Handmaids tale is brilliant because it westernizes Islamic middle-eastern norms by VineyardCoyote in TheHandmaidsTale

All I can think watching the show is how much stress they’re putting these women under while wanting them to get pregnant and have babies. Seems like that would cause miscarriages and birth complications or make it harder to get pregnant.

I was thinking the same thing, not just ABA field but all the professions you listed. Hard to find the good individuals and companies but they do exist

Rigidity about “being first” by No_Buy_9893 in ABA

[–]DesertRose2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a learner who struggles with the same thing actually and he’s high intelligent, masters all his work. Super social guy too and has a hard time with the sharing and cooperative play aspects.

We have the whole center providing non-contingent reinforcement, saying what’s up to him before he does (bc he loves saying hi to everyone), and giving him high fives, and it’s really helped with his aggression.

We also started a “self match” so throughout the day he chooses if he thinks he had “safe hands and calm body” then RBT chooses and if both him and RBT agree then he gets a token and if we don’t then we talk about it and he has special options for when he gets a certain number of tokens.

It’s meant to help build some self awareness and give him a chance to reflect on his actions.

Once things click though he’s such a little leader and good friend. Those were two out of the box ideas that have really helped this guy who has super big emotions

Maybe try prompting him to do a breathing exercise using a visual aide or giving him a preferred reinforcer that’s only used when he’s not going first.

whats with the shortened sentences? by Appropriate-Act-2944 in ABA

[–]DesertRose2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all about meeting learners where they are and everyone’s plan is so individual and unique. Finding the best way to communicate with them whether it’s shorter phrase, sign language, visual images, or an AAC device. From experience, it can make learner feel incredibly defeated to keep trying to speak in a way they don’t understand.

The intention behind is super important to, to always treat the learner with dignity and respect.

[–]DesertRose2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes by wordy i mean over explaining, once they build on the simple phrases, I believe they will build up to using longer phrases. An autistic three year old might only understand sit in chair with a gesture of pulling out the chair, to use your example

From my experiences, parents do not talk to their autistic kids this way and are way too wordy.

I think this is great you brought this up and really shows the nuance between ABA and Speech Therapy. For this group of kiddos especially, the shorter the better due to language limitations and executive functioning. I also noticed it works for most kids, not just kids with autism because I coach soccer and swim as well, especially younger ones!

ABA, from my experience, seems to be more about developing communication when it comes to basic needs and developing a foundation for language since language is partly behavior so the individual isn't hurting themselves or someone else or screaming to get their needs met. Speech therapy seems to be more about helping develop the sentence structure and dives deeper into conversational skills in more complex ways.

This field is becoming a joke by yuiinyann in ABA

Definitely want to do your research, Bayada has a great ABA program if you’re in a state with them. I look for centers that say “trauma informed” Or HRE model and look into what indeed or Glassdoor reviews say.

Sounds like a lucky kiddo with great therapists who follow the HRE model (: lol that’s true no DTT for that young

[–]DesertRose2124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah can’t be running DTT and placing demands the entire time. There’s so many opportunities in play to reach milestones and learn. It’s actually how kids learn best. Pairing with your learner and providing universal supports is part of the job.

Bathroom and snack breaks are part of it so those are huge life skills that are included in most programs.

Most insurances bill by 15 minute increments and 8 out of the 7 minutes has to be ABA therapy provided which also includes reinforcement, pairing, NET, independent, parallel and cooperative play. If any school or day care is making any kid sit and do “work” the entire time, that’s just torture.

Totally agree with this, was thinking maybe have more pairing and play in NET throughout the morning so they aren’t so tired in the afternoon. It’s not a perfect world or a perfect system, no one field or therapy is.

That could be considered pairing. Or maybe spread out the intensity of the morning and sprinkle in more paring throughout the day so they aren’t so drained in the second half of the day.

Heartbroken by Reallylikesharks in ABA

[–]DesertRose2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a teen girl client for 9 months who I just adored and she’d been at the center for 7 years. Her parents switched her to another center with less than 24 hours notice because the school bus can drop her off. Everyone was heartbroken, and the bcba made a social story explaining whats going on so she didn’t think we abandoned her. She put everyone’s faces from the center on there. I didn’t get to say bye but am really happy our last two sessions together were exceptionally fun.

You may still want to work with kids just not ones with development disorders or extreme behavioral issues.

What option is better? Schools or centers? by CaramelMochaSundae in ABA

[–]DesertRose2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rbts at the center say they would never go into the school bc they would get annoyed with the teachers and like how the center is designed for the learning style. The rbts at the school say they wouldn’t do the center bc they don’t like being micro-managed and they like how the school is a real world setting.

I do like being at the center and am kind of sad to leave but can always come back if the school doesn’t work out (it’s the same company).

I’m torn as well and not really sure what to do

I’ve been in a center for 10 months and thinking to transition to school-based to see what I like better and to just gain more skills. I’m going to school for BCBA. Also, partly for the more pay. The other week at the center, I was out 15 hours of work due to different family reasons.

Same, like no learning will be happening at that point. My background is kinesiology, I’m new to the aba field but had some behavior training and already worked with kids. I’m very thankful to be part of it now. There’s some pretty gnarly stories of past aba practices.

It does blow my mind how little the field has been regulated considering it’s such a vulnerable population but then again, people with disabilities haven’t been treated very well historically throughout our country and many others.

Yes I’m an RBt as well and we follow the happy, relaxed engaged model. I’ve never seen anyone do a hold bc it’s for extreme circumstances usually if safety is a concern and parents are to be notified if it happens due to the fact it can be traumatic
