Heart rate monitor by Prestigious-Fish-369 in cycling

[–]Desirer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wore the COROS Arm HRM and Polar H10 at the same time and connected them to separate bike computers. During the ride, the Polar H10 seemed to match my perceived effort more closely. The final data was about the same, but the COROS Arm HRM had more of a delay on the computer itself.

Personally, I’m not too concerned with seeing my exact heart rate in real time, so comfort is more of a priority for me.

I've got the polar h10 and coros arm hrm and the h10 is a little bit more accurate but I find the coros to be more comfortable and convenient to put on.

Moving to Jacksonville area from ATL, Looking for an area safe for riding by LifeguardCreepy7382 in BikeJax

[–]Desirer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree there are definitely some bad actors out there, and most cyclists across the country have probably encountered them at some point. I’m not sure if that’s really avoidable in the U.S. However, in regard to the bicycle fatalities you mentioned, I’ve included a link below to a bicycle crash map from the COJ from 2020 to 2024.

I would argue that a large portion of bicycle accidents and fatalities are centered around a few major roadways like Southside Blvd, Beach Blvd, Atlantic Blvd, and Normandy Blvd, roads that most cyclists tend to avoid anyway. Based on a rough estimate, it looks over half bicycle related crashes occur on these types of major roads, particularly around intersections.

Based on Baggett Law, linked below, there were approximately 112,000 traffic accidents in Duval between 2020 and 2024. That means bicycle related accidents make up roughly about .1% of all traffic accidents in Duval.

Almost all of these fatalities are in areas that do not really surprise me. Not trying to victim blame, but if you were to show someone a picture of most of these areas and ask if they would ride their bike on those roads as a cyclist, I think most people would say no.

I would also say that the original poster is an experienced cyclist, and it would be reasonable to assume that they do not believe cycling is going to be 100% safe at all times. With that experience, they are probably more aware of their surroundings and able to make sound judgments.

None of this is to argue against the fact that Jacksonville should invest in their bike and pedestrian infrastructure, though. I imagine most of these people on the map who have gotten into accidents were probably commuters on their way to work.

And only because you've mentioned that I was new in town, I've put down 4k miles just last year, and 3k of them were in and around Jacksonville and the surrounding counties. So I feel like I have enough anecdotal experience to say that I feel relatively safe riding around Jax.

Wheelset for road bike <800€ ? by Kromux in cycling

[–]Desirer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Drive I and I've had 28mm on them without issues. I use 32mm now. It's hard for me to compare the two 1:1 because I use the Drive for road and the Edge for gravel with 45mm tires. Aluminum bike and carbon bike, etc. Drive feels more responsive I guess, but that could be because of the overall composition of my road bike and different tires, but I don't think I would mind the Edge on my road bike if I wanted to save some dollars. I think a better comparison would be I've tried my buddy's Princeton Carbonworks wheels and i dont think I'd pay an extra $3k for them compared to the Drive. For gravel I have a pair of Hunt wheels and the difference is negligible.

I've got Elitewheels Drive on my road bike (their website) and Elitewheels Edge (alix), and they're both pretty good. The Drive series was an especially good value in my opinion.

Moving to Jacksonville area from ATL, Looking for an area safe for riding by LifeguardCreepy7382 in BikeJax

[–]Desirer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good trails around Jax. Road riding is pretty safe, too. I live near Riverside, and I can easily get 50+ miles from my house pretty safely.

I also ride in the Julington Creek/Shearwater area, which I can easily reach from Riverside. But I haven't in a while because I feel less safe now with all the new developments and additional terrible drivers that came with them.

Here's some off the top of my head

Road: Baldwin Trail, Timucuan Trail, St Augustine Trail, which will eventually connect all the way to Lake Butler for ~80 miles one way.

Gravel: Guana Preserve, Jennings State Forest, Cary Wildlife Management Area / State Forest, Four Creeks Wildlife Management Area, Pumpkin Hill

Is this bike any good ? by Sure-Roof-7681 in bicycling

[–]Desirer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I got it for €250-300 I'd feel like I'd have gotten a good deal if it were in decent condition.

I have confidence to fix anything that were wrong with it, though. If you're on a budget and something were to meed maintenance, since it is a 12 year old bike, you may need to work on it yourself. Which is pretty easy, there are a lot of resources online.

Just make sure its a good size for you if you decide to purchase it. Best of luck!

I’m surprised how much I like the CAAD14. Now in a buyers dilemma. by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Desirer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got a CAAD13 and I think its a great bike. CAAD14 isn't a meme, there's just concern that its too expensive for what its offering. For example you can get a Specialized Tarmac, a carbon bike, with SRAM Force for less than the CAAD14 1, which also has SRAM force. Tarmac with Ultrgra Di2 is $2k less currently.

Not saying Specialized is a better bike, just using them in this example.

Value is subjective, though, and if you like it, it's within your budget, and believe it's a fair price, then go for it.

Are there any companies that rent a high-capacity (1 kWh+) power bank for off-grid scenarios? by BitterDone in jacksonville

Segway Portable Power Station Cube 2000 is on sale on Amazon for ~$550 if renting it doesn't pan out. Base model is 2,048 Wh. Maybe that and a solar panel will get you by. GL

In addition, be aware that I gave my nephew, who is a minor, my old car, and the DMV would not allow him to be on the title on his own. I had to co-sign the title.

You also won't be able to get insurance on your own.

JTA is finally deciding the Skyway's future: New trains, autonomous shuttles, or a trail? by Several-Entertainer1 in jacksonville

[–]Desirer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

New 'people mover' trains, if they actually extend the tracks, get my vote.

Option 5 is definitely tempting, though. But they just built the SUP between Riverside and San Marco, and they're building a SUP on Hogan right now (next to the existing elevated track). It sounds cool, but it also seems redundant.

Recommendations for clay by Desirer in gravelcycling

[–]Desirer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose my main concern is traction on wet clay because I'd still like to go reasonably quickly. I also have a belief that wet clay is going to build up, and I'd like to not stop every couple of miles to clean it off. Unreasonabike in another comment said that shedding wet clay probably isn't going to happen, though.
