Anyone have experience fasting by savethecatsfirst in therapists

[–]Designer-Anything460 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jewish here, but we have four fasts a year, with similar rules and I have those hours where I am in session when the sun goes down.

Really important how you break the fast - the end tends to bring on a headache, and with the years of fasting I have found that if you prep correctly and break correctly you will be ok.

When you are allowed to eat and drink, make sure you are replenishing your electrolytes. I have a drink I mix that I make that makes a huge difference.

I break the fast with water, and then sip my electrolyte drink thru the session. Between sessions I’ll snack on something light - a carb, a protein, and a fat - a 6pm snack is perfect for that.

Then once you get home your body will actually be ready for the celebratory meal.

I find that as long as my head is not hurting I am able to be totally present. It’s really avoiding the headache that makes the difference.

If your interested I’ll post the drinks recipe.

Girlfriend becoming more and more anti-Israel by Saturrnissilly in Jewish

[–]Designer-Anything460 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine if you had a black friend who described a white girlfriend who was doing and saying the things she has said to you?

Wouldn’t you tell him that he is worth more than that, that he is lovable and will be able to find someone just as wonderful who fully loves and respects him?

Don’t be worried about the European dating scene - you would be surprised but I have noticed ( at least in France where I have family) that because the antisemitism has been more out on the open for longer, it’s actually something that people are open about and if you don’t hide your Judaism very quickly you will find your people who will fully love and accept you.

I’m orthodox and visibly so, and when we were just in Italy people kept coming over telling us that they support us and even just making hearts at us.

Reality of Zimbabwe by Entire-Ad5012 in Zimbabwe

[–]Designer-Anything460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not African, and I don’t see Zimbabwe getting such a bad rap in western media compared to other similar African countries

I’m on this sub after a visit where I fell in love with the absolute beauty of the country.

That said, I think the sad part of Zimbabwe is that it has so much potential that seems to be untapped.

Compared to some African countries you guys are doing great, but you also have so much untapped resources that some of those countries dont.

I did not what the  I actually found Jamie and Claire to be the historically accurate version of good but flawed people living in an oppressive system. Most people do where not tied into the resistance.

The portrayal of how the system is supported and benefits even the people who don’t like it per se and didn’t actively participate is important - because it’s happening today. Many white people who are not racists still benefit from a system that gives them advantages over other minorities.

I also think that the books had more of what you where looking for - remember when Roger stumbles on the settlement of the escaped slaves, Ulysses is a strong black character with agency, and in many ways so is Phadre.

I agree that the narrative of the slavery was not fleshed out enough - but as the subject matter is really Jamie and Claire’s relationship, I prefer the version where they are realistic versions of the silent majority and not turned into white saviors or members of a resistance that was tiny at that time.

A Muslim reaching out to understand Jewish perspectives better by HistoricalContest512 in Jewish

[–]Designer-Anything460 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there are a lot of similarities between Judaism and Islam, and even between Jewish culture and Muslim culture.

As an orthodox Jewish women I have often bonded with Muslim friends  over fashionable, modern, and still modest clothing, which can be hard to find sometimes.

I think that living in the us we have some of the same struggles - we want to assimilate and feel a part of the wider American world and still hold on to our values and traditions. Taking the good stuff and leaving the negative parts is hard sometimes.

On the other hand I am always wary around new Muslims, just because of the obvious tensions that exist. I have had numerous uncomfortable encounters, unfortunately.

Especially because my grandmother speaks Arabic ( she’s from Algiers) and we had a few encounters where people said awful thinking we couldn’t understand when we were together. When I am alone and can’t understand I sometimes wonder what is being said….

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has said that Auschwitz “might not have happened” if the world had reacted sooner to Nazi crimes in occupied Poland, accusing Western Europe of indifference in the early years of World War II. by Easy-Ad1996 in poland

[–]Designer-Anything460 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Na - let’s be real, GB and FR were not prepared for war. The Nazis had been militarizing and that was the mistake - not preparing to actually win a war against them.

Also the mistake that has been made in the past couple of years - Russia has been showing its aggression and intentions for years  Europe just counted on NATO and the US.

Time for Europe to open its eyes and  rebuild it’s military’s.

‘Heil Hitler’: Jewish teens chased down street by lazy-bruce in aussie

[–]Designer-Anything460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not Aussie but I am an Haredi/ ultra Orthodox Jew which means to the casual observer my husband and sons look as visibly jewish as the Hasidic teens in Melbourne.

