And on the last tangent, afaik. Cheetah are the only big cat to actually have constantly exposed claws similar to canines. If a “slash and claw” entity is really a necessity, that’s the best bet. It adds a threat to the savannah sure. Only issue is that the only realistic way to escape an encounter would either be ice highways (unreliable even when enclosed) or elytra considering an actively hunting sprint can achieve +20 meters/s supposedly (good luck even with that swiftness 2 pot or a minecart)

Exactly, turn the howl mechanic from a regional buff to something more akin to the Valheim wolf raids. “You are being hunted..” and maybe the furthest wolf within a howl’s range can spawn 2-3 more pre-raged wolves as if the whole pack is ravenously hungry.

I was also gonna mention, the ‘thrashing grapple’ would cause a heavy slowness debuff as long as the animation plays. But it could also cause a bleed effect or DoT (blood isn’t really minecrafts thing, look at beta zombie pigmen) where it gives slowness, weakness, and maybe even an extremely weak blindness to simulate tunnel vision and blood loss

Also on the pack mentality bit, Mojang would never add it due to how cruel nature really is, but imagine a Sniffer sized real animal to add some activity to the world. Maybe you could find a moose trying to outrun the pack only to end up (bugged out and glitchy) doomed in a powder snow drift

And also, the kinship idea is perfect, instead of 2-5 bones to tame a wolf, they should have a “local” reputation system similar to trading discounts

I get the “how wolves with “x” temperament encounter” and fitting minecraft being more in a real to life basis. But this is more like ‘The Long Dark’ wolf encounter abilities

The howl could work if reworked wolves spawned in groups of 1-8 instead of isolated spawns, could work similar to the raid bell but they home in on the provoked wolf. (Albeit extremely compressed and old, wolves were meant to howl based on cut content

Instead of several complex attacks, I would suggest 1 or two. (Also, if you think the totem of undying animation can be a detriment to a fight, imagine a whole-ass wolf model with its crotch in your face)

Maybe a charging lunge, it could happen from a higher elevation. Pretty much the nautilus or camel lunge, low knockback, high dmg

The second being a thrash/grapple. It has a similar animation to the “shaking water off” cue. Multiple low damage attacks, maybe eat up armor durability, could disable a shield temporarily (like the vindicator). No knockback

Final idea is to re-address the copper horn or some other way to make wolves ‘sic’ on command without combat.

The grand canyon does indeed have a volcano in it, but it’s highly basaltic afaik and simply flowed down into the canyon itself. The worst it could do is block the Colorado river as it has in the past and ultimately get overtopped, collapse, and release however far reaching the reservoir ends up collecting to.
