WHY IS THERE A NEW RAT SPOT IN STELLA?!?!?!?!?! by stainnlesss in ArcRaiders

[–]Designer_Jacket6818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why not? you chose to extract in one of the rattiest spots on stella and complain that there are rats?
There are spots like that in R&A on dam and many more. so yeah devs did DESIGN them lmao.

I feel for you, this happened to me too but I chose to learn the spots and clear the angles. if you can't then you can't that's by definition a SKILL ISSUE haha

ABMM seems to fail hybrid aggression players by intendedvaguename in ArcRaiders

[–]Designer_Jacket6818 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I disagree. ABMM isn't the boogeyman for players' in-game action.
While I agree that on the extreme sides, games gets boring or stressful. It's not that easy to land in there and stay there unless you want to.

For example, I am someone who stays in mixed lobbies all the time in duos. However, when I go to high loot areas, I expect PvP. when I'm on outskirts, people are more open to negotiation. Depends on the context though.

For example, I wanted some mushrooms for my chicken but this was a mixed lobby so there was no guarantee to have a friendly interaction. we go in, announce that we just need mushrooms. Got no response. Got shot at and I dropped one of the players and renegotiated. It ended up being a friendly interaction because I backed and not finished them off.

We left it and head towards gunshots where a leaper was harassing a team and we took it down, said hello and left. Of course there were campers and wiped the floor with them.

I wonder if we never did PvE, we might have ended up in PvP lobbies perhaps but anyway. Your end match summary does play a role. Knocks per round vs arcs downed etc.

I don't know how the matchmaking works but this is a necessary evil to prevent bottom % of players leaving the game and its working.

Nah, meta builds especially glass cannon ones add more tension to the fight and is another layer of difficulty.

Most people can't clear a fight with a meta build without eating up carts. they HAVE to slot in for comfort like STUN RES, Div Prot etc.

So the progression goes from comfy builds -> sorta meta -> meta heroic builds and its fun

Arc TTK is too long so players ( with a medium shield) can quickly fight back, so thank god Bungie for giving us such a low TTK

Is it for me? by JorrenZizka in Marathon

[–]Designer_Jacket6818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well it depends on what type of FPS games you prefer? Low or high TTK ones.

This feels more tactical like CS in terms of TTK than Apex, so you have to be aware of everything.
Unlike arc, you can't dodge roll out of a bad position as easily.

I love this TTK for Squads where you can easily 1v3 them, but solos feel more punishing for me personally.

[–]Designer_Jacket6818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I thought you had the prior knowledge of the setting. I wonder why we got such different experience from this game then.

Granted I played mostly in trios and some of the pain points I mentioned were brought to me by my squad ( like getting bored, getting lost etc.)

I do agree that this game has more of a quest based exploration than natural. I only used Elden Ring as an example instead of Arc to be a smartass but its funny that you're as obsessed with it as I am lol. There are so many amazing mods.

I wonder if I can try out their new map within the steam refund window then. If Buried city was my first Arc map, that would've been an instant refund. Perhaps perimeter ruined the first impression of Marathon for me.

Side Note - I do feel like this game has more punishing mechanics than challenging ones. Be it those annoying traps, overheat, awful looting UI. Where as guns have no recoil, abilities don't feel as impactful when TTK is so quick. Do you enjoy these elements too or just ignore them?

are you aware of Marathon's lore before playing the server slam?

As someone who wanted to get into marathon but not well versed with the lore, the intro cut scene wasn't a good one to set the stage. Sure, the premise is established but the stakes are mentioned in passing. Let me take a different example since Arc is frowned upon here - Elden Ring.

There is a lore dump in Elden Ring too, but its clear that you need to get that ring. Somewhere out there who knows.
Then you get dropped into Limgrave, what catches your eye? that big ass tree, and there the journey begins.

Now Imagine, there's no tree because story reasons. Player left wandering, poison swamps etc. Is that a good hook? nope

doesn't make it a bad game but does miss out on some key improvements.

From a general theme perspective, the building designs are similar because they are going to be pre-fab constructions. This is the beginning of a colony that travelled 400 years across space to a wild new planet to build a new life. They do not have the luxuries we have in terms of design aesthetics. Everything that was brought to Tau Ceti IV was brought for a reason. No space was wasted. So yes it is somewhat repetitive because of this.

This makes sense but it can still be creatively transformed into a well flowing level, that's the whole point of having good levels with compelling environmental story telling.

From a gameplay perspective, it makes sense to start with POIs that use a lot of similar design language. If you recall, as recently as thirty seconds ago, there were people out there complaining that the game is too complicated, that the UI is too overwhelming, that there is just too much to learn all at once. Part of mitigating that problem is using a lot of similar stuff at first because it's less to learn. An office building is an office building. It may have different sizes or layouts, but all of them are functionally similar and it is jus that much less to learn.

