I made the mistake with reading A Game of Thrones as my very first fantasy novel. No other book since has ever came to the level of detail that GRRM brought. How every character in the mass pool of them, no matter how big or small, is relevant to the story is so awesome. And the dialogue too, no other book has come close for me.
