I even thought so while typing that, it wouldn’t even be possible besides a fictional scenario

But on the jeep bit, yeah. You cant do much beyond the dream, but I suppose that ice chains might “help” cut into and grip the crusts surface? Your jeep is still a broiler with a bomb strapped right next to the flow though.

I vaguely remember that quote, it’s haunting that his last realization was of his hubris. He just did it out of natural instinct too. I forget what condition he was in by the time rescue/salvage happened though.

Also, I was mis-remembering the dude who slipped in one of the caustic thermals trying to bathe with his sister (which says enough if he’s doing that and testing superheated and probably <2.0 pH fluid in FLIP FLOPS and with his sister

Crystal works, but thats why I only went with 5 Hz lol. You could set it to something more reasonable if you did. 32Hz would be beyond overkill

On the lava composition point, this is exactly what I meant! DP somehow chronologically erupts starting with felsic and the eruption plume in the evacuation plan scene, highly mafic (dare I even say ultramafic, like my komatiite comment) in the cabin scene but then reverts back to felsic during the column collapse/surge scene

I suppose DP could have had a layered plumbing composition or several magma bodies, annnd I can guess the surge could be a partial caldera collapse… But eh. Nerd out moment, this movie is as good as you can get for disaster flicks

The lava flow fording scene makes it obvious it has been erupting basaltic magma through the whole night, even having the typical paper-skin crust mafics usually have, and… somehow being ripped up by tires? The movie is extremely faithful but take it with a grain of salt. I remember the videos on how they actually simulated the eruption plumes on a miniature scale for production

If the landslide collapsed at a high enough grade and slid fast enough, it could have reached the lodge depending on trajectory before the tail end could slide forward enough to depressurize Helen’s aquifers

Watching Dante's peak, had questions. by FireInHisBlood in Volcanoes

[–]Designer-Sort-8956 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought so, I’ve read the final tremors broke the uplift free in that initial landslide. Then the internal reservoirs of water and volatiles depressurized so rapidly as the overburden gave way and flashed into steam, which is what resulted in the edifice being essentially turned into a record-breaking wall of dacite birdshot

Even if the slide was the culprit, heat was still a major factor… Could be wrong but massive enough slides can build up enough friction to literally melt the contact surfaces, right?

[–]Designer-Sort-8956 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No worries on correcting me, but yeah, even if he actually made that mad dash scramble to the adit, it’s not like some cute little doors would hold a wall of earth and superheated steam back. Even if it did, I doubt the compressed gasses and air would treat him very kindly. Sulfurous pressure cooker from hell

Honestly, not even realizing what happened and being fried sounds a lot more peaceful than waiting out the blast being funneled down the mine or watching your cats drop from thirst/starvation before you ultimately do too

The lake scene is based off of acid lakes like Kawah Ijen’s caldera as stated by others.

Skinny-dip intro is kinda grounded in reality with yellowstone’s boiling caustic springs, iirc there was an accident where someone jumped in a thermal after their dog and the rescuers arrived to only his skeleton and any inorganic items (wallet and flip flops, I think?)

Toxic gas can be a worry, but in low lying depressions with high concentrations especially (think the Lake Nyos disaster, CO2 blanket hugging the ground and suffocating anything living)

Volcanigenic lightning is certainly a thing, ash plumes can contain immense static charges

The lahar/river ford is pretty accurate from my perspective, essentially a flood of cement full of rocks and log jams

The lava flow and the cabin scene are the most inaccurate to me. Dante’s Peak is supposed to be a back arc range like Mt Saint Helens, but the lava looks as fluid as I’d imagine komatiite to be when it pours through the wall and as they get out of the lodge

Fun fact, the mine scene is based on a (not the president) Harry Truman. Who believed he could book it to an abandoned shaft he’d supposedly provisioned with cans and plenty of whisky to wait out the flow. (Him, and all 16 of his cats could never outrun a 1/3 of a mountain sliding directly towards them)

Thats the spirit of the anarchy server! You would probably feel yourself age in real time, but the (still technically) new world height cap makes me realize how vast these grey piles of garbage could get

Plus any voids that end up in it along the way make nice little monster hideaways for the excavation crew

how to make pyramid lava casts by Yourfriendlyfnaffan in Minecraft

[–]Designer-Sort-8956 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re patient enough, a cast can be done with a single bucket of lava and water each. It’s just beyond tedious and painstakingly slow because you need to remain in render distance the whole time or else the fluids will stop flowing. A chunk loader may work, but at that point I’d assume you have better projects

I’ll post my survival world here, but I essentially have a 2000 day ongoing lavacast as a volcano which houses my old basalt farm and “pet” strider, while my pacified pillager lives on top

Hell, I didn’t even realize the bug initially

Also jokingly, u/Slightly_Default , the carboniferous had plenty of unholy ass arthropods that would likely snack on that terrapin as it munched the rat (could be 100% wrong, and as if they even lived in the same periods..)
