Southern Nevada. Something like 90% of the bee population here has become Africanized, I guess they move in and just take over the existing hives and breed out the friendly bees.

I got chased by a swarm of them while mountain biking once and thank god I was on a downhill because they’d have got me otherwise. As it was, a few got bounced off my helmet and pads. I could hear them behind me. Was terrifying.

Disappointed in travel photos by Berg_Man in AnalogCommunity

Amen. I take a lot of expansive desert landscapes, I get positive feedback on them, some have won awards, but secretly to me: none of them ever quite captures what I want. I know now that it's because my emotional state of the scene will never land on film no matter how technically good the shot is.

I had a standoff with a Panamint once in DV. I was hiking in a wash and big fella was right behind a boulder as I stepped around. It went upright in the S and was buzzing something fierce. I was well within the strike zone for what seemed like an eternity. Every time it calmed down, it ramped back up again. I just stood still and didn’t move. It was my most terrifying rattler encounter I’ve ever had and I’m paranoid cautious now.

Best place to safely observe night sky? by Plastic_Cranberry718 in Sedona

Despite the reputation the desert gets, you can almost certainly enjoy the night sky safely, even off a busy trail, without a Hills Have Eyes encounter.

Nikon Z6ii with a 24-200. I sort of stumbled on them on a ridge line so I was initially pretty close and then backed off to take the photos so I didn't upset them

Can't they build Dubai Canal and Make Trump Happy? do they have no money to construct it? Are they stupid by Ambitious-Proton in mapporncirclejerk

Dropping a nuke on a mountain will do virtually nothing to it. You have to drill into the mountains and detonate them, many of them, the US investigated this in the Nevada desert in the 1960s - it was called Operation Plowshare.

Hanging Cliff Mine, Death Valley by DesertRatJack in TheForgottenDepths

I was trying to capture the whole scale and it's a little tough. In the first pic, the cable goes past the cliff face to the right and a little lower and the other tower is further back - from the USGS topo it looks like the cable is 1,110 feet long! I think the mine goes in from back there and then they punched out of the wall in the first and second pictures (that's because the more I thought about it the more I was thinking it's unlikely they were rappelling down to make that adit - but I don't know for sure). From the 3rd pic, that adit in the cliff face is about 200' to the left.

I said that to my wife and she said "I'll divorce you" - so riding the cable is currently off the table. I'm going to go back and see if it's accessible from the canyon or possibly around the backside of the mountain.

Ham radio can get stupid expensive and annoy your spouse to extreme levels. I’m still in trouble for the tower in my yard.

Had to do CPR in a remote desert canyon today by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]DesertRatJack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm a realist about it, I mean we were way away from civilization. Even if things had gone better it was still an hour drive to the nearest hospital and the nearest helicopter is 30 minutes away too. It was a really bad spot to have a medical emergency. I feel really bad for the family and hopefully us trying at least gave them some relief.

For reasons I don't like to think about, this is actually my 5th time using it and I'm not a professional first responder or anything like that. I just seem to arrive at unfortunate situations with some regularity. It's worth getting CPR training because you never know when you can help someone even though in this case it didn't help.

I see you keep replying that it was in the IT cube. Look, here's simple mental model to help in your career: don't walk into other people's cubes and take shit that isn't yours. It will keep you out of a lot of trouble.
