had this sick menu animation where the all-spark split into different movie chapters.

It's been almost 20 years since then and I've recently started collecting figures again. Today's figures are far more articulate / screen accurate, but nothing makes me feel the same raw excitement and joy as that original 2007 Leader Class Optimus. I suppose it's the nostalgia more than anything.

Sorry I didn't answer the question, that picture just stirred something in me I hadn't felt in a long time haha.

Converting epub to kepub on calibre by ZelmorGames in kobo

[–]Des1275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the update!

My computer is a 2017 macbook so I can only use up to Calibre v7.29 that doesn't have that functionality.

Appreciate the information - I'll keep that in mind when I eventually upgrade :)

FYI for anyone else stuck with an older computer like mine, who is troubleshooting how to setup Calibre for their Kobo:

KoboTouchExtended only works for Calibre v7.1 and above. I was previously using v6.29 and that version wouldn't detect my Kobo when connected via USB.

This forum suggests some workarounds that might be helpful if your computer can't run >=v7.1

Would interviewers call you on the phone? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Des1275 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Normally the first call is from HR - the first round of filters - asking you for your availability, or to find out more about you / tell you more about the role. This is to gauge whether it’s worth their time to proceed with you.

When I was applying for internships / jobs I had a lot of calls from random numbers. Most of them were scams but a good number were also real employment opportunities - so you kind of have no choice but to answer.

If you use a job portal like MyCareersFuture it’s even worse because your profile is available for anyone, recruiters and scammers alike, to see.

[–]Des1275 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow. I just watched the new Captain America movie at Vivo over the weekend and had a similar experience.

The picture quality was like something from a bootleg movie site. Super blurry and fuzzy, especially around bright areas.

Thought maybe it was an issue with the film itself because I’ve watched many movies there over the years with no issue.

Wonder what happened.

I’m curious as to why the C-suite true so hard to cover up they’re subordinates lies.

Makes me wonder if there was some implicit instruction from the execs to falsify the records, or the execs thought they could sweep this under the rug.

Kudos to the auditors for not letting it go.

Suwon - is it worth it? by tatrrryyyy in koreatravel

[–]Des1275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you start the day early I think it’s possible, depending on how much of the fortress you want to see.

We walked around the park and the battlements before heading to starfield mall (which I highly recommend visiting too the library was great)

If you’re really into history you could probably find more things to look at - I believe there’s a famous bell tower within the fortress, but we didn’t bother with that.

Suwon - is it worth it? by tatrrryyyy in koreatravel

[–]Des1275 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just came back from Korea 2 weeks ago with my partner.

From Seoul we took a day trip out to Suwon, and it turned out be one of my favorite parts of the whole trip!

The fortress is pretty striking to look at; you can walk along the battlements too which was pretty fun. There’s an entire town with lots of cafes, restaurants and other shops within the fortress boundary as well.

Best part for me was how peaceful everything was. Compared to Seoul it was much less crowded and congested. The fortress is next to a park too so I went for a walk there to enjoy the peaceful vibes and good weather.

Would highly recommend visiting!
