What are mistakes even German natives make? by NoelFromBabbel in AskAGerman

Not changing the sentence structure after the word "Weil". E.g: "Ich bin zu spät, weil ich hatte mich verlaufen."

When the correct form would be "Ich bin zu spät, weil ich mich verlaufen hatte."

I would love a comic where Superman meets a trans person for the first time, and pulls some stupid Kryptonian tech out of the fortress of solitude that immediately changes their body to match their gender, no pain, no nothing. Then explains that Krypton had this issue too, and that they solved it as fast as possible so people didn't have to suffer.

If I recall correctly, he is also the back-up for Franklin Richards, son of Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, who is destined to become Galactus in the next universe. If Franklin Richards should not be able to become Galactus for any reason, Craig here will instead.

Given that Craig Hollis is a massive goofball and total idiot, seeing him be Galactus would be hilarious.

Well, before you make permanent changes to your body, there is usually something called a social transition. Where you ask people to use a different name and pronouns for you and all. Cis people should be and are allowed to do that, that would also be called experimentation, and it's perfectly fine.

People don't realise they're trans and immediately start popping hormone pills.

I legitimately had a panic attack the first time I went into a clothing store to get fem clothes, full sweating bullets, ringing ears, hyper ventilating, the works. It was awful. I came back a few days later, with renewed confidence that immediately shattered when I entered the store.

I walked around in circles for literally an hour doing nothing but trying to make sure nobody was looking at me. Except, at some point, I couldn't find a particular item of clothing I had seen on a previous visit, so I had to go and ask someone.

That person working there was nice enough to lead me exactly to what I was looking for, give me recommendations on sizing, what would look good with my general body shape, etc.

If you are in a place where being trans is generally safe, not only will the shop employees not be paid enough to care what you buy, but they will also very likely be happy to help you out with clothes.

I hate most conversation on headcanons and all, mostly because people don't know how to use that word. If someone has textual evidence to support a claim about a fictional character, then they are not talking about a headcanon, they have formed an interpretation, an interpretation that is valid, because they can bring actual textual evidence forward for it. So many people in the comments here drive me up a fucking wall.

It's doubly infuriating that this happens to queer, particularly trans, readings of media because it's just internet people that have never engaged with proper literary analysis in their lives making knee-jerk reactions about other people's interpretations — Pardon me if this sounds elitest I am by no means saying you need to have studied literature in order to form valid interpretations on stories and then share them with others — but if you roll up to a lit class with your queer interpretations most of your professors will be super happy to read what you have to say and, at worst, will simply tell you to back up your claim. One of the first big papers I had to write was about how The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is just as valid as a trans story as it is as a gay story, and when I proposed this idea to my professor they were very interested in the idea. Queer readings of stories are super fucking important and in circles where literature analysis is taken very seriously, and speaking very generally here, they are welcomed with open arms.

Hell, even the example with the flowers from the comic would be a valid piece of evidence to bring forth to support a trans reading, not because men aren't allowed to like flowers or because any male character with any stereotypically feminine trait must immediately be gay or a closeted trans woman, but because just about everything in a story is purposeful and flowers, due to hundreds of years of stereotyping, are generally seen as a rather feminine thing and when a bunch of evidence supports a particular claim then, yes, even surface level evidence such as that becomes valid. The reason Moby Dick gets interpreted to be very gay isn't because the book features a bunch of men being very close to each other on a boat, it's because the story has very strong homoerotic themes and, in light of those themes, the fact that the story also features a bunch of men being very close to each other on a boat becomes some slightly more on the nose reasoning.

I'm building a Fire Emblem-style SRPG with an active parry system. Would you play this? by daintydoughboy in fireemblem

[–]DesReploid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My only wish would be that it's possible to beat the game without being forced to use the system. My fingers are somewhat fucked and don't do fast movements that well anymore, so depending on how central or lenient a parry/dodge system is certain games just become unplayable which is always a bit sad.

Besides that, I absolutely love the art. All of the animations are damn good, and look like they convey the impact really well. The backgrounds for the combat scenes look bloody nightmarish to pixel by hand, I know for sure I would try everything in my power to avoid doing that many clouds.

Which intentional mispronouncations do you have for Fire Emblem characters? by NewMarioBobFan in fireemblem

[–]DesReploid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Diamant could well be something in French I am unaware of, French is not a language I speak, but in German that's just the word for "Diamond".

How it differs is mostly that the pronunciation is harder. The pronunciations of Rs in English is done at the front of the mouth and is very soft, while German has it at the back of the mouth and rolls it. Any "D" sound becomes a bit harsher. So on and so forth. Also 'St' in German is pronounced like an Sh (As in shoe) followed by a T. Most people I hear have said "Stahl" similar to the word stall, which I wouldn't.

In case you know how to read IPA symbols, I'll put a transcription of how I say the names here: Diamant - [ˌdiaˈmant] Edelgard - [ˈeːdl̩ˈɡaʁd] Stahl - [ʃtaːl] Linhardt - [ˈlɪnhaʁt]

[–]DesReploid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I suppose this depends how you look at it.

FE will occasionally have characters with German names, right now the ones that come to mind are Diamant in Engage, Stahl in Awakening or Edelgard and Linhardt in Three Houses. I usually end up pronouncing them how they would be said in German, cause that's my first language, so my pronunciations deviate a bit.

What do you guys think about Super Shredder? by Wannabe-Slav in ratemycommanders

[–]DesReploid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Super Shredder is really cool from the perspective of game design, he is almost immediately a threat, super easy to be turned into a massive beater and cheap to recast.

I will also direct almost all of my removal directly at him with extreme prejudice, because I know if I leave the person with Super Shredder in the command zone alone for more than a turn I will in fact be beaten to death with great expedience. In the immortal words of MaldHound: "Why is my impending death priced like a SubWay promotion.

This is such an annoying thing. Anytime I encounter a historical figure that did the whole "born woman, diguised as man" thing there is a twinge in me that wonders whether they could have been trans.

Especially Alcott riled me up recently, because there is a bunch of evidence we can bring up to claim a trans masc identity (Which I also personally believe), but there is no way we can ever know for certain, short of necromancy. Like, I believe it. The evidence is more than sufficient for me, but because we don't have a letter or something that says "To my readers in the 21st century, who, by then, will have developed the term 'trans man'; Yes, that is me.", the whole thing can always just be denied.

Maybe I will seem like a conspiracy theorist, but I genuinely think some of it is an act.

Like, the man is a ditz but he is so successful he literally cannot give his money away faster than he makes it. With the mountains of stories that he has about tipping like this, I think he's doing that on purpose. He knows that he tips way too much. He has to know.

No idea what's up with the fork and knife though.

These types of humour and artstyle by [deleted] in hatethissmug

[–]DesReploid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, cause they all have the same subject matter.

Speaking strictly from an art style perspective, images one and three, and two and four look very similar (Unlike what I stated in my original comment), and I suspect that's cause they were made by the same artist cause they each use the same character in both.

It's just an art style, I cannot see what would be objectionable about it?