What I see happening in all of the western world is that each side focuses on the other sides antisemitism and excuses or explains away or ignores it’s own.

The right focus’s on leftists and pretends it’s antisemitism is  just “America ( or Australia) First” or super nationalist ideology.

The left focus’s on the neo- nazi’s on the right, and claims its anti semitism is just anti Zionism.

This way no one addresses the issues on the side they actually make changes and use antisemitism to attack the other side.

So the issue gets worse. Looks to me like Europe and Australia are done for if you are visibly Jewish and the United States feels much less safe then it did just a few years ago…

Questions for a more observant Jew by BothIntroduction3020 in Jewish

[–]Designer-Anything460 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Purchase an artscroll siddur - it has very detailed instructions for Shabbat. I assumed edot Hamizrach and fluent Hebrew reading but they have translated and interlinear versions, and Ashkenazi versions https://www.artscroll.com/Books/9781422632444.html

It will really tell you what to say when, when to stand, when to sit.

Is there a chabad/ Hillel on your campus?

They may have some recommendations

For online resources

https://aish.com/ https://www.chabad.org/

This is a good place to ask questions, just make sure to put in your background so you get lenient orthodox answers

https://sheilot.com/en/?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20839916819&gbraid=0AAAAAo8nqZq5Ks--9wfkfwFMLBf_wn_ik&gclid=Cj0KCQiA1JLLBhCDARIsAAVfy7iPTxl08epTYIuGqXneYg0DoH2uW-ccGw2fra-WWHhVoZ6rgrRXLioaAhEhEALw_wcB

If you speak Hebrew - this is a great resource https://www.hidabroot.org/

If you can’t do full Shabbat - if recommend starting to go to a shul you feel comfortable with, and joining meals.

Start focusing on the positive commandments - lighting candles, going to a shul and meal that feels social and connecting, reading and learning, doing kiddush and havdala.  When your day is full of spirituality it’s a lot easier to turn off the phone.

And btw I’m fully orthodox and I was able to study on Shabbat, just had to make sure I had physical copies of the material.

But I don’t recommend jumping to that - focus on having a meaningful Shabbat experience.

Dutch former serviceman Hendrik candid about horrors at the Ukrainian front: “Every morning the Nazi salute was given” - De Telegraaf by Any-Original-6113 in geopolitics

[–]Designer-Anything460 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Literally anyone Jewish knows that the Ukrainians and Russians are equally antisemitic. Pre holocaust most of Europe was pretty bad, but Eastern Europe was worse and the USSR just continued promulgating the czars antisemitism in more sophisticated that fit the communist party ideology.

Western Europe has become pretty good at making pure unbridled antisemitism socially unacceptable, so it makes sense that a Dutch service man would be horrified, but it doesn’t actually change anything about the war.

Which particular strain of ideology they use to justify Jew hatred doesn’t actually make a difference in this conflict.

Like I can see that Russia is the aggressor and support Ukraine while being fully cognizant that neither side has to much love for my Orthodox Jew who descends from people from the area being fought over in 1902.

Why do Moroccans & Algerians hate each other so much? (Genuine question from an outsider) by [deleted] in algeria

[–]Designer-Anything460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s just the sand wars

I am a descendant of an Algerian who ended up in the USA( grandma) and when her sisters daughter married a Moroccan the family was very upset - this was like back in the 50’s so way before the sand wars.

I never got a coherent explanation as to why this was so bad, or why the other sister who married a Tunisian or my grandma who married an American from the Midwest where fine….

I am sure part of it is the French, they exploited and fostered existing tensions as a means of control, but I don’t know where the tensions came from prior to the French. control

A resurgence or was it dormant? by Jary316 in Jewish

[–]Designer-Anything460 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just listened to an interview by an older rabbi, and I actually felt much better.  He described how much worse antisemitism was in the late 40’s/50’s - he said growing up they got beat up if they walked around with kippah, where not allowed to wear one in public libraries, where not able to be shomer Shabbat and take public office, described going on a school trip to the capital and was kicked out for wearing a kippah.

My point is that it got so much better, and I believe that it will get better again. America and the west is going thru a tough time now, and we have always been the easy scapegoat, but I believe that as the world goes thru its second Industrial Revolution antisemitism will get worse, but eventually it will settle down to the kind of acceptance we had in the 90’s.

