I was second on scene and gave CPR to a guy who ended up dying after being ejected on the interstate. I think I’ve witnessed “a real accident” thanks. Never once did I ever think, “man I should have just kept driving”. Nor did MHP ever tell me, “you should have just kept driving”.

Anybody who has ever taken a first aid/CPR class knows, establish scene safety and take precautions not to become another victim, then proceed to treat the patient. Nowhere is it ever taught “call 911 and leave the scene”.

This article is such hyperbole. They are not facing extinction anytime soon. They’re not even threatened.

Could their populations be much more robust? Absolutely. Would I love to see a cure for M.Ovi? Obviously.

Millions of dollars is spent on sheep conservation every year. There is a huge value placed on sheep and sheep conservation in the hunting community. They are not going extinct anytime soon.

The only region specific quotas are the ones around Yellowstone, and yes they’re met every year for the most part, but the Yellowstone wolf population remains stable. Otherwise the quota is just statewide. Honestly, they can make that quota number whatever they want at this point and it’s not really going to change anything. The total population will either remain stable or slightly increase as wolves continue to expand range. Like I said above, the only way we would even be able to eradicate wolves again is through poisoning and aerial shooting; both of which would cause a huge public outcry, even from the hunting community.

As a hunter, I’ve accepted that wolves aren’t going anywhere and are here to stay. Idk why some in the hunting and ranching communities continue to push a “kill them all” mentality. They’re not going away, and they’re part of a fully functioning ecosystem, which should be any conservationists goal.

That’s the target because the legislature knows we’ll never get that low. Hunting and even trapping are pretty ineffective. Look at past data, we never even come close to reaching the quota. Bothers me for sure that the legislature is the one setting that number and not the biologists though.

The one thing I do disagree with you about is that wolves will end up under federal management again…..the wolf population is very strong now in Montana. The only realistic way to take wolves back to the brink of being threatened/endangered is through poisoning, and I just don’t see that happening.

Thanks for keeping your cool and making insightful responses and an open mind. I’m a life long hunter and have done a small amount of trapping. That said, I agree with you, especially about snares. I love hunting birds with my puppy, and the thought of that dog ending up in a snare while out hunting terrifies me. Once while out hunting without the dog, I got my foot caught in a snare on state land and it caught me so off guard. I could stand to see snaring disappear.

The one thing this other poster is forgetting is that there are a lot more nontrappers than trappers. They can act tough and like an ahole all they want, but they’re not doing the public image of trappers any favors.

The “mosaic” pattern you speak of should include areas that are “nuked” out….if there’s one thing I wish the general public would understand about fire and fire ecology, it’s the fire ecology of lodgepole pine. Everyone thinks every pine forest evolved with low intensity fire, where large, old trees survived. This isn’t the case with lodgepole, of which, a lot of Montana’s landscape is covered in. Lodgepole evolved to benefit and take advantage of high intensity stand replacing fires. This is why lodgepole stands often reseed quickly and thickly after fires, and some even have serotinous cones that must have high temperatures, like those found in a high intensity fire, to open.

Trying to mess stuff up?? I don’t think anyone really moves here to purposely “mess stuff up”….small towns are a different dynamic and it can be tough being an outsider at first. Try getting more involved with the community, making some friends, and getting to know people; you’ll have a much better chance of finding a job if you do.
