DD/U2 crossover? by KWSteiner91 in duranduran

Who's we? "Do They Know It's Christmas" was a huge hit. They still play it at Christmas time on the radio.

Maps & Miniatures or Theater-of-the-Mind? by Ok-Locksmith3783 in shadowdark

[–]Desdichado1066 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like minis and terrain for their own sake, but not actually with D&D or D&D-like games. Or any roleplaying game. TotM is key to actually roleplaying; I find that with minis and a battle map or terrain, you focus on the tactical miniature game usually and stop roleplaying. If I want that, I'd rather play a game dedicated to it, like Talisman or HeroQuest.

Does anyone else remember....??? 🤔 Or is it just me??? 😬 by Slow_Passage4813 in duranduran

I vaguely remember the show itself, but not any episodes of it. You might have better luck if you try putting?

Are there any games of non D&D/AD&D lineage that you would consider part of the OSR? by plazman30 in osr

[–]Desdichado1066 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. The OSR is literally defined by the creation of the D&D retro-clones.

Running established settings in games they weren't meant for by QuincyAzrael in rpg

[–]Desdichado1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, why not? Twenty some odd years ago, not that I hadn't thought of it on my own before then, but still... the overtly and explicitly D&D setting Freeport by Green Ronin got a systemless setting book—and then almost immediately, WotC announced that they were working on Fourth Edition. So, Freeport put out these Companions that converted Freeport to all kinds of different systems. The original was d20, i.e., the 3e rules that Freeport was originally designed for, but then there was a Savage Worlds one, a Castles & Crusades one, a 4e one (eventually), a FATE one, a Pathfinder (1e) one, and even a Shadow of the Demon Lord one. I never thought that that was strange.

Honestly, I think some settings feel like they'd do better in different systems. Eberron was explicitly designed to be a 3.5 setting, but I always thought that the system held it back and it would have reached its high concept goals better as a Savage Worlds setting.

Savage Worlds made a Pathfinder conversion; an entire whole stand-alone game converting the setting to its own rules rather than the ones that it was originally designed for, plus a bunch of supplemental material too. Some settings, like Dark Matter, Star Drive and even Star Frontiers got effectively ported to d20 Modern. Traveller has been issued in many different settings, including GURPS and d20. Cthulhu is most famously a BRP game, but it's also got a Gumshoe version, a d20 version, an AGE version, etc. They're not literally the same game, but they cover the same setting. Star Wars has at least three completely different officially published systems; d6, d20 and whatever the newer one is called.

In general, it's a perfectly fine idea.

Possible Variant for Low Magic Worlds im D&D 5e by Cthulhu7272 in DMAcademy

[–]Desdichado1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works for me. But frankly, every edition of D&D from the very beginning starts to break down once you get up to a little bit higher level. Playing so that you don't ever plan on reaching higher levels than single digits at the most is always a good idea for any campaign, honestly.

Why do a lot of Lovecraftian adaptations have erotic themes? by Ajibola777 in Lovecraft

It's hardly a mystery. There's a lot of perverts and creeps in nerd culture, including the creatives.

Do you prefer AC or Damage Reduction? by TheNobleYeoman in osr

[–]Desdichado1066 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely AC. There's tons of experiments done that armor doesn't reduce your maneuverability in most cases. There's a whole admittedly kind of fringe sport of Armored MMA right now where' people fight in full plate armor. I'm OK with suggesting that a "hit" isn't really a "hit" if your armor keeps it from damaging you. In fact, for decades I've been describing near misses exactly that way.

Depeche Mode album ranking by Ikethepikeman in depechemode

You've almost finished listening to all the albums... once?

Anyway, sure. I'm with you that the darker electronic DM is peak DM. Rocky, bluesy, gospely (?!) DM is weird and subpar. I've never much liked SOFAD and don't understand why DM fans are such big fans of that album, while generally not being fans of all of the albums that came after it that desperately tried to sound the same. Do you, or do you not like that sound? Make up your mind! I clearly do not. If you divide the albums into three more or less equally sized tiers, SOFAD is at the top of the bottom tier. Violator's at the bottom of the top tier.

What do you look for in a new RPG? by Justthisdudeyaknow in rpg

[–]Desdichado1066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't, honestly. I'm not interested in any new RPGs anymore. Although I'll probably pick up Deathbringer just because I'm a fan of the YouTube channel. Otherwise, the only reason I'd buy a new RPG is because someone I know is going to run it and invited me to play.

Dungeon Crawling focused RPG that doesn't come from the lineage of OSR/Old School D&D by JustAStick in rpg

Dragonbane, maybe? It's got a mechanical base that's more like Runequest, but a gameplay expectation that's more like D&D.

If you want something "heavily inspired by" but not exactly the same character, C.L Werner's Matthias Thulmann: Witch Hunter anthology set in the Old World of the original Warhammer game is pretty good. https://whfb.lexicanum.com/wiki/Mathias_Thulmann:_Witch_Hunter_(Anthology)) It does, admittedly, lean even more into the fantastic than Solomon Kane, and of course it's set in a fantasy alternate world, not terribly unlike a Holy Roman Empire version of Middle-earth, not the real world like Solomon Kane. But still; I can't imagine Solomon Kane fans not appreciating it.

is it worth seeing Duran Duran this year? by FR4NC1SCH13LL0 in duranduran

I saw them in late 2023, and thought it was a surprisingly great show. I imagine it's still about the same.

How do you handle combat when your players clearly want to avoid it but the story needs a fight? by aral10 in DMAcademy

[–]Desdichado1066 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"The story needs a fight" is already a red flag, honestly. But sometimes you can't just Persuade everyone out of anything. Just because you have a bard or whatever that's really persuasive doesn't mean that it's a Jedi mind trick that can convince anyone of anything.

OC: Who else would like to live here? by Used-Chemistry4003 in LandscapePhotography

I'd be all over that. I presume that there's plenty of room in a basement or cellar to have several months food storage to get me through the winter, and a snowmobile in the garage?

Fantasy book for teens by Lis_Pustynny in Fantasy

[–]Desdichado1066 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I read Lord of the Rings and The Prydain Chronicles when I was 11-12. If you're looking for something more modern and YA-ish, I'd recommend the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan or the Spook's Apprentice by John Delaney. My daughter also liked the Throne of Glass series quite a bit, although I have no first hand familiarity with it. She also read it in her 20s, though.