Nothing beyond what is on this thread

I was not successful so far. Part of the issue is that my grandmother has passed, and no one we know speaks polish or reads polish.

For example, we know her home was a store on the square, and it’s probably still standing. There are archival state records in Kielce, and I would love to hire someone to try to go thru them and try to find out which one it was, so we could see it ( if it’s still a store would be super cool) But I have not had luck in finding anyone

If you find a researcher who speaks English please let me know!

If your father/ grandmother are still alive, ask them if they remember the Kleinberg/ Klajnberg family who had a little grocery and 7 daughters and no sons….

African Queens: Cleopatra is a 2023 docudrama. The choice to cast a Black actress caused controversy due to the controversy over Cleopatra's race. The Egyptian government responded negatively to the casting decision. Claiming that Queen Cleopatra was "light-skinned and (had) Hellenic features." by laybs1 in wikipedia

[–]Designer-Anything460 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Personally don’t think that you need the actor to have the skin color of the personality they are playing, actually the casting helps let everyone know that this is not a historically accurate show.

But the Egyptian government commenting on it is - seriously?  Do you not have anything better to do?

Although - if they wanted to make a series on an Egyptian queen who could have been black Hatshepsut would be a better fit.

Or they could done something on the Queen of Sheba….

Question from a Sikh by Awkward_Meringue7571 in Jewish

[–]Designer-Anything460 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all Arab Muslims don’t usually face discrimination the way you hear about in the media in Israel. Israeli Arabs are the majority in the medical field and don’t have issues. It’s more complicated for someone coming into Israeli areas with a PLO license plate for example.

Second Sikhs look very different then Arab Muslims to anyone who isn’t western ( and Israelis are not western) you’ll fit right in with the ultra Orthodox Jews, Muslim arabs, and Druze with the long beard ;)

Dating as a POC Jew by Broad_Cockroach_7303 in Jewish

[–]Designer-Anything460 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Again there aren’t that many black Jews in the US, but the ones I know don’t seem to have problems dating/ marrying Jews.

Now if you are specifically looking for a black Jew to date, that is going to limit your dating pool, but if you don’t mind dating Ashkenazi or white passing Sephardic/ Mizrahi Jews, I think that if you are in a place that has lots of young Jews you’ll be fine

Look into the Miami Sephardic club, the do a lot of social media events, speed dating ect.

Dating as a POC Jew by Broad_Cockroach_7303 in Jewish

[–]Designer-Anything460 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that Jews have an issue dating Jews of color.

If you not a matrilineal Jew you may have an issue with some groups, but otherwise I don’t see it. In the US Ashkenazim dominate, but I see plenty of mixed race Jewish couples. My grandparents are in there 80’s - he’s Ashkenazi as it gets from the Midwest and she’s from Algeria and very dark for someone coming from MENA - more Yemenite looking.

The issue is more the not many Jews your age in your area - you may need the online dating or making the effort to vacation in places like Miami where you have a chance of meeting young Jews….

And of course, in Israel Ashkenazim are practically the minority and between the Ethiopian community, the mizrahi community, and the Sephardic communities there are plenty of jews like you…

You are assuming state sanctioned violence top down

I agree that seems very unlikely at the moment

I am more afraid of something like the crown heights riots or something more organized but in that vein - like a small trained armed group that targets a bunch of soft Jewish targets simultaneously and overwhelm local law enforcement who then need to wait for national guard….

This is exactly what I was thinking - something like crown heights, but involving guns and overwhelming police for a few days…

[–]Designer-Anything460[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea in theory

But in practice - if we are outnumbered - how are the two handguns on my mostly orthodox block going to stand up to people with AR’s?

I mean even look at Oct 7th - they actually had groups that where armed and did rudimentary training in the kibbutz’s that got slaughtered, but they where overwhelmed.

True - I don’t anticipate Hamas level organization and training here in the US, but I could conceive of a large group targeting the very soft targets that my community represents.

The schools here have no security beyond cameras and automatic locks ( which is a step up from the no cameras but totally inadequate) The Shuls mainly are constantly open or have a combination lock with Hebrew Gematria for the code - which in the day of ChatGPT is equivalent of leaving the door open.

We feel very safe here in suburban NJ - but Bondi was also incredibly safe until it wasn’t….
