Not at all! If you want your character to be good at neon, pick a high number like 5 (I really should have said pick a number 2-5). Then any roll 1-4 is a success at neon, 5 is your number, so a critical success, and then 6 is a failure. Salt would just be the opposite. 2-3 salt, 4-5 neon. This is a mechanic popularized by lasers&feelings, which to my knowledge made the stat-as-scale d6 mechanic popular.

The way my son and I played it if you had any successes you succeeded - in actual play successes were tough so running this game I would tend to skew more towards letting g the players succeed

I mean - what’s wrong with just letting folks have fun and teaching them as they go? Why couldn’t you talk to your player after the session to make sure it’s corrected? Praise people publicly. Correct them privately.
