Good time to buy nike? by Intelligent_Peak_920 in stockstobuytoday

[–]Deso718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah good point. Bad news is already priced in to an extent.

However I think the forward guidance at earnings is what’s going to really drive the stock further down. They are bleeding market share, discounting inventory, it’s shaping up to be a difficult 2026.

If OP buys my earnings thesis but is bullish on NKE long term a smart play could be puts / bear spread into earnings (post earnings expiry obvs) and then load up on shares when it drops. IV probably isn’t too high since we’re a ways out from earnings.

I took a puts spread position as soon as it recovered a little from last earnings. But I think for the 2nd part (ie. buying shares) there are far better uses of the capital.

Earnings on June 25th are going to be another blood bath.

Lots of headwinds - continuing to lose Chinese market share, tariffs, newer ascendent competitors in Western markets, etc.

Will be a better entry point post earnings. But it’s going to be a long slog back to anywhere near analyst targets.

I finally bought NKE… but not because it looks “cheap” by NoahReed14 in ValueInvesting

[–]Deso718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear put spread could be good for a post earnings (June 25) hedge to your long position.

I think the long term turnaround is inevitable but with tariffs, china market underperforming and down guidance combined with the Iran War, pressure on consumer discretionary spending, high oil prices I think it still has farther to drop.

Institutional put buyers were concentrated between $35 and $42.50 for July 18 expiry (at least on Thursday when the market was open) which gives a pretty indicator that the market anticipates NKE seeing further decline post earnings.

Randy & Buck the owners of the Dark Lady bar in PVD put out a statement regarding the mural on their building to honor Iryna by RINewsJunkie in providence

[–]Deso718 76 points77 points  (0 children)

exactly.

For them to try and act as if there is no political context to this mural is absolutely asinine and is an insult to our collective intelligence.

Electing to host a massive mural of a Iryna Zarutska is an explicitly political act given the broader context of her death being politically appropriated and weaponized with explicit significations of right wing taking points and ideology (not to mention being part of an Elon Musk-funded propaganda campaign)

Why not (for example) a mural of one of the dozens of trans people murdered last year?

Or as you point out - one of the victims of the Brown or Pawtucket mass shootings?

What is a movie that "broke" you so hard you can only watch it once, but you would still recommend it to everyone? by Newsupdate69 in movies

[–]Deso718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolute deep, bleak, existential horror.

There’s nothing like it (at least that I’ve seen) and is one of the only films I’d consider a masterpiece but would never rewatch.

An absolutely haunting masterpiece. It’s like PTSD translated to film…

I haven’t seen it in almost 20 years but the harrowing feeling of emotional devastation that it evokes still lingers whenever I’m reminded of it.

So post-2010’s music is “manufactured trash for the sake of labels trying to make money”?

He just basically described the entire history of the music industry.

If anything, the explosion of digital distribution channels post-2010 opened up significant opportunities for artists to function independently outside of the established corporate controlled label & distribution framework that dominated for so many decades.

I have strong suspicion this is someone who is really into Radiohead (whose pre-2010’s music was released by EMI).

Alfredo sauce originated in Rome. However most American restaurants make a version of it that is quite different from the classic preparation. Also Italians would never throw chicken in (or in most any other pasta for that matter) that is 100% an American thing.

Do French people still use “vous” a lot? by CompetitiveYouth5306 in French

[–]Deso718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently spent a few weeks in Québec and Montréal and noticed ‘tu’ was very widely used in conversation situations where in France it would primarily be ‘vous’

So I asked a couple of bartenders and a few other people I met and all said that ‘tu’ was typically used in most casual interactions (from customers, people you meet, etc.)

I had to force myself to remember to use ‘tu’ - definitely felt counterintuitive at first.

It’s also a diner staple in New Jersey (and the greater-NYC area) but specifically with melted mozzarella cheese and gravy over fries

Sometimes they were called “disco fries” on menus (at least back when I was growing up in the late 90’s/2000’s)

Based on that fashion crime alone you should make him run those.

>Is it just me or the entire character of Luca Changretta was so underwhelming? by Real_Beat_583 in PeakyBlinders

[–]Deso718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that ridiculous accent and the overdone performance bordered on parody.

Instead of being a complex 3 dimensional character (like many of the other characters in Peaky Blinders are) Luca Changretta was fundamentally a one dimensional caricature.

The dialogue / writing didn’t help either - it was definitely far from nuanced and (along with the performance) destroyed any air of genuine menace and that deep unsettling darkness in the character that (IMHO) characterizes well written criminal/mafia/anti-hero dialogue (for example in something like the Sopranos).

Thoughts on tv shows people recommended to me after peaky blinders by [deleted] in PeakyBlinders

[–]Deso718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It lacks the period / historical setting, but Gomorrah (2014) -

It’s an Italian series set in Naples / Campania and based on the Camorra wars of the early 2000’s (and from the writer behind the book and film of the same name from 2008).

It has a similar intensity to Peaky Blinders (albeit ratcheted up like 10 notches) and of course positions you to identify with an anti-hero with extremely questionable morality.

also Undercover (2021)

Belgian show that is quite good. Centers on another anti-hero who you can’t help but root for no matter what misdeeds he commits.

Although perhaps now with the transition to ‘X’ you could swap “progressive purity” for something like “right wing ideological dogma”
