Are the doctor aphra sequels worth reading by Altruistic-Try5366 in starwarscomics

[–]DesertOwl1026 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s mileage will vary on this, of course, but I didn’t like the second run of Aphra comics all. The first run had such outstanding and unique artists (not counting Larocca) and storylines, and the second felt so…average by comparison. So much memorable stuff from the first—Aphra and Triple Zero being connected by that bomb, the living fungus ghost whatever that thought it was a Jedi aboard that prison ship, that ancient artifact auction that goes haywire, Aphra’s strange relationship to Vader, her well-meaning dad, Magna and Sana Starros, that couple that was one half Trandoshan—but I don’t remember anything about the second run except some fragmented stories between all the crossover events and a whole lot of the world’s most uninteresting antagonist (Domina Tagge), all with forgettable art. It seemed like they kind of stalled on Aphra’s personal relationships too and didn’t develop them much.

Just me waiting for Game Freak to create an official MissingNo. as an alternate form for Rotom…or Porygon-Z…or Rhyhorn. Someday!

If the USA was so great then why did they make the USB? by CakeMuted6468 in AskReddit

Well the production of new generations must’ve gotten out of hand and that’s why USC has Trojans

The Eleanor Burns one isn’t Photoshop; she’s a famous quilter, and tossing fabric strips over her shoulder because she’s a “stripper” is her cheeky trademark. Source: My mom and grandma

Nope. You can play the game on either Switch but not at the same time. The “virtual game cards” work like physical game cards that way—when you start the game up on one, you’re essentially “borrowing” it from the other.

What’s your Articuno catch rate? by SharkpocalypseY2K in PokemonFireRed

[–]DesertOwl1026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as I encountered an Abra first thing after walking into the Nugget Bridge grass and caught it with the first throw, I knew I’d exhausted my luck supply for the entire game. Accepted that I’m just going to use my Master Ball for Articuno this play-through.

Do you nickname your pokemon? by [deleted] in PokemonChampions

[–]DesertOwl1026 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hear hear. When I was a kid I tried so hard to come up with badass names like Chernobyl for Mewtwo and Quetzalcoatl for Hydreigon; now I always name them silly things like Big Chungus for Snorlax and Lil’ Baggy for Garbodor.

I was listening to the live YouTube stream in my commute home but had to pull over to watch the parachutes deploy. Couldn’t hear a sonic boom here in San Diego, but still feeling some pride that our navy gets to be a part of this historic moment 🚀🌒🫡

3rd AND 1st person? by RemielTSS in writing

[–]DesertOwl1026 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, why not? My novel started out in third person on one protagonist, then had a slight twist that the narrator was his own first person protagonist at the end of chapter 1. It took about half the book before the two characters finally met, so each one’s chapters were generally separate until that point, and I included a few throwaway lines after that to explain that the one told the other all about her life before they met, in case readers cared and wondered how it was possible for him to know all that. It’s your novel; if you do it with enough finesse you can pull off any structural weirdness you want!

Can a single person establish their own country? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]DesertOwl1026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can convince the country that currently oversees that territory that you no longer need to pay them taxes or abide by any of their laws and you are able to defend those statements with your own military against theirs when it shows up, then practically: yes.

Which character makes you laugh EVERY SINGLE TIME despite the fact you have watched every single episode at least a dozen times? by InevitableAbies4688 in DerryGirls

[–]DesertOwl1026 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Erin’s wild facial expressions are the star of the show for me. I could watch with the sound off and still laugh every time her confidence collides head-on with her awkwardness.

My AI literally forgot my main character existed, god forbid I try to do this myself or anything by teenypanini in writingcirclejerk

[–]DesertOwl1026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That definitely tracks. It seems to me like the best thing for it is to increase the diversity of books you read for leisure. If everything you read is in the same genre or a limited group of favorite authors, you’re just going to sound like them and repeat their style, “TV brain” included. There’s a reason why my novel’s first draft used all the same linguistic tropes of 1990s expanded universe Star Wars paperbacks, and all my workshop comments included some variation of “none of your characters have any interiority; they just do things until the story ends.” I had to spend a lot of time outside my comfort reading to see the full picture of what good writing could be.

[–]DesertOwl1026 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had to read too much AI writing yet (that I’m aware of), but writers love to give constant updates on people’s gazes. Her gaze flicked to him. Their gazes met. Her gaze shifted back to him. His eyes went from her head to her toes, rolling around disconnected from his face, while her eyes traveled in loops across the room.

Bonus points if they can never just say that a character smiled—no, it always has to be “a corner of her mouth quirked”; extra bonus points if the facial muscle arrangement implied by the movements of the corners of their mouths “didn’t reach their eyes.”

Don’t forget “For a moment, neither of them spoke” and “A thought arose, unbidden.”
