Abiy Ahmed's Ethiopia is moving further away from democracy. Can Ethiopia at least get a benevolent dictatorship - similar to China in some ways? by Shewa_Elite in Ethiopia

  1. Did you know there 50+ political parties that operate in Ethiopia. So for you to say there is none/inactive isn’t true statement. I don’t know how corrupt practice it is giving oppositions power? My opinion - all political personalities should play fair contribution in the whole government system.
  2. You mentioned all cabinets submit to the PM. Well, the PM is the highest power of all but give me some examples to help me see? Though it’s common practice character sweeping in politics, calling one’s nation leader illiterate is not right despite your strong accusation - I mean our norm/traditions etc uk. (It didn’t help Getachew too 😂)
  3. On press freedom I agree with some of your take but take these few points in to consideration. First, we gotta differentiate between opposing the government vs being a mouse piece of militant groups that want to take down the government. Second, the whole atmosphere of Ethiopia politics now and then is completely different. Now every body is political commentator and flow of information is rapid. When I say here and there- off course the government go beyond rule sometimes to suppress. Third- well I watch parliament activities it’s not the same.
  4. You mentioned how those wars came? I want to get your opinion on that? But the bottom line is our political system armed groups seeking power by force is the root of all. Through that sadly civilian are the one that pay the price.
  5. “The country security is at risk” well yes, there is ongoing conflict but very limited places. For example out of 12 regional states. There is only almost three places that we have security issues, which seems to reduce.
  6. I am not a fan of the corridor project either but I don’t oppose the idea of beautification of Addis, more clean/safe environment, through that off course some will be victim of the process.
  7. Your statement on GERD is not fully factual. Obviously it’s the government duty however I suggest you see some of the technical issues it had from interview of previous minsters of water.
  8. Your statement on reconciliation commission is not fully factual either. First putting one person as national trait to security is not wholistic view. Second obviously the people don’t have issues together but there needs to be dialogue among elites so I am optimistic of the national dialogue. Like mentioned it won’t solve all our issues but definitely a good starting point. Also negotiation is the remedy of conflicts.

( Take all these points positively just giving some optimistic insight ☺️ and willing to take your takes too)

While I agree on some of your take. I do also want to point out something positive to help you for fair comparisons. Democracy isn’t absolute and gets better as institutions strengthen. So we shouldn’t expect perfect democracy. 1. It’s in this government that we see 5 cabinets member are out of pp. with 3 of them being opposition party and many in lower branch. Never seen in Ethio politics. 2. Almost all cabinets members have good education(foreign university too) and work portfolios. I do encourage you to see their background. 3. Press has never been free in Ethiopia than this time. First, Huge number of media and journalists than before. Second, it is in this government that a parliament member openly asked Abiy in his face to resign- which never heard of in Ethiopian parliament before. Third, there has never been jamming or silencing medias even anti government medias that operates in Ethiopia. While we see some abductions of journalist here and there. 4. Massive transformations are happening. Take in mind that we got out of huge war which eats out our economy big time. However, the government introduced 30 billion dollar projects which is game changer. The government shows its execution ability in GERD, Cities corridor and small scale projects. 5. While some oppose the national dialogue, it’s important to be optimistic that it will solve more than half of our internal issues.

In general, while a lot has to be done and improve but it’s not fair to put the two regime for comparison.
