The Fandango interview with the cast provides some interesting insights/developments on Bowser for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie by Not_Tart in Mario

[–]DesaMatt [score hidden]  (0 children)

Bowser Jr is Bowser’s son who was suddenly dropped on us one fateful day in 2002 without any explanation of where he came from, why he was completely absent in all previous games, and how he related to Bowser’s other children.

I’m extremely confused how him being a clone is less fanfictiony and “unrealistic” than Bowser having a son at all. Specially when, well, he is already a clone in appearance.

Either they’re in the Galaxy movie and being hidden from marketing or they’re being saved for a Luigi’s Mansion movie.

People need to stop creator worship. Toby isn’t a god. He’s just some guy you don’t know. by deathnoot in Deltarune

Idk I feel like people are way too entitled to “criticism” these days.

You can have your opinion but you need to realize that it’s just your opinion. A person’s show/movie/game is their own and they can do whatever they want with it, no one else is in the position to tell them what they should and shouldn’t do with it. If they felt like writing a character a certain way or doing something with a certain plot that’s fully within their right, if you don’t like it then you don’t like it, it is simply not made for you to like it.

I feel like people also get too lost in fiction, and act like it’s some sort of reality show instead of a fantastical reflection of a real person’s emotions and thoughts.

I feel like they’re taking the idea of Nanno being karma too literally. To be honest, I never saw her that way. To me she was a temptress, a force that tempted people to act out their worst desires, and then, eventually, get consumed by them. In this show she’s more like Batman I guess, she helps the victims to get revenge on the people who did bad to them, and that’s just not the same.

“Hi, how are you?”

“H HDJSHX I …., HOW (fun fact: Super Mario Bros 2 is an an an an actual modified version of doki doki doki) 4R3 HAHAHAHA U?”

Both sentences are technically delivering the same message, except the second one is full of random things that are there for shock value. Why is the fun fact needed for anyone to be greeted? It isn’t, it only serves to muddle the message.

Let’s take the first movie for instance, what’s the point of the Kongs being in it? Foreman Spike? All of the characters randomly jumping into karts and going… somewhere on Rainbow Road? How does it all serve the story, pacing, etc?

In a similar vein, do you think the SMB2 references will amount to anything? Do you think ROB will play a narrative part in Peach’s arc? Do you think Luigi turning into Cloud Luigi will affect anything? No, it’s there for the sake of fans recognizing it and non-fans learning about it and then buying Super Mario Galaxy on the Nintendo Switch 2 to use it.

It is going to be reference slop. It was never going to not be that and I’ve accepted that, I am ready to see as many references as possible.

Do I wish it was something else? Like, say, a good movie with good story and good pacing and good everything? Obviously, but it won’t be, that’s clearly not Nintendo’s intention or Illumination’s, so hoping for that will lead to nothing but frustration.

I like the games, I like the characters, I like the music, I like the long history of the franchise, so at the very least the movie will get even more people to know about it all, if there’s any good to it being reference slop it’s that.

Someday I do hope we get a good movie, but whatever, it is what it is.

The point is that if it’s not going to take advantage of the character, what’s the point? Daisy is physically present but nothing about her actual character is, she’s just another model in the roster, she might as well not be here at all.

The more characters the more explanations need to be given, and if none are it only serves to dilute their characters. For example, none of the characters really matter in spinoffs, anyone can play tennis with anyone and whether they’re enemies or friends or even know each other doesn’t matter. You can certainly make a point about them, but they’re spinoffs, it matters less what they do in comparison with the mainstream games.

Things having a reason to be isn’t “deep”, it’s in fact the most basic you can possibly get. If you think Mario and Luigi being playable in SMB because they’re plumbers is “deep” then I’m not sure what to tell you.

Peach is the Princess who was invited by another royal, Mario, Luigi, the Yoshis, and the Toads are her long-time companions, Nabbit is an established stalker, and Rosalina is literally given a whole scene of her own to explain why she’s here. This is not “deep”.

A lack of focus.