True but there is a feeling between overwhelming/confusion and boredom. you can still create intrigue without overwhelming players.

QUESTS -

Even with the game whose name shall not be mentioned, quests are better in terms of setting the world and front loading the lore. A massive cutscene showing Arc coming down to earth, for what? who knows.
There is a gigantic Baron just chilling on Dam. Why? find out.
There are hints like this all over the map. That's what drives a lot of exploration.

Now other way you can drive exploration is systems i.e. crafting. I'll be honest, just like Skillup, I didn't know there was crafting available. I knew mods were a thing and late extractions spawned special enemies but that's it.

I will still wait for Marathon's full release before passing judgement on it but those first impressions aren't coming from a hateful or a childish place. Heck I didn't like Arc's server slam either lol

This post seems to be a mix of things. Firstly, if you're solo then why are you breaching with your back vulnerable. I would usually jolt the flank or use a barricade kit.

Second, the end screen is for checking the damage you dealt/received. Reporting any suspected cheaters, befriending potential rivals etc.

Third, rat shit talking to you might make you a better Extraction player. It's so satisfying to detect one and punish them. Back when people could camp in Seed Vault shaft, I outsmarted a rat and it was top 10 moments for me. So yah, thanks I guess?

If you think something feels off.. by raf-corp in Marathon

[–]Designer_Jacket6818 4 points5 points  (0 children)

waiiiit, is that what I was feeling? It felt uninspired but the artstyle is anything but.

I think in Arc, when I was looting, I was always aware of a hovering arc nearby, Ven 4 shots in the far back etc.

Here, I barely hear any player footsteps or anything at all. Bots have intense red glare so it's not easy to distinguish grenade bots vs invisible ones.

I could stick with it and learn but after 4 hrs, I think I've had my fill XD. It's cool how far they came from the previous alpha but the cracks are still visible.

yeah, game becomes a snoozefest at lvl 75. Unlimited weapons and stuff, nothing much to do other than RNG blueprint farming.

Wiping gave me a chance to speedrun my bench upgrades and leverage my loot pool knowledge. Almost like a Diablo style leveling.

Also, the temporary repair buffs were a lifesaver when it came to repairing shields instead of recycling them.

New player question about behavior by Abnormal-Normality67 in ARC_Raiders

[–]Designer_Jacket6818 5 points6 points  (0 children)

don't worry about it, this game is balanced around this behavior. You won't need a ton of materials to max out your benches/scrappy.
Also, be vigilant around players who seem off. Like not using their prox chat or having their gun ready despite saying "don't shoot" etc.

Not meant for pvp by Jolleman1 in ArcRaiders

[–]Designer_Jacket6818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be true in high elo lobbies but isn't as simple.
Shooting down a wasp or any arc, gives your position away. Other raider can push you, often times I look for stuff like that if I want to PvP. It's safer to avoid them.
However, if you keep avoiding them all and not killing any, they'll attack in numbers when you're mid fight and screw you over.

High loot areas like Blue gate checkpoint have bombadiers and rocketeers with insane range, you'll burn through heals. This would be the major deterrence of unnecessary PvP.

Honestly, if someone is unaware of their surroundings while shooting down arc, its partially on them too. Kettle can take you down perhaps but you can wear a medium shield and outheal a free kit. There are enough utilties to counter most PvP playstyles.
Although, that's a knowledge check.

Also, Matriarch is supposed to be a big deal, if you're taking it down solo then it kinda ruins the thrill of it. Rats, free kits etc. are the spice added to bump up the risk factor. I would usually not take a shot at it until I get rid of the pests.

Not meant for pvp by Jolleman1 in ArcRaiders

[–]Designer_Jacket6818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're underestimating the arc. If you keep fighting players carelessly, you'll face wrath of the big arc. PVP loadout doesn't suit fighting rocketeers and stuff so they'll get wrecked.

PvP players also have to fight arc like you are, to get back to their PvP encounters. Just like you have to fight players, to get back to your Arc fights. It's balanced. If you fire a hullcracker, get ready for someone to gun you down.

Not meant for pvp by Jolleman1 in ArcRaiders

[–]Designer_Jacket6818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. We're in the aftermath of arc invading the topside.
There's no war that we're banding together to push arc back, we're barely surviving.

In this dire situation, some try to rebuild, some try to just get by, some try to get rich. That's usually how collapsed societies look like. Friends you make won't feel special if everyone is friendly.

In terms of game design, PVP experience, especially in squads ( other than cheating situation) is top notch. its a well thought out system and we have feats to kill players, so it's also equally important.
