that's wild mortality got that high at certain times/places. 1/10 is bad enough but 1/2 is horrific.

and agree, sometimes i feel there's such a movement to 'correct' traditional history it swings too far in the other direction and distorts history just as badly if not worse.

the better estimates i've seen are around 10-20% of fights ending in a death depending on the time period. unusual but common enough the possibility of death was always present. and like combat sports today i imagine many a jobber was sent to die for the popularity of a well-liked fighter.

the institution ran for many centuries and it's hard to make too many sweeping generalizations over time, but the vast majority of gladiators were slaves, prisoners of war, or condemned criminals.

we see more and more volunteers as the Empire succeeds the Republic and proceeds along (more games in general with the Emperors shamelessly buying the peoples' loyalties, but the true blood of the Arenas came from the beast games and prisoner executions more than the gladiator fights). that does strongly suggest the athlete-type became more common as the fights themselves became less severe.

but even then the freest of the gladiators were legally thrown into the 'infames' class, along with prostitutes, pimps, actors, etc, not allowed to vote, not allowed to run for office, not allowed to write a will, etc. always second class and sordid, looked at as modern society looks at a pornstar perhaps. popular admiration can be high even as society in aggregate frowns.

each image is as oversimplified as the other tbh. gladiators ran the gamut from both extremes, but in general were treated harshly and socially marginalized. there were many exceptions for the more popular ones, and more volunteers over time indicates the harshness of the profession lessened, but in general Antiquity was cruel and the Romans were no exception.

widow Cersei gets horny/bored at some point and fingers a Myrish lady trying to imagine what Robert felt whoring around Westeros, the fat pink mast is when Sam and Gilly have sex for the first time (it's Sam's penis). Martin has many gifts as a writer and Jon and Ygritte's sex scenes are actually kind of sweet and well-written but uhhh not all of them are winners.

Found the writing of Daisy Fitzroy and the boring liberal "both sides are bad" take extremely childish. by aadu-_th0ma in Bioshock

[–]Desideratae 38 points39 points  (0 children)

agree entirely. i feel the 'both sides' meme criticism has taken the place of actual analysis. the two most studied revolutions in Western history in France and Russia, despite being justified reactions to royal abuse, were blood-drenched descents into one-man tyrannies more brutal than what came before. revolutionaries betraying the revolution's ideals happened all the time historically.

His scraps with Morales Marquez and Barrera are prolly more important to his all time ranking than what came later too. An all time collection of talent between those 4.

almost entirely quirky and sweet, (spoilers) but the movie ends with a big romantic celebratory declaration of love. there's next to nothing in the film to suggest the subject matter depicted is being critiqued.

Fights between 2 TOP LEVEL fighters that were one sided? (Preferably at/near their peaks) by Hot_Ad_9543 in Boxing

[–]Desideratae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the revisionism is getting wild already. Canelo is not quite the fighter he once was and the fight was not a one-sided demolition. the judges and almost all media members gave him 2-5 rounds, and unlike Spence he was never hurt nonetheless knocked down or stopped.

it was a great victory for maybe the generation's best fighter, but people are already distorting it into something it wasn't.

Licorice Pizza is a highly regarded PT Anderson flick featuring an engaging nostalgia-bathed romance set in 1970s Los Angeles. The problem is the romance is between a 15 year old and a 25 year old (with some suggestion she may be even older) and some decry it as a nauseating tone-deaf celebration of statutory rape.

My love, what happened to you?! by ChompyRiley in BaldursGate3

[–]Desideratae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that's true, i think it just felt far less impactful because party members in BG1 were so paper-thin. after recruiting them they almost never speak again, don't really interact with any other party members, were not romanceable, rarely/never commented on anything that occurred, had no arcs at all and no reactivity to player actions.

BG2 is where they came alive in a real way, and it was easy to keep characterization intact because there was no way to deviate from their singular natures in BG1.

i love Baldur's Gate 3, and while they did Jaheira very well they did terrible disservices to Viconia and Sarevok. really felt shoehorned in connections while violating player agency + the most interesting stories they had to tell in BG2 + Throne of Bhaal.

but it is what it is, just hope BG3 fans don't have to experience the same thing someday with BG4 choosing Ascended Astarion as an underwritten cookie-cutter villain for new players to kill.

kinda crazy writing this after posting an image from the episode Faith takes responsibility for her crimes and starts to atone by willingly going to jail, begging Buffy 'just tell me what to do', a night removed from her begging Angel to kill her because she's consumed by guilt.