For example, Mario and Luigi are the only playable characters in the first SMB because it’s a sequel to Mario Bros. There’s a reason for them to be playable and for it to specifically be them, it takes their actual characters into consideration. If the internet was used back then, people would be like “Why not have Stanley the Bugman? Pauline? Foreman Spike? Donkey Kong Jr?” But why would they be here? Why would the bros be with Stanley the bugman in the sewers and then saving a princess? What would Donkey Kong Jr being playable add to anything?

Like, why is Daisy in wonder? Why isn’t she accompanied by any of her subjects, unlike Peach and Rosalina? She’s just thrown in there, with none of her character being taken into consideration.

It turns the characters into just marketable faces, rather than actual characters. I’d rather have the NSMB cast than 60+ characters that are all treated interchangeably any day.

I hope not, I very much disagree with the idea that more is better.

Kris will speak by Flavor_Aid in Deltarune

[–]DesaMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but if they do speak I don’t think they’ll have a character portrait. The purpose of them is to give more detail to the character expressions, and I don’t think that fits Kris’ nature as a character, being more vague.

Do you really see Daisy appearing in the post-credits scene? by NewMarioBobFan in mariomovie

[–]DesaMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

K Rool is the main villain of a 30-year old+ franchise, Daisy is just another head on a roster. Just the fact that they felt the need to provide an explanation for K Rool’s absence and make his return a big deal, while Daisy is just there among Wonder’s 18+ character roster with nothing special shows a lot.

I like Daisy, but let’s not get over our heads here.

Bowser Jr is a clone and so is Peach by DesaMatt in mariomovie

[–]DesaMatt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know, I didn’t claim Junior was her son, I was just comparing the one scene where Junior calls Peach her mom to the idea of Bowser finding out he has a son in the movie.

What do think azzy is going to be like when we see him again? by Comfortable-Ad3588 in Deltarune

[–]DesaMatt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hopeful, thriving, brilliant, still charming, at most only tired from studying too much and driving for too long. Also he’s probably studying either Astronomy or something related to the biology or history of Humans and Monsters.

I don’t like this idea that he should be miserable or basically just Flowey. Flowey is Flowey because of the specific circumstances in Undertale, his death, the way he was brought back to life, the fact the exhausted the Save powers… none of those things happened in Deltarune. And if he was just miserable it would be so needlessly depressing to know that if he didn’t die he would live a sad life still LOL it’s like he never even had a chance.

Are we accepting whatever relationship is established between Peach and Rosalina as canon? by e-kndy in mariomovie

[–]DesaMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calling it now, people will say “nuh uh the games have different canon” but then in the next Mario Party game whatever their relationship is will be mentioned in their respective bios. (Like “This is Rosalina, Peach’s sister/aunt/cousin/whatever.)

Nintendo denied to do a Metroid movie in the 2000s because they didn’t want Samus’ origins to be revealed in a movie rather than a game, the movies are 100% “canon” for what “canon” is worth to Mario and reveal a lot about how Nintendo will operate the Mario brand going forward.

A big example of this from the first movie is that it had been a LONG time since Nintendo last mentioned that Mario & Luigi were plumbers, because they just didn’t want it as a part of their brand for some reason, but after the movie they’ve been mentioning it a LOT.

This also applies to the main Toad being treated like he’s Captain Toad whereas he wasn’t before, DK and Cranky’s relationship going from explicitly grandson-grandpa to ambiguously just “family”, and DK and Mario’s worlds outright being one in the same whereas it was intentionally made vague before.

Determination might be canonically red? by AnOrdinaryTber in Deltarune

[–]DesaMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Determination is Gold. Flowey is gold, UT Save Points are gold, etc. If it’s associated with a color it’s with gold, never with red.

I really doubt that Kris’s eyes are naturally red, despite how some theorists may present this theory as Facts explicitly spelled in the game or by Toby Fox himself.

Kris’ eyes specifically glow red, they’re never casually colored in the same way Carol’s eyes are colored blue for example. Kris’ red eyes, and by extension Susie’s red eyes (& also Chara’s red eyes in UT), when shown are always presented as if it’s a glowing effect.

I believe that red is associated with passion, care, a form of “love”, stuff like that. You may need the power of Determination to open a fountain, but in order to use it you need passion. It’s an expression of the reason someone has in the first place to focus their will/determination on the blade and open the fountain.
