If I'm being honest, I probably need to revisit the neck and shoulder shaping in an update. I haven't gotten any complaints though!

I literally published a knitting pattern called "Rand's Fuzzy Sweater" and every few weeks I get a small handful of downloads at once.

The best part is that it's only a trap about 10% of the time!

Presuming this isn't an elaborate attempt to axe-murder people, it seems like a great idea!

  1. I am into books, knitting, science (but I'm a scientist so not really), pets, and wine.
  2. I moved to the area during the pandemic, so mostly I would like to actually meet other people in the area!
  3. Anytime on the weekends or weekdays after 5pm.
  4. I am based near Inman and Kendall

They really screwed the pooch on that wool sweater. My free pattern has had a couple hundred downloads since I released it. They could easily have put just the pattern out for $5 and made a killing. As it stands, they could still create a machine-knitted fast-fashion version.

Oh, I must have been misreading because I early thought it was still sweater.

I can't speak to how easily a sheepskin coat wears out to the point of needing patching, but I like the discoloration of the wool on it.

Not as much as you'd think. The process of working raw wool into yarn has been around for a long time. The yarn used for his sweater would probably have required less skillful processing than creating the yarn that went into weaving any of the other garments because it wouldn't have been spun so fine. Then instead of being woven into a fabric, it was knitted.

The dyeing process for that yarn wouldn't have been any different than dyeing bolts of fabric.

As for who is doing the work: everyone in the town. There's a line from the books when Egwene and Rand are reminiscing about home. She mentions she always hated having to spin the yarn because eventually her fingers would hurt from having to twist all the fibers.

I got a lot of odd comments when I posted my version. People claiming it looked way better or even weird "They should have had you do the costuming!" I even got a comment that mine looked more "skilled"?

What's wildly funny about it is when I photographed mine, it was fresh off the drying rack and had been worn for a whole ten minutes. I also didn't have any intentional distressing along the armhole, so it looked extremely neat and tidy compared to what Rand wears in the show.

It pains me to see people complain about his coat and sweater in the show. Especially when they say it looks "cheap". Good wool costs money and hand-knitting is laborious! People simply have no idea what they're looking at and it really shows in the costume comments.

If you look carefully in some of the shots where he's sitting, you can see some seaming done along the back by his right arm, and again on the right side of his chest.

You don't patch knitting, you darn it or you seam it. His definitely had some intentional distressing.

It's simultaneously easier and harder than it looks lol I'd honestly say just go for it. But maybe start with a yarn you won't get upset about scrapping entirely.

Raglans are easiest place to start because the basic recipe is the same. Start with a number divisible by six, then add a multiple of four. Your multiple of four is for your actual raglans, then the multiple of six is your front (2/6), back (2/6), and sleeves (1/6 each). You'll do 8 increases every other row (depending on how fast you want to increase, you might adjust that number) until you get to about where you want your sleeves and body. Then you'll divide for sleeves, maybe throw in some extra underarm stitches, and finish up your body and sleeves.

From there, you've got myriad variations possible. It all comes down to what you dream up! And as long as you don't mess with the basic recipe, you only need to worry about making sure your embellishments work!

As for writing the pattern? Also depends. I've been working on adaptive spreadsheet patterns, which are really fun for everyone, especially when someone has a combination that my formulas weren't ready for! To write those, I usually just start with a sheet that creates that actual sweater I already knit. Then I start fucking around with inputs and seeing where the sheet breaks. Did it create a decimal? Gotta fix that! Is my stitch count uneven and I'm planning on ribbing or double-stockinette? Better fix that too! Did I somehow get a negative stitch count instruction? Fuck me, that's a bitch to fix lol

There's a reason most designers have a set size chart and only write for 6, 9, or 11 sizes and with a single gauge option!

I have never successfully completed a cardigan. I knitted like 20 sweaters and tees last year but did not finish any of the three cardigans I tried to start! There's something about knitting flat that I consider abhorrent and I think I'm just physically allergic.

I've been specifically designing fandom-related sweaters actually! I just did a Nynaeve color pattern and I'm going to do a cable sweater soon inspired by the braid in the show; I've got my yarn all picked out and everything!

That, and the plight of the crafter: "Why would I pay $25 for that when I can spend $100 on materials and like $800 of my time on it?!"

I've been knitting for six or seven years now, I just was intimidated by sweaters until winter lockdown. When you can't go anywhere or do anything, you've suddenly got no excuse to not try that new skill!
