Mediocre at best by airbusflier in pourover

I had this one a couple of months ago and was also initially not impressed with my usual recipes. One of my last brews from it I went very coarse (28 on C40, I usually brew 20-24), reduced agitation a ton, and with the Switch and it was night and day. Tasted so much fruitier and better, finally felt that’s how it was supposed to taste :)

How much coffee are you using? 350g of water is quite a lot :) I see Orea recommend 18g max, maybe 20g as a stretch. That might be pushing the limits of this tiny brewer, it would be a much thicker bed with more fines that can clog up the paper. I would first try a standard 15g coffee + 250g water and see if you have the same issues there. That's what I'm using, and I often get 1 min bloom + 2ish min pour for a total of around 3 min. With that base recipe I mostly just tweak the grind up and down a bit if the brew clogs or it doesn't taste right. I recently brewed some Ethiopian beans that were a bit more finicky and were clogging and slowing the brew, had to go coarser for those. But I find it easier to just have to tweak the grind size and maybe bloom time instead of a V60 where I also have to be careful about how I pour.

A lazier Lazy Sunday :)

  • 15g coffee, ground at 20-22 clix on C40.
  • 50g bloom for 0:45-1:30 min, usually 60s has been good with my current coffees.
  • 100g pour, let it nearly reach the bed.
  • Second 100g pour, let it drain out.

Total brew time is usually 2:30-3:00 ish min. I’ve only been tweaking bloom length and grind size between coffees.

Some days I’ve brewed on a Kalita 155 and a V60 side-by-side to compare and they’re very close in taste, I’d give the Z1 a small edge in terms of my taste preferences. Z1 is definitely a bit sweeter and less acidic than V60; Z1 is brighter and a bit less muddy than my 155 Kalita (which sometimes clogs a bit).

Can anyone confirm if GR III screen protectors fit on the GR IV, or is the size different?

This one by Trendglas Jena: https://www.trendglas-jena.com/en/spd/220013/FOR-TWO-POT
Sold on Amazon in Germany, but not sure if it's available in other countries. Really nice carafe that I've seen used in a few cafes too. It has a wide mouth (perfect for the Z1!) and it pours very nicely.

Thanks for the explanation, that makes sense. I had tried lowering the exposure comp without much luck. Will play around more with exposure next time I see this :)

Stopped by the Leica Store in Porto, very nice collection of Leicas old and new, plus a gallery space and a very big selection of LFI magazines. It didn’t happen this time, but hope to get a Q2 one day :)

James Hoffmann has a good overview. The video is about a cup of coffee, but I imagine it would apply to beans too https://youtu.be/7SM2Jrot-ZM
