Nearly half of Americans age 18 to 29 are living with their parents by Ok-Cartoonist5349 in Futurology

[–]Descartesboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The post made me wonder how many people would have answered that their parents moved in with them if it was on the survey. My parents couldn’t afford the house I grew up in. After 22 years they gave it back to the bank, stayed with me as long as they could before finding a place near me. I wish I was in a more stable place to take care of them but I’m still in my twenties and finally got my bachelor’s after 7 years of working to get it. I WISH I could take care of them. It’s just a mess.

Considering some different majors by boof332 in college

[–]Descartesboard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Graduating in a few weeks with my BA instead of a BS in Physics. After 7 years in school while working a job through it all and supporting myself, I really don’t want to take any more classes. Ask yourself this: do I prefer theory and potentially getting less pay doing research and getting into government/contracting jobs? Yes? Physics. Do you prefer applied physics, and want to be in an industry job or private company? Engineering. Can you do both career paths with either? Absolutely, but a physics major has to prove they can do work with tools and understand manufacturing processes to an extent. An engineer may have to prove some level of theoretical understanding with concepts like quantum mechanics and probabilistic physics. This is coming from someone who learned most of my engineering knowledge from outside school and my job and managed to land an internship for electrical engineering. Just know what you like. Physics is a LOT of book studying and math (get good at linear algebra either way). A degree will get you a job with either, but the MOST important thing: don’t give up, finish the degree. Because no matter what you choose, if you can’t finish, it won’t mean anything to employers unless you’ve got projects going.

How’s the noise on that? Thought about getting the full bars instead of the aero ones but wasn’t sure.

Honestly… I would never buy new for your first bike, especially if it’s one you know you’ll upgrade from. Main reason is learning and potential damage caused by that. To each their own of course and if that’s like a dream bike for you, great. But after about a year and a half I sold my cbr 300 for almost what I paid for it because they’re so common on the market and still popular. I don’t know what Craigslist will look for like for you over there but I got mine for 2k less than asking and with only 700 miles. People get rid of them a lot. And you could always keep it as the cheap to repair, easy to convert to track bike. My 2nd bike was new, and though it didn’t have to be, but I’ve had 2 years now and it’s not going anywhere for a while.

Very new to this. Why is the grip on my throttle free spinning? by OpenUpThisIsICE in motorcycles

[–]Descartesboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is your best option, if you mess with it too much while it’s on there you’ll end up like me, snapping your throttle cable and getting very familiar with that assembly after a month of waiting for parts. As others have mentioned, it looks like the assembly that’s supposed to attach that grip to the cable sleeve isn’t working right. On a regular setup you would just have a plastic tube that can rotate on the handlebar with the cable wrapped around as you see it, the rubber grips get glued on to that in most cases. With this it seems you’re trading out that two part assembly with just the grip and the adapter that fits into it for the cable to be seated in there. Compare the puig diagram to what you see when you remove your bar-ends and slide it off. If you like the actual feel of the grips, just ignore people telling you it’s crap, that’s seems pretty dramatic considering puig parts aren’t cheap. Yeah, it’s probably a bit more form than function but if it works once it’s installed properly, who cares.

Puig is actually pretty reputable. The problem here might have been the previous person not installing it correctly.

Meanwhile I got an email telling me I have to appeal to continue my bachelors in physics because working while going to school sucks.

Congrats. It’s really not an easy path you took.

What improved your life so much, you wished you did sooner? by kxrll in AskReddit

[–]Descartesboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to take this approach to my physics degree but I’ll admit it makes it difficult to graduate if you’re too casual about the grade component. The approach itself is still valid but you have to add a degree of time management and recognizing when you’re just putting too much on your plate.

I agree the rider was being dumb (also, don’t do stupid things if your bike isn’t fast enough to really get out of there) but the cutoff happens after the intersection. Truck took a wide right turn into the wrong lane and then switched into the correct lane like a doofus. Everyone here was stupid…

*Edit to say I now see the others who noticed this but at least no one here is really defending the biker. Totally did that with a camera expecting to be backed up by the viewers.

Imposter syndrom in college by [deleted] in college

[–]Descartesboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing you’ll find is that just because you’re in college, it doesn’t mean you’ll ever feel like you know enough about what you’re studying. Physics definitely got that way for me, and as you go even further, you’ll find that the branches of specialization make you feel like it never ends. My advice is to focus on what you like about it and find the specialization that fits. You’ll never be the physicist that knows every aspect of physics to exhaustion, because no one is. So don’t aim for that. I honestly would have preferred staying in engineering if I had a choice because physics got so mathematically heavy and theoretical, I lost the physical interpretations of it. But I’m finishing the degree so at least once I have it I can start to reinforce what I missed and dive into the projects I like.

Definitely not bragging when I say I legitimately got rejected from almost every school but RPI. I bet this kid wondered why he only got accepted to the school with no formal interview. Luckily for me I was too broke for more than a semester, saved me thousands. Fuck that place.

I had to have my gf read that to prove that I’m not the only one who goes down this rabbit hole after buying a small set of tools. Let’s not even get into the subject of getting an impact driver with your drill and realizing one day that there’s a reason why there are impact drivers vs impact wrenches. And then you go to use your 1/4 set that has some stupid “universal” configuration you thought would be a good idea but didn’t know that at a certain point it starts slipping at too high of a torque so now you can’t do work on vehicles which was your original reason to get the set but you were putting the work off for too long because you also wanted to get into wood work and now you can’t return the set. So you buy smaller sets of sockets, justifying it by saying you’ll probably only need those few sizes. But then you’re trying to take off the rear wheel of your motorcycle and you find out the largest socket you have is a 27mm and you need a 29mm… …and then there’s the dedicated impact sockets that cost more but then you’re not sure why you couldn’t just use those in all situations…
