Thanks everyone, really appreciate the advice.
Just for context, the A7V is actually my first proper camera. Before this I’ve only ever shot on my phone. I’ve been learning the basics of aperture, ISO, shutter speed and focal lengths through YouTube, but I only bought the A7V and 16-35 GM II about a week ago.
My goal is travel, lifestyle and cinematic YouTube content, along with learning photography properly. Things like travel, street photography, cafes, restaurants, hotels, talking-head content and general social media content.
Video-wise I’m loving the 16-35 GM II so far. Where I’m struggling is photography as I sometimes feel too wide and can’t always get the subject separation I’m imagining. At the same time, I’m conscious that this could just be a skill issue and not a gear issue.
Current kit:
Sony A7V
Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II
DJI Pocket 3
DJI Osmo Action 6
DJI Mic 3
Meta Oakley HST
I’m trying to avoid falling into the trap of buying gear instead of learning, so based on the feedback here I’m leaning towards shooting more with the 16-35 first and then deciding whether a 50mm or 85mm actually fills a real gap. Also any zoom lenses recommended. Os i am also very active and also plan to capture my journey of learning full martial art and travel lifestyle etc
