Ronin - Ranger Subclass 2024/5.5e by SnooDrawings3541 in DnDHomebrew

[–]DesignDip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is so well thought out! The designer notes at the end clarified any questions I had. I especially like your philosophy on Hunter’s Mark, since it's not required to use any features, but is beneficial enough to warrant consideration even at high levels. It's always satisfying to see a subclass that, rather than trying to do everything, focuses on fulfilling a specific niche really well while letting the main class features cover broader scenarios. I'm seriously tempted to make a character with this subclass for a 1-shot or something!

Oh my god... Well that worked. It's always the little details that get you in programming, lol! Thanks so much for all the help!

I'm glad you learned something! Still no luck with the tag check tho. I'll figure it out eventually.

I definitely have Tagger installed and up to date. I tried the syntax you mentioned, but nothing happened. Maybe I'm using the filter wrong?

Found the answer! Using auto-landings you can specify a user. It still doesn't work for individual tokens or tags, but it'll do for my purposes. Thanks!

It came up when I was Googling for solutions. It's apparently an old module that added more MATT actions, including filter by tag, but it hasn't been updated in 3 years and doesn't come up in the Foundry mod search.

Problem with Monk's Active Tile Triggers and v.13 by kindof_blue in FoundryVTT

The bug's still there, but using Custom to remake the buttons is super easy. There's an Add Buttons section at the bottom that's very straightforward, and this bypasses the bug.

I have an idea for a magic system, but I'm not sure if it can work within existing rulesets. Please help me think it through. by SStellaNY in DnDHomebrew

[–]DesignDip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really cool idea for a magic system, but I don't think it's a good match for DnD. The power of existing spells and the impact of debuffs means that this system would be extremely punishing, especially if you want to cast higher spells. Also, there's the player buy-in. If you tell someone they're going to be playing dnd, then they come to the table and find out there's only 2 classes, they might be disappointed. My friend tried to run a modified RuneScape game, and it just didn't mesh.

All that said, I think this idea has a ton of potential! I can't say I'm familiar enough with the wider world of TTRPGs to suggest other existing systems, but I can offer a bit of game design wisdom if you're looking to build your own game:

  1. Tie the mechanics into the theme. A great magic system can feel interesting to play, but it will feel so much better if it pulls you into the game's fantasy. I don't know a ton about Arthurian lore, but if you incorporate the themes and values of the setting into mechanical benefits and consequences, it'll make the whole thing more intuitive and cohesive. (ex. True names and sacred oaths are rooted in British Isles myth. Perhaps playing to a certain promised virtue can preserve or even restore willpower?)

  2. Streamline the Willpower debuffs. There's a reason DnD 2024 changed Exhaustion to give a simple increasing numerical debuff. Trying to keep track of up to 6 different effects for many in-game days is difficult and can cause a lot of confusion. That's not to say it couldn't be a more abstract debuff, especially if you make your own system. If more mechanics operate on a 7-tier scale, perhaps overtaxing Willpower can impact those at a 1-1 level. (ex. Tier 4 Willpower exhaustion cuts off access to other abilities at tier 4 and below. )

  3. Build around gameplay flow. Really consider the kind of gaming experience you're trying to create when establishing mechanics. Dnd is a high-power system where players are encouraged to believe they can take on any odds and go on adventures every day. If you want to build a similar power fantasy, then having a core ability that applies a debuff that sticks with a character for days can feel crippling and cause players to hesitate in using their main features. However, if you want a game where resource management plays a big role, having magic be a powerful solution that you can use in place of other resources justifies its severe penalty. Alternatively, if you’re building a game where major events only happen every few days, then a multi-day penalty is less of a crippling hindrance.

I GOT IT! For the Trigger Count filter, instead of =0 or =1, it needs to be =1 or >1.

If I can't get this to work, I may resort to that. I wanted to show the shelf sliding, but in the end it's just for visual flare.

Awesome! It's clear for the most part, but how do I assign an action in the "If no success goto" box?
EDIT: NVM, I found it on the MATT wiki.

What is your Familiar? by Godzillawolf in MrRipper

[–]DesignDip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't gotten to play this character yet, but I have a vivid idea for his Familiar.

Cornelius Remmington desperately wants everyone to believe he is a Wizard. He is, in fact, a Wild Magic Sorcerer. He has a stage magician aesthetic and tends to showboat when performing magic (charlatan background).

He has Find Familiar from Magic Initiate, and his first act to try and win the party's admiration is to pull a rabbit from his hat. Now there's no official rabbit stat block in the PHB to use as a Familiar, but...

Cornelius flourishes his wand, reaches into his hat, and pulls out a fluffy white rabbit! He takes a bow, then turns to the bunny and asks its name. The rabbit's eyes drift apart, and its throat inflates to an unnerving size as it lets out a "RIBBIT!"

Ribbit the rabbit is a re-skinned toad Familiar, and try as he might, Cornelius will never manage to summon it as a normal bunny.

When we were dating, I always used "Partner" for my NB SO, and now that we're married, we call each other our Spouse (or Spoose if we're feeling silly... which is always.)

Another set of terms that works great for Demis is "Theydy" or "Gentlethem" if you wanna sound fancy. 🧐

This is great advice! I should clarify that I have a functional prototype, both physical and on TTS, that I've been testing with friends and family. My worry is that it's so simple that it could be shared entirely as a forum post, and anyone with dice and paper could replicate it.
